Help with R Installation on Debian 2.2.19 (old stable/potato)
Hi all,
I hope this is the correct list to post such a question.
I was trying to install the R-project on Debian and encountered significant
problems with the same.
The main problem is the installation of the libc6 package. I need this
package in order to install the R-core package. However, the libc6 is
dependent on the libdb1-compat package, which just refuses to install on my
server.

match operator in find
...d to use the match operator (=~) in a find operation? Or is it not possible? I''ve got some data items from an external source that could be capitalized or not. So right now I''m stuck with doing:
Item.find(:first,
:conditions => ["name = ? or name =?", Potatoes, potatoes])
I''d prefer to do:
Item.find(:first,
:conditions => ["name =~ ?", /(P|p)otatoes])
The first works, but it doesn''t seem very Rails-like. I''m getting nil results on the second.
TIA,
Bill

Subject: Debian package problems
Hi. First of all, congratulations on the nice job. I downloaded your
Debian packages for the libraries and ogg123, but the dependencies are
wrong: the stable version of Debian (potato) ships with libc6 version
2.1.3, but your packages require version 2.1.97.
The packages can still be installed and the program works, but it is
not a smooth process. They are left unconfigured and error messages
will pop up at every other package install.
The solution is as simple as making the p...

Can't upgrade R properly with Debian potato
Hello-
I had to reinstall my system completely, due to a cracker (a script kiddie).
I've added the CRAN recommended lines to my sources.list.
I removed my old R package (0.92, I believe) and intalled a new one, but it's
the 1.3.1
If I remember correctly, this is not the __latest__ version is it?
What's happening than, since my /etc/apt/sources.list is correct?
TIA

[O-T] rsync security bug on Debian potato
Hello-
This is off-tpoic, but of interest.
There's a remote exploit bug on rsync, that was posted on Linux Today.
I post this here because apparently it hasn't been mentioned (yet) on the
Debian security advisory. The package list is not updated either.
Perhaps this is what happened to CRAN when it was cracked...
Maybe you admins at CRAN would want to contact the debian-security

openssh-2.1.1p1 on Debian slink and potato
Just today I compilied openssh-2.1.1p1 on Debian Slink and Potato both to come out with the same problem.
I am compiling them with openssl-0.9.5a.. The configure line I use for openssh is below:
./configure --sysconfdir=/etc/ssh --prefix=/usr --with-ssl-dir=../openssl-0.9.5a
So I compile, do a make install restart the sshd daemon and everything seems fine.

missing ctest and methodological question
Hi,
I couldn't figure out how to use the functions from the
ctest library. I'm using the r-base package that comes with
debian potato. library("ctest") told me that no such package
existed. I checked the CRAN, but no such package was
availiable, instead I was told that it would be part of the
standard installation. But functions from ctest like
shapiro-wilk don't work. The only thing I found was a

icecast security
...mote exploit (and others)
Debian-specific: no
In Debian Security Advisory DSA-089-1 we reported that icecast-server
has several security problems. For details please see that advisory.
The i386 package mention in the DSA-089-1 advisory was incorrectly
compiled and will not run on Debian GNU/Linux potato machines. This
has been corrected in version 1.3.10-1.1.
