...ed to clone from a RAC to a NON-RAC database using a cold backup of the RAC Instance.
On once occasion we used simple copy command (cp) to copy the files over to ext3 disk
On the second occasion we used ftp command in bin mode to ftp the files over to the destination node to ext3 disk.
On both occassions while creating the new control file on Target node, we got error stating the System file needs more recovery. ( Althoug we are 100% sure that on both occassions databases were shutdown normally for the backup)
On both above mentioned ocassions we were able to correct the problem using cp --o_dire...

Database schema question
...& associations.
Basically, my app is an occasion reminder service that emails users when
occasions that they select or input are coming up.
Occasions will be selected from a checkbox type list or alternatively
manually input by the user (name and date of the occasion).
Users can have_many occassions.
How would i set this up in my models? So far i have:
class Reminder < ActiveRecord::Base
attr_accessible :date, :name
belongs_to :user
end
class User < ActiveRecord::Base
attr_accessible :address, :birthday, :city, :email, :gender, :interests,
:name, :postal_code
has_many :remin...

Removing duplicates without a for loop
I have several thousand rows of shipment data imported into R as a data
frame, with two columns of particular interest, col 1 is the entry date, and
col 2 is the tracking number (colname is REQ.NR). Tracking numbers should be
unique but on occassion aren't because they get entered more than once. This
creates two or more rows of with the same tracking number but different
dates. I wrote a for

Comedian Mail not deleting .txt file
I have had two users on two separate systems indicate that they could
"not hear a new message"
When I investigate I find that the user has marked a message for
deletion. The .WAV .wav and gsm files are gone but the .txt file remains
thus giving asterisk and the user the impression that a new message
exists when it does not.
Has anyone else encountered this issue? Is there a fix?

[Off-topic] Battery Backed NVRAM for journals ...
I've seen this come up on occassion, but every NAS OEM that uses
NVRAM I've ever talked to over the last 18 months won't tell me
anything about their equipment nor their suppliers. Recently, Micro
Memory contacted me. Is anyone here using their products?
FYI, their 64-bit PCI 128MB-1GB NVRAM board is here:

SwitchTower and Subversion branches
...eed to fix something in a branch. Thus:
svn copy -r [release_date] file:///svn/db/trunk
file:///svn/db/branches/new_branch
svn checkout -r [release_date] file:///svn/db/new_branch
However, this would imply that I''d have to tell Switchtower to then
deploy from that new_branch for these occassions, which hardly seems
convenient. And, I''m simply afraid to deploy an unsuitable version by
accident.
I hope I''ve made myself somewhat clear on this confusing subject,

Grandstream hold one way audio -URGENT
...hat traffic is going from asterisk to
the receptionist phone, and vice versa.
I can predict when this is going to happen: when the receptionist places
the call on hold, the caller doesn't hear musiconhold. If the caller
does hear musiconhold then everythings goes well. Asterisk states in
both occassions that it is starting musiconhold, and again, with ngrep i
can see the RTP traffic going from asterisk to the caller and
vice-versa.
I'm thinking this is a problem with the Grandstream phones, but I'm not
sure. I upgraded to of the phones to firmware 1.0.1.12 today, and will

OT: Disable Polycom 650 Forward Softkey
I've got a problem that keeps popping up with my reception phone.
It is a IP 650 and the receptionist - on three occassions - has accidentally
hit the "Forward" softkey just before she enters the "Page All" keystrokes
and then all future calls get routed as an overhead page.
I will admit, the first time it happened, I was totally stumped. Why the
heck did I have customers yelling "Hello,...

selecting monotone pattern of missing data from a dataframe with mixed pattern of missingness
...t;- function(x) is.na(x) &
rev(cummax(!is.na(rev(x))) > 0)
good <- rep(TRUE, nrow(x))
for (j in seq(along = x)) {
good <- good & !isNonterminalNA(xo[, j, drop = TRUE])
}
xo[good, , drop = FALSE]
}
The function works well when the measurement occassions are just 3. When the measurement occassion becomes 4, I observed that pattern X X X NA is exclude, which is also a monotone pattern. Please how do i adjust a function like this to work in all cases. i.e to select only monotone patterns:
jhmonotone<-data.frame(
'id'=c(8,3,10,4,1),

confusion about what to expect?
In playing around with data.frames (and wanting a simple, cheap way to
use the variable and case names in plots; but I've solved that with
some hacks, yech), I noticed the following behavior with subsetting.
testdata <- data.frame(matrix(1:20,nrow=4,ncol=5))
names(testdata) ## expect labels, get them
names(testdata[2,]) ## expect labels, get them

I went back to read the manuals (installation guides), and I tried to install Hmisc again and made two attempts to install Hmisc. On both the occassions the laptop started rebooting when the list of "documentation filenames" output was at "somers2".

guest boot randomly fails to load sky2 kernel module? restart usually clears it up.
i''m running Xen Host & Guest, both version xen-4.1.2/64-bit.
i pass through an ethernet NIC from host to guest. it uses the standard
Marvell ''sky2'' kernel module.
when i start the guest, usually -- but not always -- the NIC gets
properly passed through and setup, and is completely usable.
if i shutdown & restart the Guest, sometimes -- maybe 20% of the time?

new laptop: DVD or Blu-ray
One of the build options for a laptop I'm looking at buying is DVD vs

reason, as a Linux guy, to want to get Blu-ray?

Three Identical systems - short cut to setting up the drives?
I am building three identical systems. Well they will have different
host names, and with time the software setups will drift. But at
install time they are identical.
Is there some way, (with dd I might guess) to do a hardare level copy?
All three drives are Hitachi DK23DA-40F (40Gb). Supposedly factory
reconditioned (they are in sealed bags with a drive sticker stating:
