...deprives you of most of the benefits of using a distribution (consistency, updates, etc..) ; - locally compiled packages is some work, that should not be duplicated if it can be avoided ; - following Debian unstable is a career in itself (been there, done that : not a decent pastime for a dental surgeon turned biostatistician turned dental surgeon...). So the right solution is probably to have this work done *once*, checked seriously, then to have the resultant packages put in some public repository (feisty-backports and lenny-proposed come to mind, but CRAN is probably also a good place). internal-sftp only without ssh and scp hanging
I've configured OpenSSH_5.3p1 to only allow sftp connections (openssh chroot functionality). i.e. Subsystem sftp internal-sftp Match group sftpusers ChrootDirectory /chroot/%u X11Forwarding no AllowTcpForwarding no ForceCommand internal-sftp So far everything works correctly with sftp but when a user ssh's or scp's to the box the login

OT: Suggestions for database for physicians patient records?
...e very flexible. If there are "front ends" that will make it easier for his secretaries to input patient records to the database and access it, that will be a "plus". It would also be a plus, but, it's not mandatory, if they can do this in Spanish. It's a small office (2 surgeons, nurses and secretaries) so I suspect there might be 4 to 6 workstations connected to the database server, maximum. I would like to help him get the best possible solution. Something with a large user base, excellent documentation and an active ML, like CentOS, is the goal. Thanks much! Lanny

After pulling out most of my hair, someone told me of this mailing list. He suggested you may be able to help. Rather than describing my problem again (it goes on for a while, sorry). Could one of you brain surgeons look at the following link and try and shed some light. R-Google interface: Google summer of code
...ne has to manually download the spreadsheet as a csv file and then read that into R. Since data changes frequently and is almost never final it would be far preferable for R to read a google spreadsheet directly. RODBC package does something similar for Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel. I am a surgeon-scientist whose programing experience is extremely limited. Is there a willing mentor who would want to take such a project and propose it for the Google summer of code project? The mentor could chose his or her scope. For instance at it's most basic the project's goal could be to simply r...

You are doing a fantastic job. However, I find your answer here a little odd. It's a bit like the surgeon saying, "I wouldn't have this operation, but if you want it just lie back." > The best way to do any major update is to backup your data, install the > OS, bring back your data and make all the newer services (if you are > moving things like databases or web directories, etc...

Liebert UPS, serial cable questions
Hi, I have a Liebert GXT2-1000RT230 UPS that is connected to my server using a serial cable. I have no idea to what port exactly it is connected so my first question is: how do I find out what /dev/tty** should I use? Do I need to install a device driver for it? Where do I find it? What should I use and how do I do so the server shuts down if the battery level is low? Yes, I'm a newby,
