Xen and Linux on Intel G33 needs kernel 2.6.19+
Dear, I''m looking to get Xen running on a system that (afterwards) seems a bit too new. The board has the Intel G33 chipset with the Intel ICH9 southbridge. This chipset is NOT supported by kernel 2.6.18 which ships with Xen 3.1.2 (and Debian Etch). So the question is: * What version of Xen to install to get going? Should I choose unstable? * What distribution will be the easiest to get started? (I got a custom Debian Etch with 2.6.23 kernel working)...

Motherboards
Does anyone have any experience with Super-Micro brand motherboards // dual Xeon cpu's? Had to swap out my Tyan piece of junk and going back with the S-M board. I believe it has similar north/southbridge chips on it -- at least they are the intel MCH ICH5R and PXH plus the 82546GB. One area that the Tyan board was seriously lacking in was in the hardware monitoring department. The S-M board uses a winbond 83627HF chip. Another area I'm wondering about is with the SATA controller. Suppo...

ATA driver not as good in 4.8 as 4.5?
I have a Lite-On 24102B burner on an Epox 7KXA (VIA 686A southbridge) together with a few SCSI disks. I recently upgraded from FreeBSD 4.5 to 4.7 then almost immediately to 4.8. I've had trouble with the burner since. With FreeBSD 4.5, I used "sysctl hw.atamodes=---,---,dma,---" to set the burner to DMA. Everything then worked fine. As far as I k...

Re: XSA-36 / howto fix broken IVRS ACPI table
...the SB (00:14.0). As currently configured by the BIOS, the NB IOAPIC is _entirely_ disabled, with only the SB IOAPIC enabled and configured. From 48693.pdf, it would seem that the NB is improperly configured, as 6.4.1 recommends that "The IOAPIC should be enabled by the system BIOS and the southbridge routing feature should be switched on. This will allow the interrupts to be forwarded to the PIC in the southbridge. This way, if the system boots in DOS, interrupts will still work. Once the system boots an ACPI OS (where IOAPIC is assumed to be supported), the system BIOS will disable the southbr...

AMD IOMMU disabled - No Perdev Intremap
Hi! From other people posting to this list, I know that there has been a bug related to the issue described in Xen Security Advisory 36 that disables iommu for some AMD users like me. However, even when passing "iommu=no-amd-iommu-perdev-intremap" it still disables i/o virtualisatoin. Related Xen dmesg output: (XEN) IVHD Error: Invalid IO-APIC 0 (XEN) AMD-Vi: Error initialization

3.1 on ASUS SK8V SATA problem
...dn't find a valid partition table, and the geometry is way off. My SATA disk is a WD740GD, a 74GB drive. Fdisk thinks it is 30MB, 255 heads, 63 sector/track, 3 cylinders. Have I done something wrong, or is the VIA SATA support in this kernel just not gonna hack it? The SK8V uses the VIA VT8237 southbridge chipset if anyone knows about this. Thanks for any help. -- C. XSA-36 / howto fix broken IVRS ACPI table
Hello, since applying the patches related to XSA-36 Xen recognizes a broken IVRS ACPI table and disables I/O virtualisation. I contacted the manufacturer of the mainboard/BIOS and they want to help me by providing a patched BIOS - so far so good. However, they need details about what to fix, which I don''t know either. Could you pls. give me some hints which I can forward to the

What do you think about this motherboard?
Hello all..... I would like to know if anyone here has had good experience with this Supermicro motherboard.....http://supermicro.com/products/motherboard/P4/E7221/P8SCT.cfm I am thinking about using it in an entry level mail and file server with a 3ware card and 200 GB SATA drives. Cost is a factor here otherwise I would go for an Opteron board instead. JC

For example in guestfish I allocate large disk image for example: $ guestfish ><fs> allocate test.img 20G When an image allocating, there is a big slowdown of guest OSes, launched on host machine, and on different drives. TSC and Power Management Events on AMD Processors
...rocessor and multi-processor platforms; it is supported for 7th-generation processors only on uni-processor platforms. STPCLK-throttling reduces the power consumption of the entire platform by dividing down the clock rate of all processor cores in all processors on the platform. The southbridge initiates a STPCLK-throttling message to all processors based on external temperature sensors, timers, or other external events that have been designed into the platform. Platform vendors typically use STPCLK-throttling as a safeguard to quickly cool a platform due to abnormal therma...

Still more questions WRT selecting a mobo for small ZFS RAID
...available via Newegg - MCP55 copy/fs lockup problem still unresolved Although the Nvidia 750a chipset seems to be supported by the sata_nv driver, I have read several open bug reports which indicate it may not be a good choice. Likewise, I have read several negatives on the entire line of AMD southbridges under Solaris. As it stands, the only compelling reason to go with an AMD CPU seems to be support for ECC in inexpensive motherboards. On the Intel side of things, there seem to be plenty of good reports of the ICH 7/8/9 chipsets that support AHCI and no negatives. The only negative on the Intel...
