vector operation using regexpr?
...cter. I want to get the index of that character in the second column and use it to extract the item from the third column. I can do this using a scalar method. But I'm not finding a vector method. An example is below. col1 col2 col3 'L' 'MAIL ' 'PLOY' What I want to do with the above is find the index of col1 in col2 (4) and then use it to extract the character from col3 ('Y'). I could do the last part if I could get the index in a vector fashion. So, the shorter question is, how do I get the index of the letter in col1 as...

A day of trying to get something to work
...the point where I think it could be useful, something happens. The latest was a complaint at the very end of the extensive install for Brittanica encyclopedia, saying something couldn't be found. Why does everything have to allow you to get to the end before complaining? I think it's a ploy by Microsoft agents within the open source community, to demoralize the users so they'll either give up or spend more valuable hours of their lives futilely trying to escape the Microsoft net. So I say, just pay up, and have fun doing something less frustrating. And when Windows crashes wit...

Surprisingly it keeps starting from 0 regardless of the usage of the graphic parameter xlim. I tried many different combinations of the parameters appearing in the plot instruction. I also tried to sort the x-axis value in increasing order. > plot(sort(d...

Uniprocessor kernel booted after YUM update
...the default back to 0 has no effect, it still boots the 2.4.21-32.0.1.EL kernel and not the required SMP one. However, if we use the interactive GRUB boot menu & select the correct kernel interactively, it then boots SMP OK with both processors and all memory available. I tried the obvious ploy of removing the last three kernel entries in grub.conf & setting default=0 but it still manages to boot the 2.4.21-32.0.1.EL UP kernel even though it is no longer in the kernel menu list. We think we will disable automatic yum kernel updates in future , but meanwhile, has anyone any sugges...

I realize this isn't the Microsoft mailing list, just wondering if anybody has come across this problem and what they did to work around it - I'd really like to avoid having to run Microsoft stream authoring products if I could help it. Rdevices.h is not Included in Recent Packages
Hi, I am trying to install RSRuby (http://rubyforge.org/projects/rsruby/) which somewhat analogous to RPy. Installation fails using the cran R 2.8.0 packages for Ubuntu Intrepid because RDevices.h does not appear to be included in the r-cran-core package as it was previously. It is in the rbase_2.8.0.orig.tar.gz in the same directory meaning it hasn't been taken out of R altogether, and I

This is interesting. I've never though of using copyright to attempt to prevent embrace and extend ploys by commercial venders. But in the end, it seems futile. A big company like Microsoft has enough resources to reimplement libFLAC should they wish. Then they can embrace and extend without worry about copyright. So I would recommend a Public Domain ``license''. I really don't under...

File upload/database import
I have been using Ruby on Rails for around 6 weeks now (so far I love it), but I''ve gotten to a point in the application where I need to allow the user to upload comma deliminated text files that will get loaded into one of the database tables. Before I get started doing this, I was wondering anyone knows of any examples or tutorials that deal with this. I''d rather do it

Need to replicate Boltzman Signmodial Curve fit from Graph Pad
Hello useRs (please don't kill me), I've fairly new to R having only a few months of playing around with R. What little I've learned has been extremely useful. If someone could point me as to how to replicate the Boltzman Sigmodial curve fit as provided by Graphpad software I'd be eternally grateful. Where we currently use Graphpad for only this one function, its seems highly

Macintosh support (again)
In order to compile the latest Vorbis library on the Macintosh, the change appended to this message needs to be made to os_types.h.in. Then, anyone who wants to actually build it must first copy os_types.h.in to os_types.h by hand, since MacOS does not include a command line and thus cannot run configure. It really bugs me that the whole "platforms which don't support configure
