OSX requires sudo for using ports < 1024
...run'' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/mongrel-0.3.14 /bin/mongrel_rails:235 from /usr/local/bin/mongrel_rails:18 Mongrel runs without sudo on all other ports > 1024 otherwise. Anyone have the reason that these ports require sudo? Me and Matt Pelletier wrote a small PDF book on Mongrel entitled: "Mongrel: Serving, Deploying, and Extending Your Ruby Applications" since we really wanted you to know what it was about. It''s published by Addison Wesley Professional, has just over 100 pages of goodness, and is available for $14.99...

Time To Pick the Mongrel BUGS Mascot!
Bradley Taylor shot me this *goldmine* of ugly ugly ugly dogs: http://www.sonoma-marinfair.org/uglydogvote.shtml I *have* to use one of these for the Mongrel BUGS Mascot. He''ll go on our bug list page and replace the little beetles on the left. Pick the dog you think best represents a lovable but defective pooch and reply to this with your +1. File descriptor leak (?) in Python
Hi all, Recently I have upgraded a Python application from Xapian 1.0.7 to 1.2.2 in order to use the PostingSource class. It is a long-running process, and I am seeing the number of open file descriptors to the Xapian database steadily increase. I suspect what I am seeing is some kind of resource leak. I have no idea if it is a problem in our code or in the Xapian Python bindings. How do I debug

Index indexed words
Hello, We would like to create Google or Firefox like "search hints". If someone types "abc", the search system should name some possible hints. I think, Firefox does it by indexing 3-characters of the domain name. If you enter parts, you get some hints. Thank you very much Marcus

Rails Web Services
This deals with the Rails book, but ActionWebService in general. I''m having trouble getting the Rails book''s example in the Web Service chapter working. Everything else works (all the ''depot'' site features up to that point have been built and work). I don''t think it''s an issue with the book code being wrong, because the ActionWebService API

Weibull maximum likelihood estimates for censored data
Hello! I have a matrix with data and a column indicating whether it is censored or not. Is there a way to apply weibull and exponential maximum likelihood estimation directly on the censored data, like in the paper: Backtesting Value-at-Risk: A Duration-Based Approach, P Chrisoffersen and D Pelletier (October 2003) page 8? The problem is that if I type out the code as below the likelihood ratio is greater than one. > Interest D C 1 17 1 2 10 0 3 15 0 4 2 0 5 42 0 6 53 0 7 193 0 8 11 0 9 2 0 10 8 0 11 12 1 library(stats4) dur_ind_test = func...

Expert feedback needed
Hello list, Some time ago I was looking for apache (as non balanced proxy) + mongrel configurations. Almost everybody seemed to use similar approaches (one of these could be found @ mongrel.rubygorge.org docs) with mod_rewrite. I don''t use proxy_balancer because I don''t need it at the moment (my site has pretty low traffic). This is apache configuration that I''m using

Survfit: why different survival curves but same parameter estimates?
...e one from survfit(model1). They are quite different. Looking at my data, I would say that the results of survfit(model1) are plausible but not the results from survfit(model2). I would very much welcome any comments or suggestions. -- Denis ------------------------------------------------ Denis Pelletier Department of Economics Poole College of Management North Carolina State University Box 8110 Raleigh, NC 27695-8110, USA phone: (+1) 919 513 7408 fax: (+1) 919 515 5613 http://www4.ncsu.edu/~dpellet

any way to recover card after cursor disappears or card locks up
With an Asus ENGT430 card, which the box says is a GeForce GT 430, and with 64-bit Mageia 1 with kernel 2.6.38.8-server-10.mga, about once a week, the mouse cursor disappears from at least one monitor or the display locks up when exiting X. (I use runlevel 3 and startx.) Usually, if the cursor disappears and I then exit X, the display will lock up showing the X root window background. Once the

Generating barcodes (as gif/jpg)
Hello Rubyists, I need to generate barcodes (in UPC and codabar symbologies) and would like to know if anyone has done this with Ruby. From what I can tell, it would be possible to use the gnu-barcode [1] or barcodewriter [2] to generate a PostScript, then through RMagick (via GhostScript) take the file and create a GIF/JPG. These will really only be used for web display (to be printed
