SSL and url_for
Hey, all! I''m having a url problem that seems like I''m going to overcomplicate it if I don''t just ask what I''m doing wrong... My situation is that I''m testing to see if a visitor is accessing a controller via SSL, and if not, redirect to the same controller via my secure address. This really only amounts to replacing http with https, and so I did the

Production RAILS_ENV / DB Selection
Hey all, I''m having some issues moving a project that incorporates Backgroundrb onto a staging server... For some reason (surely of my own doing), my RailsBase workers are insisting on using trying to access my development DB instead of my "production" DB. When I try to load a model object from within a worker, I get the following: 20061120-21:54:28 (26296)

RoR on a VPS
I''m looking for a virtual private server to run a RoR site accessing a database on a different machine. This is a small application - basically a form to add records, and a few summary screens. What are the minimal requirements for a vps? Thanks. -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

Zombies?
Hey all, Quick question about handling completed workers... Most of my workers are one-offs that just let me spin off a long-running file transfer process and then they just need to self-destruct when completed. Thus, at the end of my do_work, I just call self.delete to (in theory) self-destruct. However, while checking the jobs.size from the console, I''ve noticed that this

which webserver to use in production?
Apologies in advance if this ignites a war of comflicting opinions.... I''m a few days away from going live with my first RoR application. It is completely database centric and each user will have his own queries so cacheing will not really help. I have a dedicated linux server being built by my hosting provider and I need to tell them which webserver to use. The databse is MySQL

Can someone please explain Lighttpd + Mongrel + Rails.
I know that Mongrel is a web server that hosts rails applications. But i don''t understand what part Lighttpd (or Apache) has in the setup. I know that you can use Mongrel on its own. What does Lighttpd improve on? Thanks, Chris -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

Symlinks in Capistrano?
I have a few projects with large directories (say, user-uploaded files) that make using Capistrano a bit awkward. However, I suspect that I may have reached the "write a custom task" level. (I suppose I''m just thinking out loud, here...) It seems as though I''d want this directories symlinked in /shared... Maybe there''s a way to extend the

Prevent users from entering urls
How could I make it so that links on my page could link to a controllers action, but if the user manually entered the url, it would redirect them back to the main page? Is this possible? Thank you, -Ben Lisbakken -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

Macbook for Rails Development
Hi All, I''ve finally got fed up of struggling with Windows and am on the verge of splashing out on a Macbook for Ruby/Rails development. I''ve seen DHH''s post about it on loudthinking but I wondered if anyone else has any more wisdom... Is it worth it over a powerbook? Any tips on good OSX apps for Rails dev (textmate, i know already)? Anything not working well on

Does shared hosting work? Anywhere?
I moved a rails application to textdrive using their low-cost shared plan. Once on textdrive my app would display ''proxy errors'' periodically. Hitting reload seemed to be all that was needed to get past the proxy error. After discussions with their support people I decided the proxy errors were being caused by apache server restarts -- because there were many of us sharing one

Uploading Large (100mb+) files
I have an Apache 2.2.3 (mod_proxy_balancer) frontend server that does not have mongrel installed. It does proxy requests to several other mongrel-only servers (each running 2 mongrel processes). Each mongrel node has the same rails code-base and it''s working perfectly. However, my question is when I add an upload file form... where is it going to physically put that file? I mean since

Mongrel 3.15, Ubuntu and Park place (S3)
Hello. I installed under Ubuntu (Dapper) Park Place. I followed the instructions given at the RedHanded site. Cluster Design
Hello everyone! My apologies if this appears twice... I had trouble getting it through earlier. A collegue and I are beginning development on a site that will eventually need to very scalable (assuming our business model is a good idea). My problem is that I''m not a sysadmin guru, and I''m not terribly comfortable with the design of the hosting platform. We''re going to

mongrel_upload_progress question/possible suggestion
Hey all, First off, thanks to Rick Olson and whoever else was involved with this plugin... It''s been amazingly easy to implement. I''ve got a question about the path_info parameter, though... It seems that unless the request PATH_INFO exactly matches the path_info passed in to the plugin at inclusion, it won''t actually trigger Add and add the upload to the list of
