Rails Test Notifications w/ Growl Plugin
...Its a great way to keep up with your test suite, especially when coupled with autotest. And if you''re anything like me, you probably already have Growl rocking. Anyway, see my blog for details on installing the plugin: http://thatswhatimtalkingabout.org/news/2006/6/8/make-your-tests-roar Cheers, Blake -- Blake Watters Near-Time, Inc. http://www.near-time.net/

'Account disabled due to email bouncing' madness
We have a mail filter ( CanIt, by Roaring Penguin, see http://www.roaringpenguin.com ) that is doing a very good job indeed of blocking spam and viruses. And I certainly get a lot from this list ... so much that without the use of CanIt, I would have already had to retire my email address, and possibly even our entire domain, to avo...

"best practices" for Rails serving RESTful JSON services for use by AngularJS, Ember.js, etc.
...te code to provide services for use in these frameworks that in turn would require various changes to fit the normal Rails way to specify things. The gem is here: https://github.com/garysweaver/restful_json It needs a heck of a lot of work still, no working tests at the moment, and integrating roar-rails in its 3.0.0 branch. Our aim/current strategy for web development is to: 1. Keep # of controllers (and amount of code required for each) to a minimum, but they shouldn''t be overly monolithic to the point that they become difficult to maintain. 2. (Only) use REST where it makes se...

How to Include Associations in #as_json
Hi, Does anyone know how to include nested associations when overriding a model''s #as_json method? Below is my attempt to include direct and nested associations. NOTE: "office" is a direct association, "company" is nested association via "office". I''d like both included in the generated json output. def as_json(options={}) super(:include

old hardware / minimal netinstall -> CPU fan control
I have just installed CentOS 6 i386 onto an old rack server (it's gonna be a Bacula storeage server and is a 1U 1/2 depth chassis) I did a minimum netinstall and so far so good. However, I have one problem. The CPU fan is going at full speed constantly. Not a real problem apart from (a) it will affect the fan's lifespan and (b) it's noisy. I've done some Googling and found

network prob on Centos 4.4/HP DL320 G2
...enabled in the BIOS. I always used the tg3 driver that came with Linux, not the driver that HP offers. The only RPM I've installed that I got from HP is the one that installs "hpasm", because that's the one that turns the fans from "screaming jet engine" into "low roar". (this system contains a dozen or so small fans, all of which rotate at a gazillion rpm, all not quite the same speed, so you get a dozen slightly different pitches, causing heterodyning and the resultant throbbing along with the screaming if you don't use the hpasm module.) Suggestion...

nmbd memory leak in 2.2.x CVS
I am running 2.2.6 on a customer's site and everything has been perfect. However I noticed the other day that one of the two nmbd processes (it is a wins server) had grown to 13Mb over a two week period. I needed to update to the latest CVS version anyway and had hoped that something in that might fix things. Five days later and things are looking the same: nmbd started on Nov 9th: root

I have boosted my productivity !
Just a positive experience I would like to share with you : testing is great on paper but very tedious to apply because nobody wants to run manually the tests by hand. Last week I have discovered zentest, an automated test process command line utility. That was at the beginning (hopefully) of a new project. Believe it or not, I have started to code most parts of the application without using

I used to have a HP 320 generation 2 server that I used as a desktop. it had a bunch of tiny fans that screamed like a banshee. it turns out that one of the RPMs they shipped with it (on CD, not actually installed) contained a driver that toned down the fans to a soft roar. I'm sorry to say I have no memory of what the driver was. but if this system is from a vendor that supports Linux, they might have some suitable driver. good luck! -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- .---- Fred Smith / (...
