Where's the tool to do .ogg bitrate "peeling"?
Hello. The page http://www.vorbis.com/faq.psp (last faq) and http://cs.leander.isd.tenet.edu/~mitchell/vorbis_intro.html both state that it's possible to lower the bitrate of an existant ogg enc file without reencoding. Where does this feature exists? oggenc only likes wav files as input, how can I feed it an .ogg file and get a lower bitrate in a new one? -- Grzegorz Adam Hankiewicz gradha@terra.es...

mp3 quality vs Vorbis 1.0?
Many of you have read and my "introduction to compressed audio with Vorbis" and given me excellent feedback. But with 1.0 about to hit the streets, I figured I'd freshen it up a bit. [ http://grahammitchell.net/writings/vorbis_intro.html ] In particular, it contains two paragraphs discussing the relative quality of Vorbis vs mp3 at a certain target bitrate. These figures seem to be roughly accurate, but they were for the rc3 encoder. Can you guys who've been playing with what we called "CVS RC4" weigh in wi...

compressed audio tutorial - "major" update
I've made a large update to the introduction to compressed audio. I completely rewrote the first section, which I wasn't happy with. It now features two diagrams (worth 1000 words each!), and is broken up into a couple of sections. http://cs.leander.isd.tenet.edu/~mitchell/vorbis_intro.html I have also continued to tweak other sections based on feedback from email and this forum. All the feedback has been very helpful. If you could all read at least the first two sections (the new ones). Anyone wanting nitty gritty on the other changes can see the version history at the bo...

Launch of OggHelp.com
Hello everyone, I would like to bring to your attention the new website that I have been working on. It is a portal for articles, links, and support for everything related to Ogg Vorbis. It just started and hopefully will be evolving rapidly. http://www.ogghelp.com I have modeled it after the group of successful Help pages such as http://VCDHelp.com and DVDHelp.com. I've been

New Member seeks advice.
Sorry about that! I realized I had made the mistake of just changing the subject title minutes after I had posted. If I broke a second rule I am not sure what it was but if two out of three is all I managed to break, with almost no effort on my part I am sure I could bat 1000! I will check the Speex cite you recommended. I will likely have some questions. Thanks, Michael

Re: An introduction to compressed audio with Vorbis
On <http://cs.leander.isd.tenet.edu/~mitchell/vorbis_intro.html>: "Each snapshot has a 16-bit number for the "loudness" of the sound, meaning that the scale is fairly fine-grained - it ranges from -32,768 (complete silence during that snapshot) to 32,767 (the loudest volume measurable)." That's not correct. A single sample is...

VBR vs ABR
Hello, I purchased the "CD Ripper 2" plugin for Winamp 3 and need help choosing an ogg encoding format. It seems I have the choice between VBR and ABR formatted oggs. I am familiar with VBR (variable bit rate) but not sure what ABR stands for? Is it possible/desirable to specify a bit rate when encoding oggs, or does the nature of the ogg format make use of varying bit rates?

Firefox plugin to auto convert audio files into Ogg
per > http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=63653 The above thread on the Fedora Forums about a script that can automatically convert one audio format to another got me thinking > wouldn't it be fantastic to be able to right click on an MP3 (or other audio file) while in Firefox, and automatically have the file converted into Ogg at the same time as the file is being saved

Hz vs bitrate?
the Vorbis FAQ says: "mid to high quality (8kHz-48.0kHz, 16+ bit, polyphonic) audio and music at fixed and variable bitrates from 16 to 128 kbps/channel." What is the difference between Hz and bitrate? Doesn't MP3 support higher bitrates? Pointers for more reading are welcome.

Using oggenc
Hello all, I wanted to ask some experienced users some settings about oggenc. 1. How can I setup oggenc so that I can DIRECTLY rip tracks off my audio cd? As we all know, audio cd doens't really have a file format that we can directly use. Do I HAVE to convert them to wav files then convert them to ogg files? 2. The options: -b -m -M with the bitrate of the audio file. If I set something
