Ogg Vorbis in Creative products petition
Hi all dudes.
We're organizing a petition to ask Creative to include Ogg Vorbis
support in one of their next firmware releases of their
digital players. This is very important for two reasons:
1) Creative is a big company. If they include Ogg support in their
digital players, other manufacturers will follow the example.
2) This shoul...

I started this petition the other day.

"Linux aux petits oignons" - Book about Linux based on CentOS 5.3 (french)
Hi,
The last six months, I've been busy writing "Linux aux petits oignons",
a general introduction to GNU/Linux. The book is aimed at the beginner
(or intermediate) reader, though :
1) it's *not* based on Ubuntu, but on CentOS 5.3
2) it doesn't shy away from explaining basic UNIX concepts
3) it favours the use of simple command-line tools

Hi Chris, I remember you from hacks.mozilla (although I am an Opera
supporter). The webmaster of Xiph told me to tell the members and readers
about the petition, sadly it has only reached few because I cannot create
a post about it.

process for petitioning for more flac hardware support
i was wondering how one would go about approaching hardware manufacturers to
support flac.
i get the sense that in the case of phatnoise, one of their devs already
knew about flac and took the initiative (although if this isn't the case,
please correct me).
but how would you go about asking say, apple, to add flac support to the
ipod? the ipod can already play a number of formats,

Platform independent solution to watch "Streaming Service of the Council of the European Union.

they express a really strange opinion about this: 'The live streaming
media service of the Council of the European Union can be viewed on
Microsoft Windows and Macintosh platforms. We cannot support Linux in a

has been set up to create pressure to convince the EU council to change
its service to one that is platform independent." (slashdot)

"Linux aux petits oignons" - Book about Linux, based on CentOS 5.x
Hi,
I'm currently busy finishing "Linux aux petits oignons", a practical
introduction to Linux, aimed primarily at the frustrated Windows user.
This is the first of two volumes, it's written in french, and all
examples in the book are based on CentOS. (Note: looks like I'll have to
update some screenshots to 5.3 :oD)

Petition to set warnPartialMatch* options to TRUE during R CMD check by default
Hi all,
What it says in the title. This is likely to cause a lot of CRAN packages
to fail (I can try and quantify this if seen fit), but I think it's for the
best. Packages should not (IMHO) be relying on partial matching in package
code / tests. One might be more permissive for vignette/examples code,
though I still find it poor practice.
Among many reasons why package authors should resist

One thing to do first might be to make sure that flac is suitable to
run on lost cost hardware. For example the amount of buffering required
in the decoder.
If I understand the flac format correctly, all decoders must support
block sizes upto 65535 samples (ie 256k of decoded stereo

Patents on algorithms harm data analytic services
...en source implementation (called R) a private company can sell a commercial implementation (S+ by MATHSOFT) which offers certain advantages. It is rather the other way round: the existence of free algorithms and free software pushes software developers to improve their products, such free market competition pushes the new economy. The real big business and the real big challenge of modern software is achieving integration, not having unique or secret algorithms. It's an old economy idea to put a patent on an algorithm and to lean back waiting for money to come.
Software patenting does not only...

I just noticed that two key pieces of information are not given by
the summary() command: N and SD. we are given the N missing, but
not the converse. I know these summary value can be obtained easy,
but can't understand why these two pieces of information are not
provided with the other info.
Thanks,
