NT PDC to Samba PDC migration
Hi all,
I read a few posts a while back from people who were trying to get this
done.
Has anyone succeeded in doing a transparent (or an
as-close-to-as-possible) migration of an NT4 PDC to a Samba PDC?
I know it entails stuff like snatching the passwords with pwdump or the
like, and importing them into smbpasswd/LDAP, and toying around with
RID's/SID's for the new PDC to make it look

LDAP Replication
>From Google searches, it seems that using SAMBA 2.2.7 + Open LDAP on Linux
patched for POSIX ACL support delivers a functional PDC/BDC pair, and that
directory replication can take place automatically once set up.
Could someone please confirm that this actually works?
The background to this issue is that we are moving a large number of NT4
file servers to a LINUX platform, but need to keep

libsmbclient
Hello all
I recently recompiled samba 2.2.5 with LDAP, SSL and libsmbclient as
additional configure options. I used the base 2.2.5-2mdk source package
(to the uninitiated, it's a Mandrake package).
LDAP works fine (as it had before), haven't really tested SSL, but
here's the kicker: I can't find libsmbclient anywhere - although I'm not
really sure what I'm looking for

Yes, search the archives for the procedure I posted on Nov 25 or
thereabouts.
The only "problem" as such is that if you need to keep the PDC around,...

Samba PDC + Winbind
Hello all.
First, a little background...
I recently downloaded samba-*-ldap-2.2.5-2mdk , installed on Mandrake
8.2 and got everything working fine.
I have LDAP installed for "single sign-on" support. I can use LDAP to
authenticate other Linux boxes, and have Samba as a PDC for some Win2000
boxes - all working fine. Linux users are the same as PDC users, except
for their passwords

Problem, Samba as PDC
Hi,
I'm new in Samba and want change a Windows PDC with Samba. (Is this possible?).
I'm testing and I can connect from the Windows workstation to the Samba Server. But when i want to login from the Windows Server with an samba account windows says 'Can't start session because machine account doesn't exists in the PDC or password is invalid'.
I don?t understand because

Windows Terminal Services
I install a PDC in a server with Red Hat Linux 7.3 and Samba 2.2.4.
We have another server with W2K Server and Windows Terminal Services installed.
I can connect from workstations to the Samba PDC and with rdesktop I can connect to Windows Terminal Server.
Now, I want to create a group for Terminal Services users and define a policy for that users. Any idea?

SAM from NT BDC to Samba
Hello!!
A customer of mine recently experienced a catastrophic failure of their
PDC, and their BDC is not running as stable as we'd like. They've
agreed to move PDC/BDC schema to Linux (currently they run NT4).
So the question is: having ONLY a BDC available for SAM database, how do
I extract that so I can replicate that to Samba and do a "transparent"
upgrade (if possible)?

Samba 2.2.5, smbsh and Mandrake 8.2
Hi all
I'm currently using Samba 2.2.5 with LDAP support on my PDC and normal
(no-LDAP) on other Linux boxes I have, and smbsh keeps failing with this
error:
ERROR: can't get smbw shared lock (Invalid argument)
Does anyone know what's up? Is smbsh broken in general (obviously it is
in my case)?

Strange issue with pam_smbpass
Hello all!!
Something strange is happening recently with pam_smbpass.so.
I get the errors:
passwd: PAM unable to dlopen(pam_smbpass.so)
passwd: PAM [dlerror: pam_smbpass.so: undefined symbol: ldap_value_free]
passwd: PAM adding faulty module: pam_smbpass.so
And the passwd command returns "Module unknown".
The rest of Samba is working fine as a PDC - can log in, out, copy
files, etc.

Samba & NSS_LDAP
Hi all!
A while ago I caught a discussion re Samba and LDAP SAM backend, with
OpenLDAP and nss_ldap.
It seems that the reason the smbd process keeps crashing (and thus
losing connections) has something to do with the fact that the LDAP
standard allows connections to be unilaterally closed by the directory
server, and this was causing Samba to crash.
Again - this is my hazy recollection of the

Possible PDC security hole re/machine accounts
Hey all!
I was fiddling with some LDAP stuff for fun's sake, and I ran into this
strange situation. The situation occurred with both my stock Samba and
my modifications applied.
I had a Win2000 Advanced Server machine already joined into the domain
and working perfectly with PDC logons through the Samba server (v2.2.7,
LDAP-SAM backend, OpenLDAP 2.0.25).
While testing if the searches were

Dropped connections with Win98
Hi all.
I have recently installed a Samba-2.2.7 as a PDC with LDAP backend. All
works "as expected", with three exceptions:
1) Sometimes, the Win98/ME clients drop connections to the server
(persistent mapped shares cease to work). This happens when the
computer has been left idle for a few minutes. the deadtime parameter
is NOT set (i.e., it's at its default of 0, to disable

TDB to text
I seem to recall the existence of a utility to convert (dump?) TDB files
into text format so one could peruse the contents. I also seem to
recall that one could do the reverse - build a TDB from a text file.
Is this true? Does this utility exist? Would I have to hack my own out
of the TDB code in Samba?

Samba, AD Server, possibilities?
Hello all!
It's been asked several times whether Samba can act as an
ActiveDirectory server, and the answer has always been a categorical NO.
However, I don't recall seeing any thread dealing with the question of
whether such functionality COULD be developed.
Obviously, it WOULD be *possible* to develop this functionality (in the
strict sense of the word possible), but would doing it

Off-topic tcpdump/samba
Hello all
I've been doing some TCP dumps of Samba among other things, to try to
fish out a slight communications glitch that I suspect has to do with a
bad IP stack on an older machine, and I'm wondering if any of you could
help make my life a bit easier:
When doing the dump, I used the '-C' flag which causes capture files to
be rotated when they reach a certain size. I made the

Samba, LDAP, PDC and udding users
Hi all!
I've had a lot of success setting up Samba PDC's using the LDAP-SAM
backend, and got password sync working between Unix (LDAP) passwords and
Samba passwords.
I can also have other Linux boxes use Winbind to auth vrs. the PDC and
thus achieve the same password sync functionality (i.e., Samba changes
both PAM and Samba passwords, as well as checking them). Naturally,
this also
