[new user] VPN or NAT? (and a FAQ)
I live in Tennessee, USA, and work 1000km away in Texas. Thanks to the wonders of broadband I never leave home (well, not for WORK, that is. :) I'm setting up an Asterisk system whereby I'll have an extension in Texas, so clients can reach me at a local telephone number. We have a VPN set up already (OpenVPN, which I highly recommend to anyone needing such a thing.) It does

Samba performance tuning & benchmarks
...al queries are slower when accessing files on the Samba server, additional queries from the same Win95 client are 10X faster than when accessing the same database on the NT server. Oh - and one last thing. The server hardware is comparable in both cases, with the exception that the NT server has a P166, whereas the Samba/Linux server has a slower P100 processor. RAM and disk I/O performance characteristics are comparable. Although processor speed could explain the discrepancy, I find it hard to believe, considering that subsequent database queries are faster on the Samba server. > Yes. It...

win98 vs win95 with TCP/IP
You wrote: I have been disappointed that I can't use Linux+Samba as an alternative to a Win9x or NT server for our GP medical practice. The software we need runs in win9x. We crave stability. But Linux+Samba is just much slower as a file server. It's normally quite fast: are you running over a dial-up network, requiring you to adust MTU's for speed??? If not, try ``socket

Getting vmlinux & initrd.gz file
Hello all, I'm trying to install Gentoo 1.4 rc2 for the first time on my laptop - HP Omnibook 5700ctx, P166, 128 MB RAM which cannot boot from CD-ROM. Apparenty Gentoo doesn't have a boot disk making utility. It's said that I must use tomsrbt or a slackware boot disk but I have none of those. & someone on Gentoo mailing list pointed out that I should try syslinux, Ok, downloaded that, done...

which version to install/???
Hello all now that I have finally got CyrusSASL to authenticate.... next up is installing Samba I'm running FreeBSD 5.2.1 and have the options in the ports tree of 2.2.11 and 3.0.6 In my test server intall I used 2.2.8 with success, and it is still running at home on a P166.... as a PDC but here at work it must work for mostly Win98SE machines, plus a couple of Win2000 and XP laptops. And in the future we'll have more W2k and XP of course. 22 seats this month, more in the future. I will be using disk quotas if that makes any difference, and may use recycle b...

SAMBA digest 1565 - Netlogon problems
...omain controller (certainly, looking at the browse lists with smbclient showed this to be the case). The odd part was that it seemed to be crashed by the clients. A little (occasional use) server we have, a 486DX2/50, worked fine with a 486DX4/120 client machine. However, when we powered up a P166, the domain logons stopped working (for all clients). In short, upgrade to 1.9.18p1 and it should go away. (Well, it did for me. ;-) - Bob ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Plot => [(x, y) | x <- [0..width - 1], y <- [0..height - 1], x...

...dows 2000 pro as a server, for web hosting and such, but man like i said i've got issues running linux... correctly. Oh i need to say this before continuing, I do not know any REAL programming. I know HTML, and learning Java, but ya. Right now i've got mandrake 8.1 with the KDE GUI, on a p166 and it runs ok, but i'm wanting to do some of the same stuff on it, web hosting and all. Right now i'm trying to get samba up and running so i can share files between a windows 2000 pro and the linux box. They are directly connected through NICs, and the linux box is connected to the in...

Cipher 'none'
By making a one-line change it is possible to enable the cipher 'none' in openssh. But you still have to ask for it explicitly, either by adding it to /etc/ssh/ssh_config or by giving the '-c none' option to ssh. I think that this 'feature' should be turned back on, because for slow machines or large file transfers, using encryption slows things down a lot. This means

Access is denied
Hi, I have some users who sometimes can and cannot connect from PC to UNIX drive through SAMBA. The message is "Access is denied" and they tried to connect to different server and it is working. This makes the users think that the server is down. In fact the server is not down. Any one experiences this problem before? Please advise. regards, Bridget

VPN?
Once you have Samba shares up and running on the internal network, how do you go about making them available (browsable) via the Internet--a VPN? I hate to say it but in Windows 2k it's just a matter of a few clicks on the server and client. I'm hoping that it's not much harder with a Linux server/Windows client. Anything involving something like SSH will be too hard for most users.

Performance tests
I did some testing of vorbis codec (Winamp plugin) on a Pentium 166 MMX, and found that the performance is pretty good. I got 3 % cpu utisization if I turned dithering off, and 5 % otherwise. This was with a 138 kbit song. It's pretty long to mp3 performance that was 0 to 1 % on that machine for a 128 kbit song. Also vorbis seems to have a larger working set, because if I play two songs at

2 Questions
Hi, Just two quick questions: 1. Would it be possible or difficult to upgrade FreeBSD 4.8 -STABLE to 5.2 -STABLE when it comes out? 2. Which is the best for a production environment, -STABLE or -RELEASE Someone told me they think the latter is better because it doesn't require as much downtime for an upgrade. Thanks Joe
