Run liveice as a background process...
Tried running it as non root user but something about the user not having access to the /dev/dsp audio device. I've got to give the user the ability to use that device? Thanks for the help. If that's what you want, then this ought to work: /usr/local/icecast/bin/liveice >/dev/null 2>/dev/null & As a rule, it's probably better to run it as a non-root user (though I'm not aware of any specif...

file or website upload scripts / programs and security protection
Holiday Greetings! Ummmmm scenario is centos 4.5 standard apache webserver I have a client that is really struggling with website file upload concepts. Ive been googling for some scripts or other programs that allow uploading of files to proper directory(ies) after authentication I am definitely concerned about security issues of course. I have never implemented this before because everyone I

Keeping Icecast and Liveice running...
I'm just wondering how people are keeping Icecast and Liveice running. If it crashes at some point do you just restart everything by hand or do you have something to keep an eye on the processes (e.g svscan/daemontools program)??? I will be running a stream for a radio station and if the stream crashes I would like it to know that it has crashed and either reboot the system or restart the

>Fromwhat you describe, your comp/limiter can't possibly be working correctly. It should be the last unit in line before the sound card, and needs to be adjusted properly. You also need to balance the levels on your mixing board (so that the correc t level comes at predictable place on the slider). It might be worthwhile to find someone with some sound-mixing or radio engineering experience

liveice Question
Works just fine - though it might not be documented (seems like this info was dropped from the sample liveice.cfg file in the later distributions). Basically, at the end of liveice.cfg add the line: ENCODER_STREAM_SET 1 then define the values that would be different on the 2nd stream, ie: NAME Scott's 24kb/s stream SERVER xxxx.yyy.com PORT 80xx PASSWORD (if different than 128k) BITRATE

Problem streaming to shoutcast w/ liveice
When you're streaming to a Shoutcast server w/ liveice (or any icecast source tools), the port in liveice.cfg needs to be set to one port higher than the Shoutcast server base port. Shoutcast uses the base port for metadata & port+1 for the stream data. If you exit liveice with ctrl-c (rather than the command it specifies) it usually won't screw up your session settings. Hope this

stupid headers
With Winamp, you need to set the port to one number below the server port. ie: if the server is on 8000, set Winamp to 7999. When used with a Shoutcast server, Winamp uses the base port for metadata, & port+1 for the audio stream & headers. You also need to have the Icecast server listen on both ports (or run a second 'dummy' server on port-1) so that Winamp will at least *think*

off topic: info on mp3 files
The perl MP3-Info module will give you anything you want from the id3 tag, including artist, title, etc. If you're not a perl programmer, you might want to look for a script called 'mpi' that makes a nice command-line frontend to the module. Hope this helps -bg --- Bill Goldsmith www.kpig.com www.radioparadise.com > > hi, > > this is way off topic, but maybe someone can

possible solution...?
How long has that system been up? Back when I was using Winamp/Win98 as a stream source it would do that after a day or two. Sometimes closing & restarting Winamp would help - more often I'd need to reboot. Win2000 would probably work better - of course ices on Linux would be best :-) -bg ----- Original Message ----- From: "Moritz Grimm" <gtgbr@gmx.net> To:

Client Woes
What is usually done is that you provide *both*. That's the only way to truly allow a choice. I certainly would never suggest using a .ram file only. But RealPlayer doesn't handle .m3u or .pls files properly (though it *will* claim that association & refuse to give it up) - so if you want to make your stream as accessable as possible, you need 2 links. -bg > Making it a .ram

multiple liveice sources
The easiest way to accomplish this is to create a 2nd directory containing liveice & its config file. You can't run 2 instances in the same directory - their temp files will overwrite each other. Contrary to what others have written, liveice works just fine once it's set up. That's not always easy, though... :-) -bg ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kristján Guðni

Keeping Icecast and Liveice running...
Liveice definitely needs a keepalive script of some kind. It's tricky, though - since it can lose connection to the server & stop streaming, but continue to run. The only truly reliable keepalive I've used polls the server to see if it says the stream is up & if not kills & restarts liveice. When killing liveice, it's best to kill the lame process(es) that it spawns as

Liveice & RedHat 7.1
Help!! I compiled liveice on a more-or-less stock RH 7.1 (2.4.2-2) server install. It starts, appears to connect (to a Shoutcast server), lame runs using an appropriate CPU %, lists OK on yp.shoutcast.com - but clients can't connect properly (ICY 200 OK then stalls) - & the liveice console "vu display" is blank. With VERBOSE 10 I get: l3_side->main_data_begin: 1064 Resvoir

how many streams can icecast handle ?
The simple answer is: way more than your Internet connection will support :-) The server consumes very little in the way of resources. Your outgoing bandwidth will almost certainly be the limiting factor. Just divide your available bandwidth by the bitrate of your stream (& lop off about 5% of that number for overhead & a safety margin) . Example: a T1 line = 1.54 mbps = 1540 kbps /

icecast+liveice in normal user fail
Liveice writes temp files to a hidden directory called .liveice_temp_files that's created the first time liveice is run. If it's run by root the first time, other users won't have write priveleges to it. As root chown that dir to the user or group you want to run it under. -bg --- Bill Goldsmith www.radioparadise.com www.kpig.com > I would like to use icecast and liveice as my
