ruby on rails and Micro$oft environment support - IIS & ms sql
Hi everybody At work we''ve finally convinced the chief to develop some small project using open source technology. Unfortunately we are deeply involved with Micro$oft technology. That means, windows 2003 server, IIS, MS SQL 2005 and asp. I was thinking about recommending ruby on rails instead of asp, but I''d like to know how well it goes with IIS and MS SQL, because for the

Dovecot SASL vs. Micro$oft Outlook and Outlook Express
Hi, I have just started using Dovecot (1.0.10) SASL behind my Postfix (2.3.3). Everything works fine, as long as I send the SMTP AUTH command manually. When using M$ Outlook (2000 and 2003) and Outlook Express 6, authentification always fails. Turning on the Dovecot auth debug on reveals the reason: Dovecot SASL expects, in accordance with the standards, the following format of the SMTP AUTH

Oh oh. Micro$oft just noticed VoIP
It will be interesting to see how many standards get broken, and how many proprietary hooks get thrown into the pot. The bean counters smell some money, and their OS franchise is waning: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/26/technology/26soft.html -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

The Oft Maligned comment field, initial thoughts.
Hey all. Ok, so I'll stand up and be counted a newbie in this list too (just did the same for the General discussion list). I (once again) read through the archives, especially the ones concerning the comment field. First, I'm not a developer, per se. I'm merely an anal-retentive power user of such things, who likes to have my music archived, and sorted. In reading through the

Centos for Interested Children
Today, an enthusiastic 10 year old boy asked me about Linux. I thought of telling me to go to centos.org but then realised there is nothing on centos.org for complete beginners to Linux or for children. If anyone has the time, energy and interest, perhaps a basic technical introduction to the Centos version of Linux would be a good long-term objective. Let's catch the children's

failsafe against "stupid" / careless users
I'm admin on a samba PDC with 150 users, and as normal users they are quit "stupid". This means that they ofte deletes something that shouldnt have been deleted. And I find it anoying to restore their files from tapebackup. So would it be possible to get samba to "move" files instead of deleting them? This way I could allocate a disk to store deleted files for a periode of X days / weeks. If this...

Civ4 on Ubuntu doesn't work anymore after upgrade
Hi. I upgraded my Ubuntu installation to 10.04 this morning and now I can't make Civ4 work anymore (Beyond the Sword, patched 3.19, with last BUG mod). The application starts OK, but when I click "New Game", it crashes with this console message : wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x18868000 at address 0x7c3428fa (thread 0009), starting debugger... SQL Server 2005 and CentOS?
One of my clients use a software product that is "upgrading" and will shortly utilize micro$oft SQL server 2005. Currently the clients are XP on older machines with the database residing on a Samba / CentOS server and this works very well. Question: Does anyone run SQL server from XP in a virtualbox on CentOS? Any other configuration that works on a linux server? I do not want to have

HooDaHek 0.6 Released
HooDaHek 0.6 has been released. So soon, you say? Well, the best laid plans of mice and men... Steven BerkHolz is a pretty sharp stick and said to me, "Why don't you have HooDaHek change the CallerID when it looks up the name in the database on an incoming call?" Much head smacketh ensued, and as I made that change for Steven, I noticed that I had the way wrong version of

Eliminating 'Unprintable ASCII' characters
Hi all, I have a csv file containing words with *UNPRINTABLE ASCII* characters (described in the following table). Are there any viable method in eliminating these characters? I realise that *EXTENDED ASCII* characters (i.e , ¡, ¢, £, ¤ etc) can be removed or replaced via *"gsub"* or *"gregexpr"* functions. But am not certain with the *UNPRINTABLE ASCII* characters. Your

Samba for a Corporate File Server?
Hi guys, I'm been following samba for six or seven odd months now in preparation for moving our organisation over to a file server which is a little more cost effective than the Micro$oft alternative. We are currently running with about 30 users on a Windows 2000 Small Business Server. Do you see any problems in replacing this server with a linux box running Samba? Is the file

IP6 Anyone?
Today I received an allocation of IP6 addresses for some servers. I can 'play' with the last 2 of the 8 IP6 address segments. I always thought, mistakenly, IP6 was 6 segments, because it was IP6. IP4 had 4 segments. However IP6 is actually IP version 6 and it has 8 segments. The other interesting discovers are: :: means one or more 0 segments, example :: can mean 0:0:0: or just 0:0: or

Fwd: Response from Canon - MultiPASS (KMM7153196V60774L0KM)
My apologies for this because it is, technically, OT, but it is a classic example of what rotten support Linux (and CentOS) get in the US from equipment manufacturers. The whole email is a lie because they DO have the drivers on their asia site, they just don't want us 'Murkins to get our hands on them. Or maybe it's part of some clever little nuance of their agreement with Micro$oft

Lock Problem
We have some database dos programs runing under Linux with dosemu on the client side connected to Linux server runing samba, and want to do register locks in a local directory mounted with smbmount. In samba 2.0 this was not possible (files become corrupted). Can samba 2.2 do the trick?. We don't want to use micro$oft lan manager for DOS. Any other options?. Thanks in advance Pietro

I was on the "Check and fix DNS entries on DC joins" page of the wiki and discovered: root at tdc01:~# host -t CNAME a486dd66-59c8-411b-9c04-98f03d998226._msdcs.test.bob a486dd66-59c8-411b-9c04-98f03d998226._msdcs.test.bob is an alias for tdc01.test.bob. a486dd66-59c8-411b-9c04-98f03d998226._msdcs.test.bob is an alias for TDC02.test.bob. "Transparent" background in graphics exported as metafiles
Hi, Under Windows, I am exporting graphs from R (in metafile -emf- format), and want to combine them using a graphic package. It happens that the background of the graph is represented by a filled rectangle (with the color given by bg=...). This is to be expected. However, I find no options to disable this and produce a graph with transparent background. Does such an option exist? If not, then

Winbind-Cyrus-Outlook
I have been using Winbind for some time. We are now looking to use IMAP to replace Exchange. Currently we have configured Winbind to join our domain. Shares work fine and the ability to assign rights from the command line work fine for domain users is fine. The problem is that when outlook sends the user name and password to Winbind and PAM it bails out. When I see the users in Linux they
