Recalcitrant CSS background-image
My app has a stylesheet that includes this definition: div.loadimage { width:580px; height:310px; background-image: url("/images/load.gif") no-repeat center 0% 0%; } The purpose is to use with some nice javascript by Patrick H. Lauke for fading in images. The div is supposed to include a "loading image" image which is overwritten by the final image when it has finished

Incomplete Trio in TDT analysis
I am involved in a study where, as in most of life, men demonstrate themselves to be recalcitrant. So while we have many probands and most of their mothers we only have about 50% of the trios being complete. I have been running tdt and trio.types. It appears as if it is ignoring the duos. Sometimes a duo can be informative. For instance Father ..missing Mother 1/2 Proband 1/1 This duo shows th...

Command-line editing re-visited.
...and Jason Turner. Thanks to all who responded. (2) New questions: ================== (a) Now my ``m'' key won't work in R!!! When I press ``m'' the machine just beeps. All other keys seem to work O.K. What's going on and how do I fix it? (The ``m'' key is only recalcitrant in R; if I quit R and go back to the Unix shell, ``m'' works fine.) OpenSSH 5.1: call for testing
Hi, OpenSSH 5.1 is almost ready for release, so we would appreciate testing on as many platforms and systems as possible. This release is one of the biggest in recent years, with two hackathons' worth of improvements and fixes for some of our most recalcitrant bugs. Snapshot releases for portable OpenSSH are available from http://www.mindrot.org/openssh_snap/ The OpenBSD version is available in CVS HEAD: http://www.openbsd.org/anoncvs.html Portable OpenSSH is also available via anonymous CVS using the instructions at http://www.openssh.com/portable....

An optim() mystery.
...optimized. The second part consists of various calls to optim(). Note that the code ***minimizes*** minus twice the log likelihood. Be aware that the calls to optim() take quite a while to execute; like 40 seconds on my laptop. Eternal gratitude for any words of wisdom on this matter! BTW, the recalcitrant parameter pair, used in the script below, is the pair of values which were used to simulate the data ``resi''. So they are the ``correct'' values. But optim() can't know that unless magic is loose in the world! Anyhow, there are other pairs, e.g. c(0.04,0.15),that result in t...

...gainst using FTP. I completely get all that. But I am making things a little bit safer by using virtual users that have no access to the file system. The ftp user account has a shell of /bin/false. And I was able to get proftpd working with SELinux using setsebool -P ftp_home_dir on. The client is recalcitrant to using any technology he doesn't know. I have tried explaining to him that SFTP would make things safer. But in the end it's his money and his choice. He owns all the content he's uploading, so it's really his neck if it gets owned. But I think I've done a reasonable job of ke...

Performing "gsm power off 1", "gsm power off 2", swapping the SIMs between these spans and then performing "gsm power on 1" and "gsm power on 2" results in the recalcitrant SIM registering on span 2, and the SIM formerly from span 2 not registering on span 1. I'm guessing the Quectel M20 GSM module on span 1 has got itself into a strange state; because it was also necessary to issue "gsm show span 1" to read the result of the last AT command (on othe...

nls function
Hello. I am trying to fit a non-rectangular hyperbola function to data of photosynthetic rate vs. light intensity. There are 4 parameters that have to be estimated. I find the nls function very difficult to use because it often fails to converge and then gives out cryptic error messages. I have tried playing with the control parameters but this does not always help. Is there another

Being Irish, my temper is always simmering, usually over ignorance or willful stupidity.? But, sometimes you just have to be the bad guy when people are recalcitrant.? Hence my stance in this thread.? I honestly have no problem being the bad guy if I have to be.? In this case, it was a situation where OP was already on the defensive after the first posts.? My input was much later, and was civil, even if not completely polite.? The fact remains trying slam t...

How robust is mle in R?
A newbie question: I'm trying to decide whether to run a maximum likelihood estimation in R or Stata and am wondering if the R mle routine is reasonably robust. I'm fairly certain that, with this data, in Stata I would get a lot of complaints about non-concave functions and unproductive steps attempted, but would eventually have a successful ML estimate. I believe that, with the

Proposal to change Samba contribution copyright policy.
Hi all, Some history. Samba has historically only accepted code with personal, not corporate copyright attached. There were a couple of good reasons for this in the past, one of which was that we preferred GPL enforcement decisions to be made by individuals, not by corporations. Under GPLv2, a license violator loses all rights under the license and these have to be reinstated by the copyright
