OT -- What is with all the fragmented threads recently?
Is it my imagination or has there been a huge increase in the number
of fragmented threads in the last several days? Maybe it''s Gmail
doing something crazy, but I see dozens of top-level conversations
starting with replies (ex. "Re: [Rails] omfg something broke").
Did people collectively forget what the "reply" button looks like, or
is the list software doing something weird?

New to rails - scaffold command , how to get related items?
Ahoy,
I was able to follow the tutorials and build a simple to-do list program
with Items and Categories and have the related tables link up w/ the
default "scaffold :Items" command plus custom defenitions.
Then I erased all of that and tried rebuilding the program using the
ruby script/generate scaffold Item (and category) command.
Now the templates look like

OMFG, I've just looked at the tree starting at:
http://svn.xiph.org/trunk/oggdsf
which seems to contain complete (but out of date) source code trees for
annodex, ogg, cmml, dirac, flac, ogm, speex, theora and vorbis as well
as links to a bunch of SVN externals.
The whole catastrophe is over 190...

I don't believe anyone has yet implemented it.

I have now spent two days debugging C# on dotnot and all I can say
is OMFG!!!! The MS tools are completely fucking abysmal. Its the
most developer hostile environment I've ever worked on. The fact
that people are actually able to release software that sort of
works using these tools completely boggles my mind.

large dataset - confused
I'm trying to load a dataset into R, but I'm completely lost. This is
probably due mostly to the fact that I'm a complete R newb, but it's got me
stuck in a research project.
I've tried just opening the text file in WordPad and copying the data
directly into R, but it's too big and causes the program to crash.
Any suggestions or assistance? I'm kinda desperate and

frame/graphics lag in microsoft Freelancer
Huhu,
I installed MS Freelancer via PlayOnLinux, but I have some graphics lags ingame/the game was redicoulus slow, I also wasn't really able to start a new game since the game hang up (kinda. It just didn't wanted to finish loading)
One idea of me would be that it still runs in DX mode, how can I change it to OpenGL?
On a side note, I have enough ressources to run the game at windows.

Access denied when printing to Samba printers
Howdy all,
I'm setting up a print server machine to serve hosts in an Active
Directory domain. Debian GNU/Linux ("sarge", current testing branch),
Samba 3.0.0beta2-1.
Success so far:
- All steps in the current DIAGNOSIS document

- Sharing printer drivers from the [print$] share (yay!)
- Connecting to the

html special characters. h() failure.
I was trying to convert a some text with the (r) character it so it
replaced character \xAE with ®
h(@item.description) didn''t do anything. I need to use
@item.description.grep(/\xAE/,''®'') for it to work.
I think the h() function should be able to do all the codes that are
available.

Easiest way to get samba up and working for Windows users?
Everytime I have to setup samba to handle Windows users, sometime
inadvertently goes wrong or doesn''t work the way I expected, or takes
forever to setup, especially when there are many users and various policies.
So far, the easiest, sureest and quickest method appears to be install
WindowsXP into VMWare and use it to handle Windows sharing. Needless to say,
this strucks me as rather

Don't make cookie-stored sessions a default
Hi!
Before Rails 2.0 is coming, I suggest not to make CookieStore the
default session storage. It stores clear-text values on the client-side
and the integrity check hash can be brute-force attacked.
I understand that this has been set due to speed advantages, but I
believe it''s better to make better security a default.
I''ve written a blog post about this

Dynamically generating 10k pages per second
Hi,
Anyone got an idea of how many web and database servers I''d need to
push out 10,000 dynamic pages per second? Fairly simple pages and
database queries. I''d appreciate recommendations for hardware.
The clients for this project are anticipating large amounts of burst traffic.
