Recalcitrant CSS background-image
My app has a stylesheet that includes this definition:
div.loadimage
{
width:580px;
height:310px;
background-image: url("/images/load.gif") no-repeat center 0% 0%;
}
The purpose is to use with some nice javascript by Patrick H. Lauke for
fading in images. The div is supposed to include a "loading image" image
which is overwritten by the final image when it has finished

Error on man page
Hi
I discovered a similar problem early this week and a colleage on irc was
told it was a copy and paste error.
in man syslogd, the following can be found:
Sucker rod def. -- 3/4, 7/8 or 1in. hardened steel rod,
male threaded on each end. Primary use in the oil industry in Western

That seems like an awfully convenient rug to sweep problems under.
Can?t fix a security problem? Corporate restrictions!
Can?t require sensible security defaults restrictions by default? Corporate restrictions!

Incomplete Trio in TDT analysis
I am involved in a study where, as in most of life, men demonstrate
themselves to be recalcitrant. So while we have many probands and most of
their mothers we only have about 50% of the trios being complete.
I have been running tdt and trio.types. It appears as if it is ignoring the
duos. Sometimes a duo can be informative. For instance
Father ..missing
Mother 1/2
Proband 1/1
This duo shows that

Command-line editing re-visited.
Quick summary:
- I got command line editing to work (thanks to all who
responded to me),
- but now my ``m'' key won't work in R (??!!??!!??),
- and I can't find how to get command-line editing to
use vi syntax.
More detail:
This posting consists of (1) a summary and thanks, and (2) some new

OpenSSH 5.1: call for testing
Hi,
OpenSSH 5.1 is almost ready for release, so we would appreciate testing
on as many platforms and systems as possible. This release is one of
the biggest in recent years, with two hackathons' worth of improvements
and fixes for some of our most recalcitrant bugs.
Snapshot releases for portable OpenSSH are available from
http://www.mindrot.org/openssh_snap/

An optim() mystery.
I have a Master's student working on a project which involves
estimating parameters of a certain model via maximum likelihood,
with the maximization being done via optim().
A phenomenon has occurred which I am at a loss to explain.
If we use certain pairs of starting values for optim(), it
simply returns those values as the ``optimal'' values, although
they are definitely not

selinux allow FTP
Guys,
I hear all your arguments against using FTP. I completely get all that.
But I am making things a little bit safer by using virtual users that have
no access to the file system. The ftp user account has a shell of
/bin/false. And I was able to get proftpd working with SELinux
using setsebool -P ftp_home_dir on.
The client is recalcitrant to using any technology he doesn't know. I have

Trouble with mixreg
Dear All
I am trying to estimate a mixture of regression and get the
following error using the mixreg package:
Error in y - yhat : non-conformable arrays
The instruction I used were:
x <- as.matrix(LRHUN)
y <- as.matrix(LRINTER)
TS <- list(list(beta=c(3.0,1.0),sigsq=1,lambda=0.4),
list(beta=c(0.0,1.0),sigsq=1,lambda=0.6))
prova <- mixreg(x,y, ncomp=2, theta.start=TS)

OpenVox G400P network registration problems
Is anybody intimately familiar with the OpenVox G400P card, or the Quectel M20
RF modules fitted to it?
I am having a strange network connectivity issue with just such a card, as
follows:
The card was previously used with four O2 SIMs, and -- once I mastered
creating message PDUs! -- worked beautifully, save for the fact that O2's

nls function
Hello. I am trying to fit a non-rectangular hyperbola function to data
of photosynthetic rate vs. light intensity. There are 4 parameters that
have to be estimated. I find the nls function very difficult to use
because it often fails to converge and then gives out cryptic error
messages. I have tried playing with the control parameters but this
does not always help.
Is there another

How robust is mle in R?
A newbie question: I'm trying to decide whether to run a maximum likelihood
estimation in R or Stata and am wondering if the R mle routine is reasonably
robust. I'm fairly certain that, with this data, in Stata I would get a lot
of complaints about non-concave functions and unproductive steps attempted,
but would eventually have a successful ML estimate. I believe that, with

Proposal to change Samba contribution copyright policy.
Hi all,
Some history. Samba has historically only accepted code
with personal, not corporate copyright attached.
There were a couple of good reasons for this in the past, one
of which was that we preferred GPL enforcement decisions
to be made by individuals, not by corporations.
Under GPLv2, a license violator loses all rights under the
license and these have to be reinstated by the copyright

SELinux - way of the future or good idea but !!!
Hi,
total newbie on CentOS. Just firing up an install of 5.5 on a development webserver. Installed Webmin, Awstats, PHPMyAdmin and Drupal successfully. Yet to work on Sendmail and Samba. SELinux in enforcing mode, reporting "SELinux preventing ifconfig (ifconfig_t) "read write" to /var/webminsessiondb.pag (var_t)".
Googled the error message without real success in finding fix
