IP to NetBIOS resolution
Hello,
Is there *any* way to reliablily determine the NetBIOS name of a computer
when you only know their IP address? I know it is very easy to find the IP
address from the NetBIOS name, but I can't seem to find any way of getting a
NetBIOS name from an IP..

netbios and interfaces
...nd eth2
server1 has eth2: 192.168.100.212 <--> 192.168.100.213 (another linux
server) with another interface 192.168.30.0/24
from network 192.168.30.0/24 I can ping 192.168.100.212 and works with
samba shares (but only using numeric IP)
I don't see any computers from windows machines.
nbtstat doesn't find any host (host not found)
nbtstat -a name_of_samba
host not found
nbtstat -A 192.168.100.212
Do I need to create a routing of broadcast address? or what?
Any idea?
thanks for help!
thanks!

nbtstat doesn't show MAC address for samba servers
On Win9x I issue the command:
nbtstat -a <netbios name>
If <netbios name> is a Win9x machine I got the MAC address of that
machine on the last line of the command output. If it's a samba server
the MAC address is not returned:
MAC Address = 00-00-00-00-00-00
Is there anyone who gest the MAC address back from a samba...

Samba/Windows XP and SSH tunnelling
...ba. I'm using a
Windows XP and a RedHat 8.0 box. I've closely followed the instructions from
the HOWTO manual in order to set this up to no avail.
I think the problem comes from the fact that my lmhosts file has no effect
on the NetBIOS name cache when I preload it with the command 'nbtstat -R'. I
checked the cache with 'nbtstat -c'.
This is what I have in my lmhosts file:
127.0.0.1 SAMBASERVER #PRE
If I change the IP to something other than 127.0.0.1 then it appears in the
NetBIOS cache.
I get the following error message when I run the command 'net view

mount -t smbfs -o username=administrador,password=123 //winbox/pub

but what I want to do is to access files that I have in the linux

I'd do that using "net use K: \\linuxbox\first" but it doesn't work
command nbtstat -A 192.168.0.1 returns host not found but ping winbox
pings 192.168.0.1 ok
the command nbtstat -A 192.168.0.30 returns the shared resources on the
Win XP machine ok and viceversa
bellow it is my smb.conf. I've made it as simple as possible

Samba over VPN
...e server originally existed inside the network (10.1.1.0/24) but now
exists on 10.10.12.0/24. I can access shares over the VPN to the domain
controller, but when I try to log in as a domain user it says the domain
is unavailable.
I added the domain controller as a WINS server on the 2003 server.
nbtstat -c on the 2003 does list the domain controller and the domain.

- "smbclient -L fizzle" is able to list shares, as well as connect to a

- "nmblookup -U 127.0.0.1 __SAMBA__" works fine, as does the same

- "nbtstat -n" on XP lists both STUDIO and FIZZLE

can by number. By this I mean:
On a Linux desktop,

all work as expected, but

Connection issues between Win98 & Samba 2.2.2
...The Win2k servers on the same subnet sometime can connect and sometime
can't. (50-50)
Using Net View \\IP <file:///\\IP> or Net View \\hostname
<file:///\\hostname> sometime show the share and sometime timeout.
Tried using Lmhosts.
All Win98s are not able to connect. But nbtstat -A IP can work
The "A" Win2k server (not on the same subnet) is able to connect most of
the time, using WINS or Lmhosts. But sometime only via IP and sometime
both, using net view \\IP <file:///\\IP> or \\NetBios
<file:///\\NetBios> Name to test.

WinME can't log immediately after restart (Samba as PDC).
...ning WinME (I'm not to blame, they were there when I
arrived).
I've followed step by step the HOW-TO in setting up Samba as a PDC
and a WINS server, but when I reboot one of the WinMEs I can't log on to
the domain immediately. I have to hit [Esc], enter MS-DOS and do
c:\> nbtstat -R
c:\> nbtstat -RR
and close the no user session. After that if I'm lucky I can log on. If
not lucky, I do it again and after the third time or so I get to log on.
I did
# tail -f samba.nmbd
and I got this in the samba.nmbd when trying to log on and get rejected:

- I have replaced the switch between the computers with an old 10 mbit/s
hub, no change
- There are no firewall configurations or packet filters on the linux

Now to the interesting part. When playing around with 'nbtstat' in
Windows 2000, i found out that the windows computer fails to resolve the
name of the samba server after it has locked up. After a couple of
minutes, the name resolving starts working again. The network seems to
be in two states, one broken (where windows can not find the share or

new samba install
...rning i am back up just fine on my old samba server which is identical
accept for a different workgroup, netbiosname, and processor.
meanwhile, we set an test environment isolated from
the other network -- just the server, the testing
windows box and a switch -- and we still see the same
symptoms. nbtstat -n shows duplicate records in the
netbois, which we can't figure out how to remove. we
did nbtstat -R and nbtstat -RR to no avail.
any ideas? I also still am going to have the windows explorer crash, i did try
use sendfile = no before all the rest.
thanks
