New Rails Site: Wordie
My latest stupid web trick, built, with love, in Rails:
http://wordie.org
Make lists of words. See who else likes the same words. Basically, it''s
a dating site. Built on thanksgiving while half-watching football and
launched yesterday. In other words, half-baked, but I thought some of
you might find it mildly amusing.

Xenserver Host looses network connectivity
Hi All.
I have a problem on one of our Citrix boxes.
We have SQL Server running server 2005 and a Citrix server running the
pastel evolution client as virtual machine on Xenserver 5.5
The Citrix server will loose network connectivity intermittently.
And at this point the pastel evolution client''s connection will timeout
to the SQL server.
His happens very erratically.
I have tried uninstalling the pv drivers...

Difference between smbclient&smbmount
Hi there,
We're currently having problems mounting share from a windows server 2003
machine.
The thing that I find surprising is about smbclient : in fact, I'm allowed to
browse the share with the command smbclient :
# smbclient //adoc/pastel -U mathus%9g8e
Domain=[MIPIH] OS=[Windows Server 2003 3790] Server=[Windows Server 2003 5.2]
smb: \>
And when I try to mount this share with smbmount, here's what I get :
p-emapb:/# smbmount //adoc/pastel /adoc/ -o username=mathus,password=9g8e81ae
cli_negprot: SMB signing is mandatory and...

levelplot and source() problems
...been using levelplot but have had trouble calling it inside
functions - something seems to go wrong when it's not called directly from
the R command prompt. Simplest reproducible example:
$ R --vanilla
> library(lattice)
> levelplot(matrix(1:4,2,2))
- This gives a nice plot in soothing pastel colors.
Now, with a file lptest.r containing 2 lines:
library(lattice)
levelplot(matrix(11:14,2,2))
> source("lptest.r")
Gives nothing.
I've tried closing all devices and setting it with X11() and pdf().
Am I missing something here or should I file a bug report? I'm runni...

R-alpha: Colors
...larger change.
I would like to make the color table, user definable. To do this
there needs to be a function
palette(name, value)
where "name" could be used to select one on a number of standard
built-in palettes (e.g. "default", "heat", "terrain", "pastels" etc)
and (if name was not specified, "value" could be a character vector of
color specifications (of length less than or equal to 256?). Either
names (e.g. "red", "lightblue" ...) or by rgb values (e.g "#FF00FF")
could be used in the vector.
The fun...

setting trellis auto.key color values
...main = "Alligator Nesting Performance", ylab= "Mean HSI",
auto.key = list("top", columns=3, col=c(3:5))
this script creates the graph nicely, with the qualification that the color
for the key titles are the correct, but the filling colors are default
pastels. Where do I change them ?
Windows XP with R 2.8.1
Thank you.

Registering scripts using WINE
...e installed templets and it crashes telling me that the scripts have not been installed/registered.
Therefore, my question: how does Wine manage registering scripts into regedit.exe? Is there a way around this so that I can make this work?
PS: Will I encounter the same problem if I had to install Pastel Partner?
I thank you in advance for the time taken and await a soon reply.
Kind regards,

CentOS 6.4: sound not working
Good morning,
I've got a new system with a fresh 6.4 installation. I didn't check
if the sound worked at first but I know it doesn't now. :)
The system board is an ASRock Extreme6. The Specs say it has
a Realtek ALC1150 audio chipset and 7.1 channels.
I'm running KDE and an Nvidia X driver (I need the video
performance of this driver - sorry about that). The System

virtualization on the desktop a myth, or a reality?
...amp; RAM resources than what is actually needed by most. I'm not
talking about developers / graphic designers / etc. I'm talking about
Bob, who uses his PC for email, internet, document writing, etc and
needs to boot into Windows if he feels like playing Warcraft III or
StarCraft II, or use Pastel, etc.
Wouldn't it be nice to run Windows, of for that matter Solaris /
FreeBSD / MAC (graphics designer) / another flavor of Linux / etc
inside your favorite Linux, and access it from the Desktop without too
much trouble?

Merbivore.com - Mockups
There''s been some discussion on the IRC channel about getting a site
for Merb going. Since the culture around the project is pretty
casual, I figured I''d just throw a few ideas together, see what you
guys think.
So, firstly here are three example pages, just to show off the
general look and feel.

Bug in R graphics device (PR#7271)
Full_Name: Hem Nalini Morzaria Luna
Version: 2.00.00
OS: Windows XP
Submission from: (NULL) (128.104.98.229)
When using the plot(), when no previous graphics devices are open, the text in
the GUI disappears. Even if I close the graphics device I can't see the cursor.
But it is still there, because I can type another plot() command. I had to close
R and open it again for the GUI to return to

[LLVMdev] LLVM Parallel IR
I'm part of a research group at MIT looking to create an extension of LLVM
that inherently allows one to nicely code a parallel loop.
Most parallel frameworks tend to take the body of a parallel loop and stick
it inside of a function for the parallel runtime to call when appropriate.
However, this makes optimizations significantly more difficult as most
compiler optimizations tend to be

Suggested color schemes for points, not regions?
I have seen a couple of posts about color schemes like those at the
ColorBrewer site. Most recently:
http://geography.uoregon.edu/datagraphics/color_scales.htm
These color schemes can work very well for regions (bars, polygons,
images, etc.) but are not very suitable for points and/or lines.
Is anyone aware of research/suggestions for a color scheme to use for
scatter plots? I've looked at
