Unable to Connect to OpenVMS Pathworks
...excuse me if this
is the wrong list to post on (if it is please just let me know). I've
recently upgraded my old Redhat 8.0 box to Redhat Fedora Core 8 which
comes with Samba 3.x while my old Redhat 8.0 box had Samba 2.x. On my
old box I had SMB map a drive from an older OpenVMS server using
Pathworks. I performed this by simply doing:
mount //alpha/alpha /nobackup/usb2 -o username=user,password=pw
However, when I do this now with my new server and Samba 3.x I get the
following error:
mount error 112 = Host is down
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)...

Samba-3.0.2a and pathwork server smbmount problem
When I tried to mount a share folder from a pathwork vms server, I get
the message 'protocol initiation failed'. I get this message since I've
upgrade to the kernel version 2.4.25 and to samba 3.02a.
I don't get this message with my old config (samba-2.2.28a and
kernel-2.4.28). Is somethings has hanged with smbmount between these 2

file limits using SAMBA
Is there a limit to the number of files that can be seen through SAMBA
Shares. We currently have approximately 120,000 files (and growing)
under business related shares under our current Pathworks environment.
With being in the process of transferring over to SAMBA we need to
ensure that all the files are viewable.
It may be advisable to split these shares across several disks on our
UNIX environment. Any suggestions would be beneficial.

Dissapearence of samba servers.
We have a LAN network consisting mostly of Win95 machines, with a couple
of NT boxes and 3 Linux-based Samba servers. Throw in a VAX running
Pathworks and a partridge in a pear tree.
Anyway, it seems that since Monday all three of the Samba boxes have
dissapeared from the browse lists (from the POV of the Windows users).
Typing in \\server only gives a "Network name not found error." However,
each of the samba servers can mount share...

Slow Printer Connection (net use ... )
net use lpt1: \\node\prt
On a slow VMS Box with pathworks this cmd runs in 1 sec.
On a Dual 1G Linux Box with 2.2.7 samba it takes about 7-8 seconds on a 350 PC.
I am using lprng and loading the printers from the printcap file.
Does anyone have any idea's on how to speed this up?
I tried it on several samba servers and it works the same on all of...

At the same time, the following is logged on the server:

List of magic wins numbers
Hi,
I am looking for a list of theses special magic numbers that a samba
server (or a windows box) registers with at a wins server.
I already know of <00> as a ordinary name, <1b> as a domain. But what's
the rest? Is there a list anywhere? Perhaps somewhere in the docs? I
have searched them but haven't found anything yet.
Thanks,
Christopher

3 OS/2 Server, 120 user, we waited to avoid W*-Server, is now the time? How?
Hallo,

Linux printer shows in Net Neighborhood, but "No Access"
Hello all,
Been using Samba for a looooonnnng time, and with great success I might
add. This is the first time in EVER that I've needed to ask ANYTHING
regarding it, so easy is it to config and admin. Kudos to the Aussie that
wrote it. Even if he initially thought it was Pathworks... 8-)
ANYWAY... I've never really been able to use Samba as a print server. For
some reason, when I add a printer to my Linux box (and having the standard
[Printers] section in my smb.conf file), I SEE the printer in my Network
Neighborhood, and I can even install the printer on my Wind...

smbclient and smbmount do not yield same results
I am trying to connect with smbmount to a VAX/VMS system running, I

getting a list of registered users from PDC
...ink I may need samba to solve it).
I simply want to be able to list all usernames registered for a domain,
and ideally also get lists of who is logged on to/from where at that
moment.
The setup here is a bit 'quirky' - an NT domain which only has minimal
NT, mainly DEC alpha's running Pathworks under VMS and Digital UNIX. The
PDC is one of these. Attempting to use the 'net' commands on a UNIX
machine fail to return all known users, or better still simply core
dump.
I want to get lists of existing accounts for some UNIX based account
management scripts (ie 'does this user alr...

Network Computing Newsletter article...
Hey gang...
An SMB server comparison article just showed up at Network Computing.
http://www.networkcomputing.com/1104/1104f3.html
They compare three SMB servers including Samba 2.0.6 and we took
first place (barely). Zinged us on central administration. Compaq's
SMB server has central configuration and administration of multiple
servers, which they liked a lot, apparently.

3 OS/2 Server, 120 user, we waited to avoid W*-Server, is now the time? How? (no win english ;-))
Hi,
the subject says almost everything.
For a better understandig, here is the background:
after sending pathworks servers to EOL we installed a OS/2 server system.
And we waited a long time to go to the next evolutionary step. Until now.
We are using file and print services. The user count is growing to 150. We
have 2 locations connected by a VPN.
Our own wish has been a NAS with uUserauthentification by L...

Patches for OpenVMS && Samba4
...Okay, that helps to know. I'll try to talk to the VSI people directly.
> This is the first I've heard of VMS in most of the 20 years I've been
> around Samba.
OpenVMS is still alive. We still have a lot of customers who use one of
three products for CIFS/SMB on VMS. The oldest Pathworks which I think is
just a basic LANmanager client. Then there is "Advanced Server" which I
think is a straight port of Lanmanager (bought directly from IBM then
worked up to be VMS-ish). There is also a Samba 2.x package which HP
ported before they divorced and underwent mitosis into H...

Patches for OpenVMS && Samba4
Refer to this:
https://legacyos.org/vsi-introduces-new-samba-release/
I noticed that VSI, the new owners of VMS, have created a package for
Samba4 under OpenVMS. I also notice the samba-vms list appears to be
abandoned (for years). So, I apologize for posting here on the general
list, but it seemed fruitless trying the dedicated list.
I am under the impression that the GPL v3 compels all

...lorer hangs.
If I try to drop the explorer by the task manager the PC hangs and a cold
start is required.
Using samba 2.0.9 this condition is cleared after 120 seconds, on samba
2.2.0 it needs about 10 minutes to clear this condition.
Running the same procedure on a shared homed on a NT-Server, a Pathworks
server or an advanced server does not show any problem.
Can anybody help me, which parameter determines the hanging period on a
samba server?
