NMDB not bound to 127.0.0.1
After updating Samba from 3.0.20 to 3.0.21c NMDB is only bound to my NIC's IP but no longer to 127.0.0.1 though my smb.conf parameters are interfaces = 127.0.0.1, 192.168.x.x/255.255.255.0 bind interfaces only = yes As a result SWAT does not show the status of NMDB any longer. Any idea which parameters are different to 3.0.20 or...

sharing port with nmdb
Hi, I'm a french student from Ecole des Mines of Nantes. Students of my engineering school live in a residence with its own local network, access to sun workstation at school for working and a Internet access througth a firewall. In each room of the residence, we have a RJ25 plug. We just need a network card and a computer to go on this network. As you can expected, our network is a jungle

workgroup name, small nmdb bug in 2.0.6
Im running 2.0.6 on solaris 7 on an ultra sparc and have discovered the following strange behavior: Samba was configured with --prefix=/usr/local/daemon/samba with this directory being a link. /usr/local/daemon/samba -> /localhost/daemon/samba-2.0.6 smbd and nmbd are looking for smb.conf in /usr/local/daemon/samba/lib and this is where the file is. Changes to smb.conf are noticed and acted

nmdb anomaly in SWAT
G'day, We are running Samba 2.04b on a Solaris 2.6 box as well as Samba 2.04b on a Solaris 7 box. In SWAT on the Solaris 7 box the nmbd service is seen to be running. On the Solaris 2.6 box SWAT says the nmbd service is not running. Doing a ps on the Solaris 2.6 box shows nmbd to be running. What is responsible for this anomaly? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Dave Lovett

Guide to porting to non-unix like systems?
...e we use at work. I'm fine with a minimalistic samba as this port would be for internal, single-developer use and not intended for file serving in general. Here are some things I'm wondering about, given the background: 1) Is fork() required, or could it be emulated via threads? 2) Could nmdb and smbd share a single process w.r.t 1) or is even possible to drop nmdb and just serve stuff slowly with a single smbd process? 3) Is Samba very tightly tied to the POSIX file/directory APIs? My intended target system has a rich I/O API (including async capabilities and various bells and whistle...

different browselists on multi homed server
Scenario: One Samba server with multiple network adapters each hooked to a different network. Question: How can I configure Samba (nmdb) to show different shares when browsing the Samba server from clients connected to the different networks? Background: The nmdb is always running in a single instance, doesn't matter how often it is started. Regards Richard

Hello I'm a biginner on samba and mailinglists. But I desperate need same help. After updating my samba 2.2.1a to 2.2.2 I can't logon to the domain again. hosts allow / hosts deny (CIDRs?)
...page is silent >> about CIDR notation. >> >> So, you know, I have to ask > >yes they do and you could have easily tried it out Well, actually, I *did* try it out. And it did *seem* to work, but what do I know? I also tried, but was unable to find where exactly the smbd/nmdb log records are being sent to, by default, on my FreeBSD system, and thus, I was unable to check properly to see if my addition of a line in my smb.conf file like "hosts allow = <<CIDR>>" did or did not cause a parse error, i.e. when I restarted the daemon. So, for all I can...

logon script won't start anymore after update 2.2.3a -> 2.2.8.a
...ere are 50 users with win2k-boxes attached - the samba server acting as PDC. Becauce of a swap of the old server I finally decided to update to 2.2.8a. What I did (in general): - installed the new server with suse 8.2 prof - Installed the suse-rpms for 2.2.8a on the new server. - shut down smdb/nmdb on the old server and changed ip and name - copied smb.conf, smbpasswd, secrets.tdb to the new server - added all the unix users - changed ip and name on the new server to the values of the old server - started smdb/nmdb on the new server Everything seemed to work. I could logon and got my samba-s...

installing Samba as non-root user at work - please help.
...f the linux box and correct port. But perhaps such a setup, even for my simple scenario, is not possible with Samba. Speaking of ports, I specify ports of 1445 and 1139 for smdb, since I cannot use a port below 1024 without having root access. Similarly, I attempt to use higher port when I start nmdb. I try to start both the smdb and nmdb daemons, but even that doesn't appear to work correctly, as it appears that a non-root, local install is not truly supported. At least not with more tinkering. >From my log.smbd: [2007/09/19 17:00:16, 0] smbd/server.c:main(944) smbd version 3.0.26...

WINS name resolution doesn't work
...on the firewall should be enough to make WINS work. I did this already. I tried to connect to a share on my PDC through a VPN connection. My VPN server properly sends the address of the WINS server, that's sure, I can see the correct address in the output of "ipconfig /all". smdb and nmdb are bound to the wildcard address to accept connections from ppp interfaces created on the fly. Everything seems to work correctly, but my clients cannot use NetBIOS names, when connecting to a share. Connecting to the server by its IP address works with no problem. I am creative, so I decided to d...

remote subnet browsing and NT4.0SP3
Hello, I have a samba 1.9.18p4 server running as a domain master browser on a subnet, with some clients distributed on other subnets. If there are only Win 95 clients on a subnet, browse sync works - but not if there are Win NT 4.0 SP3 machines on that subnet. Error from nmdb (at log level 3): sync_with_lmb: Initiating sync with local master browser MAILHEIDELBERG<0x20> at IP <deleted> for workgroup DIGIBILD 04/08/1998 14:51:48: sync_browse_lists: Sync browse lists with server MAILHEIDELBERG<20> at IP <deleted> for workgroup DIGIBILD Connecting...

"Secret is bad" -- Winbind with Samba 2.2.2 and Windows 2000 (native mode)
...verything is native mode). I then use the "smbpasswd -j DOM" command to join my domain. Even though it says it joined, I'm not convinced it's joining correctly since I get the "Secret is bad" message. I'm running on a Rehat 7.2 box with Samba 2.2.2. Daemons smdb, nmdb, and winbindd are all running. My ultimate goal is to login to my Redhat box with Windows usernames (like DOM+username) and passwords that are authenticated from my Windows 2000 domain controllers. Hence my use of Winbind, which seems written exactly for this purpose... Help!

samba not seen from wins server
I have Samba 2.2.8 running on Debian Woody for S390. I am trying to connect via the wins server list that is on a win 2000 wins server, but I don't see my linux server in the list. I can ping and search and find the server by name. I looked in the log.nmdb for messages, but the file is not being created. Samba requires ldap?

upgrading 3.0.4 to 3.0.13
I've searched using google and also look at samba.org and cannot seem to find any instructions on how to upgrade from a 3.x version to current. Everything out there is how to upgrade from a 2.x version. Do I just have to recompile and nothing else? Do I have to stop smbd and nmdb first or just restart them? Reboot?

Concurrent logon problem...
Hi you all, We are currently setting up a corporate wide file server using Samba 2.0.6 on a RedHat Linux Alpha platform. We only have Win98 clients, and the Samba server is doing net logons (no password encryption) and master browsing for the workgroup. The problem we have is that NMDB dies when a logon occurs with a username which is already logged. After that, Win98 freezes when you try to log off (until you restart NMDB), and nobody can log on any longer... We haven't made any test on the Intel platform, and thus, we have no idea whether it's a Samba problem or an Alp...

hosts allow / hosts deny (CIDRs?)
Just a trivial question... Do the hosts allow and hosts deny clauses (i.e. within smb.conf) support the use of IPv4 CIDR notation (e.g. A.B.C.D/maskbits) ? The specific documentation page I was looking at, i.e.: https://www.samba.org/samba/docs/using_samba/ch06.html was rather entirely ambiguous on this one small point. When describing the interfaces clause, it says explicitly that CIDRs
