Newbee here....
I would like to play around with Asterisk a little.
First, I need to prepare a server with FreeBSD.
It's a PII 433mHz/256mb box. Good enough?
Then install Asterisk.
I have a broadband (cable) internet presence.
Could I do anything with this connection and
Asterisk?
Thanks,

Problems with Self extracting zip files
...me at all
(500kb/sec). I would say it takes about 10 times as long to unzip when run
directly from the samba share. This happens will all self-extracting exe
files, and also from any share that I create. Any clues?
The samba server is running 1.9.17p4 on FreeBSD (486dx4), the client is
Win95b on a P133, and I have a very standard and basic smb.conf (sorry, I
couldn't send it right now). I'll send more details if anyone has any ideas.
Thanks,

I don't seem to have any other networking issues. I can scp large files

Any assistance would be appreciated. This is an old p133 that I'm

so I need to smbmount the tunes! :)

...configuration issues, and alternative options. I''ll cover
these in that order.
The consensus seems to be that a PPro, P2, alpha, or newer sparc could
do the job. The main concern seems to be in getting the fastest bus
possible. However, Bryan Davis seems to be having great luck using a
P133.

Slow Samba Printer initialisation, status, and printing
OK, I have been wrestling with this for two weeks now, so somebody please
help !
We have an existing Samba Print Server, running RedHat linux, kernel
2.2.19, that runs fine, but is a P133 with 64 mb ram. So we built a new PC,
the slowest thing we could buy, a duron 1 ghz with 512 mb RAM. Old printer
server is running Samba 2.2.5, new printer server is running samba 2.2.5,
and Slackware 8.1, kernel 2.4.18. Both are using lprng as print spooler.
Old is currently a WINS server, th...

administration will have to be done by community center personnel we are going

1) SWAT does not appear to add a Unix account when you try to add a Samba

impossible for a user to own files on the system without a UID it would make

[Bug 946] scp slow file transfers, even with -1 -c blowfish
...the sending machine is around 50%. In
transfering a 200MB movie (avi) I see the following stats:
$ scp 200MB-movie.avi foo at bar:/a/b
200MB-movie.avi 2% 4848KB 480.8KB/s 06:00
I see this with any destination machine on two different LANs: a Suse64 AMD64
with no load and a RAID5 array, a P133 FreeBSD box with no load and a single IDE
drive, and a Linux box with moderate load.
If I force scp to use ssh protocol version 1 and blowfish, I get better
performance but still far below wire speed:
$ scp -1 -c blowfish 200MB-movie.avi foo at bar:/a/b

wine serial support
...h a
"ticket" printer attached to a serial port.
The reason to go thru all this problem is that the printer has a proprietary, closed source driver
for windows only and interface only with netterm.
With wine 20001026 this works greatfull. The application takes 3 seconds to startup
in a P133 machine.
However, the serial communication part does not work with the later versions of wine
like 20010731. The application reports as if there is no serial port and wine complains
with some fixmes about comm support.
Did wine suffered a big serial change over the last year?
Now the importan...

How to get 3Ware 9500S controller card working in CentOS 3.1?
My goal is to be able to install to the drive array on the 3Ware
controller card. 3Ware does provide a RH WS 3 driver that I've tried to
use; however, the RH Enterprise 3 WS driver doesn't work since that
kernel is older than the CentOS-3.1 install kernel.
I'm trying to create a centOS-3.1 installation driver disk for the 3ware
9500S card; however, I'm not having much luck.

Current hardware requirements for decoding? (skipping problem)
The vorbis FAQ mentions that decoding vorbis should use roughly the same
resources as decoding MP3's, but that the current source is not optimized. So
what is the current requirement? I have a Pentium 133 with 64 megs and I
cannot get .ogg files to play without skipping. I've tried encoding .wav
files and downloading .ogg files from www.vorbis.com and playing them on

Best CentOS to install on *old* laptop?
I've found an old IBM OmniBook 800 and am curious whether I can get it
going again. (Currently it boots either Windows 95 or some
then-contemporary version of Slackware.) The CDROM is external (SCSI,
I think) and the machine won't boot from it, so it'd require a boot
floppy. Any suggestions? Or is CentOS entirely the wrong Linux to be
thinking about for this?

[OT] New (old) Firewall at shorewall.net
I''ve rebuilt my old P-II/233 with Debian Sarge and it is now serving as
my main firewall. It is running a home-built 2.6.9 kernel with the

Alternate winamp plugin.
Hello everyone,
I just thought that you should know that I was talking to someone the other
day and it seems that someone fairly close to Nullsoft has created his own
winamp plugin. I'm just suggesting this as an alternate plugin for those
that wish to try it. I had nothing to do with writing it so please don't
e-mail me about it. It's slightly more finished than the current winamp

Hardware advice please?
I am quite new to Linux and have moved (almost) from a windoze
NT4 environment.
My present configuration is running SuSE V 8.0 with KDE3.0.5
desktop on two machines, connecting with Samba to an NT4 PC,
and an occasional laptop or other PC that connects locally to the
network.
After a deal of searching, researching, and seeking advice I have
decided to use Shorewall as my firewall.
