a question on the use of 'solve'
Dear R users, I am in trouble using the function solve(matrix) in a loop. When it happens that I have a singular matrix, I get an error message saying so and the loop stops. My question is if there in any way to keep on going in the loop. Thank you in advance, Laura *---------------------------------------------------------* Laura Antolini, PhD Department of

Hierarchical clustering with centroid method
Dear everybody! In the function hclust, at each stage distances between clusters are recomputed by the Lance-Williams dissimilarity update formula according to the particular clustering method being used. Using "centroid" method, Lance-Williams recurrence formula works properly only for euclidean distance. How is it possible to use properly centroid method with manhattan distance ?

Use of xvfb : X11 cannot allocate additional graphics colors. Consider using colortype="pseudo.cube" or "gray"
Hi, I use R in remote access on a Debian server. I need X11() to create graphical things so I use xvfb-run (Virtual X server environnement) R to allowing X11() capabilities to R. An other technique is to connect in shh -X to execute my R script. With the connection ssh -X, my R script is well executed. BUT when I use Xvfb, some graphics are created but an error occured and stop the script.

Compute quantiles with values and correspondent frequencies
Dear List, quantile(x) function allows to obtain specified quantiles of a vector of observations x. Is there an analogous function to compute quantiles in the case one have the vector of the observations x and the correspondent vector f of relative frequencies ? resistanceDistance representation
Dear all, i'm using gdistance to model animal movement across landscape. I have imported 11 rasters with roads, freeways, slope, use-of-land, lakes (...) after recoding them with GRASS with a HSI value ranging from 1 to 4. I've assigned zero to the NAs and then transformed all the rasters in TransitionLayers (function=mean,directions=4) and later summed all of them into a new transition:

frailty and time-dependent covariate
Hello, I'm trying to estimate a cox model with a frailty variable and time-dependent covariate (below there is the statement I use and the error message). It's seems to be impossible, because every time I add the time-dependent covariate the model doesn't converge. Instead, if I estimate the same model without the time-dependent covariate it's converge. I'd like knowing if
