difficulty saving pdfs
Often when I try "Save a copy" from a pdf viewer, I get a nyet, no such file as /tmp/s.../... . Making the indicated directory allows the save. What is the problem? Is it a gnome thing? Errors checking a library
Hi I am writing an R library. The documentation for one of my functions includes an example that I *know* works - simply cut and paste into R on either Windows and Linux and it works perfectly, no errors or warnings, nothing, nyet. However, when I run "R CMD check" on the library, I get an error. I am running R CMD check on linux, and the offending piece of code appears to be: cox[cox$group %in% onc,] "cox" is a data frame, one of the columns of which is group, which contains numbers. "onc"...

enp0s25 disconnect
I tried to boot a Centos 8.2 install CD, one burned with Centos-8-2-2004-x86_64-boot . In the setup, it persisted in telling me that ethernet thing enp0s25 was disconnected. Nyet. 'Twas working several seconds previous and is working now. This is a showstopper. How do I debug it? Also, whatever else it did, I now have environment variable HOSTNAME=2001-48F8-3004-2CE-1AE9-F1BF-8759-FF4C-dynamic.midco.net . It shows up on my terminal window headers and as part of the pro...

[semi-ot] Printing w/ NT, automated driver download and modifying printer settings
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Greetings, I've configured Samba for automated printer driver download by all Windows clients. However, I run into the following problem with NT4/2000/XP computers: Every user can connect to any printer and install the driver. (OK.) Only the printer admins can change hardware settings (f.ex. "Can it do duplex?"). (semi-OK.) BUT:

Problem with permissions
Hi all, this may be a very stupid question but I just don't really get it. We are two consultants from two different companies working for a custom er and are having a problem that we just can't solve, the other consultant is blaming samba and I want to prove him wrong. The thing we are looking at right now is that I have a chmoded 777 directory but in NT4 it appears with: Everyone

Local device name already in use
I'm seeing errors accessing samba shares accompanied by the message "The local device name is already in use" fairly frequently on several machines around our building. It doesn't seem to happen with NT shares. Our NT logon script executes a 'net use' command to map the Samba share as a network drive; is this just a symptom of a share already being manually mapped on

Automatic Printer Driver Downloading - Does it work?
Hi, I was wondering if anyone has gotten automatic printer driver downloading to work? The problem I'm seeing here is while trying to upload a printer driver to the Samba print server using Windows 2000 or XP. The Add Printer Driver Wizard runs ok until I click on the Finish button, then it requires a Windows 2000 Advanced Server CD-ROM to be installed, to get a driver out of the

...ored in a database, and I can access them via a web call. I have a few servers which should allow those users access. Some constraints to make it non-crazy. The users can only reverse tunnel. They need no state / home directories, etc. I've set the command in sshd_config to just echo "Nyet". All they do is try to connect with ssh -R *:0:localhost:<local-port> user at server -N (while I have you - is there any other way to know what port was allocated, except for parsing stderr?) NetBIOS problems in presence of audio stream?
At work I have been given the task of building and testing a Samba server. After several days of not being able to get the server to show up in Network Neighborhood, I think I have discovered the problem. The business uses an audio stream from Live365.com, apparently that is causing the other computers to not see the Samba server in Network Neighborhood. Pinging the server proves
