Help with archive bit request
Hello, I am trying to get the archive bit to behave under Samba 2.2.2 on a Linux box (Slackware 8.0) serving NT and Win2K clients. I have "map archive = yes" and "dos filemode = yes". If I have "force create mode = 0100", creating new files sets the archive bit (good) and "attrib +a filename" will turn on the archive bit if it was off (good) but

NT Backups
Given that rsync, smbclient and smbmount are all kissin' cousins, this seems like a good place to post this question. I'm building a linux backup server which will be archiving other linux and some NT servers. The Linux boxes are being rsynced over ssh, so everything is happy there. The NT servers were initially going to be smbmounted and rsynced, but this ended up hanging about 30%

The latest version of NovaNET (http://www.novastor.com/) claims in the release notes to support ACLs. I haven't put this to the test yet, though. (I use default ACLs extensively so unless I was restoring a whole tree, files tended to get the right ACLs automagically even under the old version.) I've been reasonably ha...

samba backup software
...finding a native linux solution since I don't see a lot of point in having to use a Windows server with a *nix client when I'm trying to get away from Windows. If you have suggestions or are using something you are happy with, please respond. Currently, I'm evaluating Novastor's Novanet 8.5. I know there are others that I can eval, I'm just interested in finding out what others are using and happy with. Thanks. Archive attribute
Our tape backup software (run through windows) backs up items based on whether the archive attribute is set or not. If it is set, then it needs to be backed up. Then it removes the attribute. When a user modifies a file, the attribute is again set. This is how it normally works. Samba will not allow the Archive Attribute to be unchecked. Is there anyway to allow this functionality. Samba

RE: follow-up: samba backup software
Follow up to my question for those also looking for backup solutions: Thanks for the input, it was helpful and gave me some leads. For What it's worth: I've been testing Novastor's Novanet 8.5. Pretty impressive. It has a nice GUI interface or a command line menu system, backups performed well, recognized my library without any extra effort on my part. Pricing isn't too bad either, especially compared to many of the other options. Granted I haven't donea really large backu...

...his fascinating subject. Ah yes, remote tape shares. It's a concept not worth pursuing because of shortcomings already elucidated by preposters, but also counterproductive in terms of low speed yield and potentially contentious chaos. > A quick search reveals this software to look at: > NovaNet (www.network-backup.com), Arkeia > (www.arkeia.com), NetVault Workgroup Edition > (www.bakbone.com), (Veritas BackupExec not > available for Linux,) anyone know of open-source, > multi-platform network-aware backup software? Automounting
Is there a way to make samba automatically mount a home directory? That is, a user logging in (from Linux), enters its username and password(Samba), and the system automatically mounts the user's home directory from the samba server(without asking the password again). Has anyone ever tried to do this? And succedeed :-) ? -- nneves@di.fc.ul.pt Dept. Informatica, Fac.
