> 1TB filesystems with ZFS and 32-bit Solaris?
...mode has a 1TB device limit. UFS filesystems in 32-bit mode also have a 1TB limit, even if using a logical volume manager to span smaller than 1TB devices. So, what kind of limit does ZFS have when running under 32-bit Solaris? -- Erik Trimble Java System Support Mailstop: usca14-102 Phone: x17195 Santa Clara, CA

Expand zpool capacity
Hello, Experts. I''ve got a problem. I''m trying to expand my main zpool (rpool), but don''t know how to do that. (i''m 100% newbie in non-windows world) I use Osol under Vmware on Windows. I had a pretty small vhdd -> only 12gb. Yesterday i decided to expand my virtual drive to 20gb. (After several tries to upgrade the OS to a newest dev-releases and

ZFS system requirements
Hi, this says that opensolaris only requires 512MB ram: http://dlc.sun.com/osol/docs/content/IPS/sysreq.html This says 1GB ram and a 64bit processor are recommended: http://www.solarisinternals.com/wiki/index.php/ZFS_Best_Practices_Guide#Memory_and_Swap_Space Am I going to have problems if I run opensolaris and zfs at the minimum requirements? -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

questions about replacing a raidz2 vdev disk with a larger one
I''d like to replace/upgrade two 500GB disks in RaidZ2 vdev with 1TB disks, but I have some preliminary questions/concerns before trying ''zfs replace dpool ?'' Will ZFS permit this replacement? Will ZFS use the extra space in a heterogeneous RaidZ2 vdev, or is the size limited by the smallest disk in the vdev? Thanks in advance, Vizzini The system is currently running

Comparison between the S-TEC Zeus and the Intel X25-E ??
...x.htm Can anyone enlighten me as to any possible difference between an STEC Zeus and an Intel X25-E ? sharing a ssd between rpool and l2arc
Hi, as Richard Elling wrote earlier: "For more background, low-cost SSDs intended for the boot market are perfect candidates. Take a X-25V @ 40GB and use 15-20 GB for root and the rest for an L2ARC. For small form factor machines or machines with max capacity of 8GB of RAM (a typical home system) this can make a pleasant improvement over a HDD-only implementation." For the upcoming

ZFS on a SAN
Hi All, I''m new on ZFS, so I hope this isn''t too basic a question. I have a host where I setup ZFS. The Oracle DBAs did their thing and I know have a number of ZFS datasets with their respective clones and snapshots on serverA. I want to export some of the clones to serverB. Do I need to zone serverB to see the same LUNs as serverA? Or does it have to have preexisting,

ZFS with STK raid card w battery
We have Sun STK RAID cards in our x4170 servers. These are battery backed with 256mb cache. What is the recommended ZFS configuration for these cards? Right now, I have created a one-to-one logical volume to disk mapping on the RAID card (one disk == one volume on RAID card). Then, I mirror them using ZFS. No hardware mirror. What I am a little confused with is if it is better to not do any

X45xx storage vs 7xxx Unified storage
We are looking at adding to our storage. We would like ~20TB-30 TB. we have ~ 200 nodes (1100 cores) to feed data to using nfs, and we are looking for high reliability, good performance (up to at least 350 MBytes /second over 10 GigE connection) and large capacity. For the X45xx (aka thumper) capacity and performanance seem to be there (we have 3 now) However, for system upgrades , maintenance

Huge difference in reporting disk usage via du and zfs list. Fragmentation?
Do we have enormous fragmentation here on our X4500 with Solaris 10, ZFS Version 10? What except zfs send/receive can be done to free the fragmented space? One ZFS was used for some month to store some large disk images (each 50GByte large) which are copied there with rsync. This ZFS then reports 6.39TByte usage with zfs list and only 2TByte usage with du. The other ZFS was used for similar

ZFS Dedup question
I created a zfs pool with dedup with the following settings: zpool create data c8t1d0 zfs create data/shared zfs set dedup=on data/shared The thing I was wondering about was it seems like ZFS only dedup at the file level and not the block. When I make multiple copies of a file to the store I see an increase in the deup ratio, but when I copy similar files the ratio stays at 1.00x. -- This

How to remove zpool name "alias"
I''m not sure about the right naming, but here is what I did and what my problem is now: I imported a "syspool" as another name (that''s why I use the naming "alias"), using the following command: zpool import -f syspool original My problem is that after reboot, the syspool is available both as "syspool" and "original" pool names at the same

ZFS mirror to RAIDz?
Hi all, I currently have four drives in my OpenSolaris box. The drives are split into two mirrors, one mirror containing my rpool (disks 1 & 2) and one containing other data (disks 2 & 3). I''m running out of space on my data mirror and am thinking of upgrading it to two 2TB disks. I then considered replacing disk 2 with a 2TB disk and making a RAIDz from the three new drives.

Using local disk for cache on an iSCSI zvol...
...cess to my cache device, but that''s OK. I''m just thinking in terms of performance. I guess what it boils down to is what is the access time/throughput of a single local 15k SCSI drive vs a GigE iSCSI volume? -- Erik Trimble Java System Support Mailstop: usca22-123 Phone: x17195 Santa Clara, CA

block align SSD for use as a l2arc cache
I have an Intel X25-M 80GB SSD. For optimum performance, I need to block align the SSD device, but I am not sure exactly how I should to it. If I run the format -> fdisk it allows me to partition based on a cylinder, but I don''t think that is sufficient enough. Can someone tell me how they block aligned an SSD device for use in l2arc. Thanks, Geoff

Open Solaris on Sparc Virtual Server Options
Hello Everyone, My question is simply what are my best options for successfully installing virtual tools on an Open Solaris OS running on Sparc Architecture. My hardware is a Sun Blade 2500. From what I have read Virtualbox and Xen do not work on Sparc technologies. What options do I have? Thank you in advance for any advice, Dan -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
