Creating a large matrix
Dear all, I have a set of data that is 2 columns wide and 35,000 rows long (see extract below). The first column contains codes for tetrads (2km x 2km squares within NW England) and the second column has the names of moss species present within each tetrad. I wish to convert this into a matrix where rows are labelled by 'Tetrad', columns are labelled by 'Moss species' and each cell contains a 1 or 0 to denote the pres...

stepAIC/lme (1.6.2)
Based on the stepAIC help, I have assumed that it only was for lm, aov, and glm models. I gather from the following correspondence that it also works with lme models. new package `multcomp'
...ontrast tests, which include all common multiple comparison procedures, such as the many-to-one comparisons of Dunnett, the all-pairwise comparisons of Tukey and many other procedures. We provide a list of 9 standard procedures (Dunnett, Tukey, Sequen, AVE, Changepoint, Williams, Marcus, McDermott, Tetrade), where the user selects the comparisons of his interest. In addition, a free input interface for the contrast matrix allows for more special comparisons. The comparisons itself are not restricted to balanced or simple designs. Instead, the programs are designed to suit multiple comparisons wit...

generating contrast names
Dear R-devel list members, I'd like to suggest a more flexible procedure for generating contrast names. I apologise for a relatively long message -- I want my proposal to be clear. I've never liked the current approach. For example, the names generated by contr.treatment paste factor to level names with no separation between the two; contr.sum simply numbers contrasts (I recall an
