How much Ruby?
I bought the pickaxe about 1 1/2 months ago, and I have been reading through
it and learning Ruby in my spare time. I''m about 200 pages into it, and I''m
starting to think I don''t need to know all of the in''s and out''s of Ruby to
get a good hang on Rails.
How much Ruby do I really need to be proficient in Rails? Ruby is a great
language, I love it, but

Accessing Facter in other languages than Ruby?
Hi all,
We''re writing a few scripts at the moment that could really make use of
Facter, however the vast majority of them team (including my self!) are not
proficient in Ruby, however they are highly proficient in other languages such
as (dare I say it!) Python.
Is there (or are there any plans to!) release bindings for other languages to
enable facts to be used in scripts other

Scripting capabilities for R
I'm in the final week of teaching a course to beginners using R and
S-Plus. Since I forbade the students from using the "point-and-click"
interface in S-Plus, they've become reasonably proficient at using the
command line in both programs.
Students really like the speed and ease-of-use of R for the vast majority
of their projects. I think they'd switch to R completely

How can I get rid of "cohort 4" in Group?
Thanks!

dropping capabilities in lxc containers
Hi there
I’m not quite proficient with libvirt yet, and have been using it so far primarily to manage lxc containers
I was hoping to find a means to configure the set of capabilities that guests should drop, but came across a few web pages suggesting these were set in stone in the code
is this correct, or is there a means to tweak this set from the host via the xml config or a virsh command ?

Converting SAS Code
I wish to second this approach to learning R.
I tried for several years to translate other stat programs or provide
parallel analyses with R.
This dabbling-in-R approach did not work
.
When a transferred to a research unit that could ill afford commercial
software, I devoted my entire time to doing everything in R.
This was a difficult learning process, but I eventually became proficient

Listing knowledge of R as a skill on a resume...
Afternoon folks:
This question may be a touch off-topic, but I had to start
somewhere.
As I become more proficient with R I would like to play up
the point in the computer skills section of my resume. Can
anybody on the list provide an idea or two as to what might
be an appropriate way to do this? Is it a language or an
application? What's a proper description for it?
I leave to

Samba "Preferred Platform"
I have set up several OpenSuSE 10.3 File Servers...
These are small environments, 5 - 15 workstations.
They are purely File (and possibly Application) Servers....
All are AMD64.
Since the Servers only purpose in life is to support Samba.
1.) Is there a platform Linux/Unix, where Samba is better supported...?
2.) Does Samba utilize a 64 bit environment, or is it better to
install 32 bit

GWD button drawing prob-- any Cairo pro have insights?
Since I first tried nVidia's AIGLX with Compiz I've been seeing some pretty
consistent drawing problems on GWD's minimize and maximize buttons on hover.
It looks like part of the fill is drawn with low alpha. I haven't been able to
duplicate it when using Xgl... Here's a quick vid of what I'm seeing:
