response to The r3mix review (fwd)
Yes, r3mix found a bug, no it's not a serious one.
It's amazing how something small gets overblown like this. The r3mix reviewer
basically just hit the known short block trigger bug when doing his tests.
We've known about this bug since before the beta and haven't fixed it yet
because it was...

RC2 artifacts
Hello -- I desperately want to start using Ogg compression on music I
release on the internet, but I am encountering a fair amount of artifacts.
I noticed some in beta4 and was hoping they would disappear with RC1.
However, I've been playing with RC2 and I've still been banging my head into
a number of problems. A majority of the music I make has long drones with a
fair amount of spectral

Some pre-RC1 listening tests
Hello everyone,
ff123 compiled Monty's branch of the RC1 encoder, see his post on
r3mix.net forum:
http://66.96.216.160/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=c&action=display&num=994299736&start=30
Anyway it only supports ~128kbps mode, so I did a quick listening
test with some files that bugged vorbis beta4.

default quality settings...
...ted a wishlist item to it's
author to make the defailt -q instead of specifying bitrate. So for the
time being he has set it to -q5, without the ability to specify quality
on the command line, like bitrates for mp3. -q5 sounds high to me. He
said it should be at least the quality of lame with --r3mix. As I don't
know lame very well, I don't know what exactly that is.
Suggestions? What would be similar to to --r3mix? I'd guess -q4.99 would
also be "better" than -q5?

'Jukebox' quality?
...e I know about this whole field.
So, I'm making an appeal to the audio experts here. I want 'jukebox' quality,
meaning ~0 artifacts while maintaining a good compression ratio, but not
quite 'archival' (read high bitrate) as I don't mind hanging on to the original cds.
Is r3mix's recommended "lame -V1 -b128 -mj -h" good enough? Is this guy
and his study saying that it's *no where near* good enough as it seems? Is
this study for real, or is it bunk?
I realize that this seems like a question more suited to some mp3 mailing list,
but given that the ex...

masking problems in Vorbis beta?
Hi all,
I just came across the following page: http://r3mix.net
In the "News" section there is a fairly negative critique of Vorbis;
especially it is mentioned that Vorbis "has terrible masking
problems". There is also a Vorbis-encoded frequency sweep
which shows strong deficiencies at high frequencies, but
I suppose this is due to the q...

Nullsoft Vorbis Decoder v1.13a (BUG)
Hi, there.
Thanx for the update, Peter. That scrolling stuff working...but this
time, the information on the artists and the titles are not displayed
on the playlist till the song is being played. Is this happening to
only me (I am on Win98SE)?
At r3mix forum (http://r3mix.net/forum or http://r3mixforum.cjb.net),
there is a high-level discussion on the channel coupling implementation
on RC1 (or Beta4 + channel coupling, should I say?). Although this may
not be that flamboyant part of the development, Winamp must be quite
important to popularise th...

ogg to mp3 conversion
Howdy folks,
currently i am using a cygwin32 build of all tools on NT here at work.
most of my cd's are ripped to ogg files, but my mp3diskman is.. well an mp3 player. (http://www.soul.com.hk Its a nice player!)
i use:
ogg123.exe -d raw -f - "filename.ogg" | lame --r3mix -r - filename.mp3
Is there a better way of doing this, for instance passing the tags through as well? I am trying to avoid using a gui.
Many thanks,

bitstream problem: resyncing...
This one really has me stumped.
I'm running 866MHz, 256MB RAM, 80GB Disk (7200RPM) on Linux-mandrake 8.2
icecast 1.3.12 & ices 0.2.3 & lame 3.91
all mp3s encoded with lame 3.91 or higher and --r3mix (VBR)
Sorry for the long email but I'm hoping to get someone out there that's seen
this before and give me some advice...
I'm continually getting errors like this when running my icecast server
w/ices:
Here's the console output from ices:

FLAC to mp3 batch converter?
I'm just wondering if someone wrote a perl script to convert
a directory with flac files into mp3 and preserving the id3 tag
from flac to mp3?
I have two harddrives where I keep my favorite CDs in flac and others in mp3 but
when I get tired of them, I move them into mp3 and rather than popping the
original CD in, it might be easier to just convert from flac to mp3 directly.
Please cc me on

RC2 worse than RC1 and Beta4
After doing an informal (128k) listening test, I have concluded that I
prefer Beta4 over RC2.
The 16kHz low-pass on the RC2 encoder makes it sound like FM radio. Both
encoders SEEM to have a couple of dB bump at 10kHz.

Difficult sample for vorbis w/ audible artifacts
...heard of some other low
frequency artifacts on heavy bass notes with vorbis in the past but I'm not
sure if they were supposed to have been addressed yet or not, and I'm not
positive this case is caused by the same thing either.
There has already been some discussion about this clip on the r3mix.net
forum for those interested, though it has mainly been centered around mp3.
There is some mention of testing it with vorbis in there however:

ices behaves unpredictably in the face of VBR mp3s. It's on the TODO
list, but I've never had the time to really investigate.

Web-based forum for Vorbis discussion
Hi all,
a web based forum has been set up for discussion
about Ogg Vorbis. It's meant to be a home for both
technical issues and general usage questions.
If you were familiar with the old r3mix forums,
this is more or less the next generation. It also
includes forums for MPC, AAC and MP3/MP3Pro discussion.
Further listening test (including the Vorbis ones)
are also going to be conducted from there.

more fun with LAME - error in bitstream?
...bps.
I have:
Linux-Mandrake 8.2
Icecast 1.3.12
IceS 0.2.2 source
Lame 3.92
Hardware is: Celeron 533 w/256MB RAM, 40GB Disk
All seems to work at first but after a few songs it craps
out and give me an ERROR WITH BITSTREAM (or something real
close...sorry).
ALL of my MP3s are encoded using the --r3mix flag (VBR)
with LAME 3.91 or 3.89.
All works great if I stream the VBR straight out (works
days on end with NO problems...just a little bandwidth
unfriendly).
Any possible causes here? I'm pretty sure my MP3s are good
if VBR is OK.
Should I back off to Lame 3.91?
Could my LOG file per...

Archival quality for music
This mail depends upon the fact that I don't have a couple of good
earphones ;-)
I read in the site that q=6 is a very high quality, but does it contain
perceivable differencies from the original? (for 95% of people, of course).
I also found q=6 to produce files slightly bigger (1/10 bigger) than those
produced with lame VBR q=2 (about 192 bps on average). I always thought

Such a nice codec! Soundcard recommendations?
Wow! Ogg is sounding _really_ fine these days. Waaaay past my
ability to tell from CD on my crappy sound card, even at pretty low
bitrates. Which leads to my question: there's a huge difference
between what my sound card puts out and what my CD player can do
(Rotel RCD-950 to Classe' Audio Twenty preamp to Acurus A80 amp to
Epos ES-12 speakers, in case anyone cares). If my computer is
