registering samba in wins
for some strange reason, our wins servers occasionally drop samba
servers out of there name space. to deal with this, I cron'ed a
restart of samba at midnight everynight. This was a quick solution,
but a lousy one.
I would rather have some way to have samba regularly send name
registration requests to wins. Is there a way to do this?
barring that, is there some interface I can query on samba

multiple groups by the same name
When issuing a net rpc group list I see two entries for the same group
name:
sudo net rpc group list
Password:
Domain Faculty
Domain Guests
Domain Admins
Domain Admins
Domain Users
So I have 3 questions.
1) could this be the cause of my failure to be able to join machines
to the samba domain?
2) how do I remove one of these groups
3) how to I check membership in the 'Domain Admins'

issue with adding machines to new domain
I have created a domain controller using samba 3.0.20.
I following howto's from a couple of books and the samba.org site.
I was able to use net rpc vampire to migrate the old nt4 domain user
accounts, machine accounts, and trusts.
However, now when I attempt to use add a new machine to the domain I
receive and error. From windows I get:

Theora patent question
Does the reason Theora is relatively safe from patent infringement
lawsuit have more to do with it actually not being encumbered, or is
it because its use is decentralized?
For example, FreeType is not patent-free, nor is Linux, yet they
succeed because on the one hand, they are open source, and those who
maintain them do not guarantee anything regarding patents, it is up to
each individual user

SELinux on CentOS4
I regret the delay in replying to this topic but I am a digest
subscriber so I only see list traffic once every 24 hours.
When I moved from RHES3 to CentOS4 back in April/May of this year I
was bitten by the SELinux gnat as well, and the temptation to swat
a distracting irritation by killing it in its bed nearly proved
irresistible. However, taking to heart the advice given to me here

ZFS and powerpath
How much fun can you have with a simple thing like powerpath?
Here''s the story: I have a (remote) system with access to a couple
of EMC LUNs. Originally, I set it up with mpxio and created a simple
zpool containing the two LUNs.
It''s now been reconfigured to use powerpath instead of mpxio.
My problem is that I can''t import the pool. I get:

OT: Replacing Venerable NAS
I have an original-label Infrant (now NetGear) ReadyNAS storage
appliance that's been running for 8+ years. Except for replacing its
power supply, it has not skipped a beat in all this time.
I use it primarily as a backup device (via NFS) for a couple of Linux
machines, (via SMB) for a couple of Windows PC's, and (via ftp) for web
sites at my hosting provider.

using -e syntax and remote rsnyc server
I have setup rsync to run as a deamon exporting one module named home.
when I attempt to use the rsync syntax specified on
http://samba.anu.edu.au/ftp/rsync/rsync.html
as follows:
rsync -av -e "ssh -l ssh-user" rsync-user@host::module /dest
I get a message from ssh, "bad escape character 'ssh -l username'".
This is an ssh error message, but I am not putting any

I attempted to write a script that would connect to the remote rsync
server and run rsync and then close the connection.
I am finding that sometimes the backgrounded ssh session works -- and
sometimes note. I following the syntax at:

though there is NO middle system.

non-windows management solutions
I would like a non-windows management solution for all the stupid
windows machines we have. I will gladly exclude any of the win9x
machines from this -- so I will be working with win2k and winXP
machines. I would like to have the capabilities that AD offers -- but
I would rather not use AD. These include things like group policy
objects, trusted user accounts data base, etc. All the things a

remote windows management
I keep hoping for better wasy to remotely manage windows machines
through samba.
In the very old samba-tng there was an rpcclient that could connect to
a remote machine and do various things like read/write the registry,
grab event logs, etc. I could never get it to work very well and
waited for a better one.
The trouble is the rpcclient program in samba-current doesn't have
these features.

active directory pains
After googling a bit, it seems that only way samba playes with active
directory is with samba 3.x
I'f been use samba 2.x with 'pass through' authentication and would
like to get rid of the pass through auth cause it seems to cause
problems. Yet, I don't know if I can trust samba 3 --
Has anyone been able to get a samba 2.x server to join a an Active
Directory domain?

long print times
we have two machines/users that experience extremely long wait times
when printing documents to samba servers. Both machines are Windows
XP. We have also noted that both were running personal firewalls, one
was micrisofts, the other was kerio. We also noted that when turning
these firewalls OFF, the wait times vanished and the systems behaved
normally.
Has anyone else seen this behavior? Any

problems with samba 3.x
I upgraded from Samba 2.x to Samba 3.x on my FreeBSD box. I used the
ports collection to do it. Currently, samba is at
samba-3.0.10,1
I did a rapid test of after make install from a windows XP box. It
worked fine. I also test from another samba client on linux. Again,
all was fine
However, when I attempt to access this server from ANY windows 2000
box I get the message:

AD function without AD
I'm very interesting in attempting to get the control over my windows
machines that AD offers, without actually have AD.
I know samba 3 can be a AD member server.. Are there any other
projects that integrate samba, ldap, kerberos to make a active
directory like system?
Note that I said AD like. My goals include
1) single sign on through kerb
2) access control through ldap groups

change password failure
on a windows client, I want to be able to press c-a-d and use the
change password dialog to change my samba password. However, when I
do this, I get an error that I'm not permitted to change a password.
the server is a stand alone server with security = user set.
what do I need to do to get this change password feature working?
