ZFS+ config for 8 drives, mostly reads
Hi,
I posted in the Solaris install forum as well about the fileserver I''m building for media files but wanted to ask more specific questions about zfs here. The setup is 8x500GB SATAII drives to start and down the road another 4x750 SATAII drives, the machine will mostly be doing reads and streaming data over GigaE.
-I''m under the impression that ZFS+(ZFS2) is similar to RAID6, so for the initial 8x500GB two drives would be sucked into parity so I''d have a 3TB...

3Ware 9500 vs 9550 vs CentOS 4.latest kernel
Is anyone having issues with these particular cards (especially the
newer SATAII variant) and the stock CentOS kernels? Are they well
supported enough such that a "yum update" suffices to keep them synced
up with patches without having to hand edit the kernel or build special
modules from 3Ware each time?
Cheers,

Does anyone know how to check for a problem?

These cards are interesting to me because they are PCI-X and support 4
SATAII drives per multilane/infiniband connector for a total of 16
drives. Multilane is interesting to me because the editor can use a SFF
system (tiny desktop footprint) with 1M multilane cables talking to the
pile of disks in an external enclosure stashed out of the way with its
own redundant power...

that the disk supports TLER - time limited error recovery:

I''ve this configuration (I''m not interested in raw top performances but
in reliability.. so, I can accept slow MB/sec and prefer to rely on a

I''m having trouble with an adaptec 1205sa (non-raid) SATA PCI card.
It was all working fine when I plugged 2 used sata 200gb disks of a

disk I/O problems and Solutions
...RAID10 with the same amount of storage.
Will that perform much better?
In general we are planning to move away from RAID5 toward RAID10.
We also have on order an external IBM array (don't have the exact name
on hand but model number was 3000) with 12 drive bays. We ordered it
with just 4 x SATAII drives, and were going to put it on a different
system as a RAID10. These are just 7200 RPM drives - the goal was
cheaper storage because the SAS drives are about twice as much per
drive, and it is only a 300G drive versus the 1T SATA2 drives. IIRC
the SATA2 drives are about $200 each and the SA...

Samba + BDE and slow speed on reading (long)
...he application runs perfectly again.
Conclusion: there's definitely a problem when readind files from samba server. It's not network related, since FTP is really fast, and when serving the database from XP, the speed is OK too. The server is a brand new Core 2 Duo E4500, 2GB RAM, 160 GB HD SATAII. The switch is also new. The distro in question is FC5.
As a related topic, I've came across a situation (two times and couting) when writing files to the samba server is painfully slow. On both cases, setting SO_RCVBUF=1 has resolved the problem. I don't know why, but it did. Both times,...

Cheap ZFS homeserver.

2. At least 6 SATAII ports (and at least 6 drive slots)
3. Reasonable price (probably going to build it myself.)
I''m not worried about hotswapping. I want to make sure the box is going to be upgradeable with decent priced parts for a while (so PCI is out). My current fileserver is...

Asus L1N64 - a good candidate for a ZFS based home server?
This Asus board looks promising, assuming the parts (nForce 680a
chipset) are Solaris friendly:
http://www.asus.com.tw/products4.aspx?l1=3&l2=136&l3=486&model=1530&modelmenu=2
The board boasts 12 (!) SATA2 ports.
The FX-7x series CPUs appear to be a very cost effective ($799) 4 core
solution.

The server is a Dell PowerEdge 860, with a Dual Core 2.4Ghz Xeon CPU,

Installing something in a CentOS domU was very quick, so I also presume
it''s something Windows specific, but this is my first Windows domU
attempt, so I don''t know what to look for.
What do I do?

10MiB/s is normal tap:aio:file.raw ?
Hi there
I am analyzing disk performance. I'm testing raw (tap: aio) and lvm (phy :).
The tests I'm doing on a SLES11SP3, cpu I7, 4GBRam, disco-SATAII 7200rpm.
With phy: lvm achievement 70-80MiB / s (an acceptable value)
With tap: aio: file.raw achievement 5-9MiB / s, which is very low ...
10MiB / s is what you should expect access to a tap: aio: file.raw? or I
have something misconfigured?

zfs hanging during reads
Hi, I hope there''s someone here who can possibly provide some assistance.
I''ve had this read problem now for the past 2 months and just can''t get to the bottom of it. I have a home snv_111b server, with a zfs raid pool (4 x Samsung 750GB SATA drives). The motherboard is a ASUS M2N68-CM (4 SATA ports) with an Athlon LE1620 single core CPU and 4GB of RAM. I am using it

e-sata
Hi,
Does anybody has any experience with e-sata on CentOS5.2?
- How fast is it? Same as an internal sata?
- Does it support sata-2?
- Does it "hot-plug" like a USB?
