Browsing in AD networks
...can click on "Browse Active Directory", search for computers and then I can see them, but I don't think this is how it should be. Even after enabling network discovery, I only get an incomplete list of 4 workstations on the network, which does not include the server. I could see with nbstat that one of the shown workstations has now registered the __msbrowse__ name. But I also learned that samba doesn't support browsing/nmbd on a DC. How do I get the list back? Thanks, Andreas

xp clients can't auth after reboot without smb restart
I currently have several fresh installs of XP that will connect to shares, but will not reconnect after a workstation reboot. These are workstations that are not joined to the domain. Only accessing shares from a local profile, but using the same user/pass to login as to connect to Samba. I get various errors at that point. Upon reboot, attempting to access the share generates: "An error

W2K Server and Workstation can't join SMB/LDAP domain
...un an nbtstat that shows the domain name listed and its resolving to the correct IP address. In fact I turned off the BDC for a while so that there would only be one DC in the mix in case my config was wrong. The W2K machines showed the domain with the PDC IP address. When I turned the BDC back on nbstat showed the domain name resolving to the BDC ip address which is what I would expect would happen. I've tried adding the workstation accounts manually using smbldap-useradd -w . The machine name correctly appears when I do a ldapsearch -x -b however using getent group does not show the machine...

Samba BDC does not register in WINS as BDC
...H <ACTIVE> MYDOMAIN <00> - <GROUP> H <ACTIVE> MYDOMAIN <1e> - <GROUP> H <ACTIVE> MAC Address = 00-00-00-00-00-00 As expected, the PDC shows up a domain controller and the primary domain controller ("<1b>.") Nbstat under XP gives similar results. The samba how-to documentation indicates that XP clients should choose a bdc in preference to the pdc, which they never do. Presumably if I shut down my PDC, XP clients will not be able to login to the network. I am not sure whether wins.tdb is generated fr...

Problem of access samba from rh8
Hello, I already setup a samba server as PDC for windows client to logon and working fine now with the following config: - redhat 7.3 - samba 2.2.7a Then I try to access the samba share from Redhat 8, I can use smbclient to access the share without problem but I can't access the share with "KDE's Konqueror" (smb://NetbiosName/), it can show all shares, when I double one of

...stion in about 0.1 seconds. When the network is broken, I get "Host not found" after a short timeout (perhaps 3 seconds). Looking at the network activity in ethereal when issuing the nbtstat command I find that in broken state the server doesn't answer to the "NBNS Name query NBSTAT ULYSSES<00>" packet. The client sends 3 packets to the server but none gets answered. Samba doesn't print a single line in the logfiles at log level = 10 as a response to the recieved packets on UDP/137. This leaves me with two alternatives. 1) nmbd gets the packet but drops it...

WINS names intermittently unregister after 5 days
Hi, (I posted this question about 6 months ago and never really got anywhere with it so I thought I'd try again.) We're using Samba as a WINS server. Windows servers appear to correctly register themselves and I can look them up e.g. with nmblookup. However some servers lose their registration after 5 days. And it's the same servers, about 4 (of about 25 servers and 200

A possible error in the way nmbd fails to respond to certain request packets
...nt across the network when I queried TESTSERVER from both its local console and from the Win98 box. From the local console the results were:- Src=192.168.1.50 Dst=192.168.1.255 (broadcast) Name Query NB TESTSERVER<00> followed by a response, then Src=192.168.1.50 Dst=192.168.1.50 Name Query NBSTAT TESTSERVER<00> followed by a response. Everything as I expected to see it. However, from the Win98 box I just got three request packets, spaced about a second apart, but no response. A quick check from the console of TESTSERVER showed that nmbd had bound itself to the network correctly:-...

Workgroup/Domain Browsing
I am currently running samba on a Redhat 8.0 server, and it is working great. Keep up the good work guys! My question involves a VPN connection to the server on a different network segment. I have the following setup: Internal Network - 192.168.13.0/24 | | Red Hat Samba Server - 192.168.13.3 - aip-ky | VPN |

Installing shared Windoze executables on a Samba share (fwd)
Hi, I've got a Samba server here that runs great! I've got an NT machine on my laptop and I can interface with the Samba server directly in any way I want, except for one thing: When I try to install a program (Visio) as a network shared app, the installation always tells me "I've determined that the target drive doesn't support long file names" after I choose to

simple cross-network browsing setup is failing
...Host ZAYIN can access shares on BETH and VAV, via, e.g., "net view \\vav". (Naturally, access via IP address also works.) ZAYIN is correctly querying its WINS server (BETH) to obtain the IP address of the server (verified in nmbd.log and by inspecting ZAYIN's netbios cache with "nbstat -c"). Host BETH can access shares on VAV and ZAYIN, via, e.g., "smbclient -L vav -U user". (Naturally, access via IP address also works.) Host ZAYIN recognizes that BETH is the Primary Domain Controller for TRANSFINITES. Everything I have read indicates that to Windows machines,...

Samba Problems
I have a couple of problems with Samba that I would appreciate help with: 1. Since installing version 1.9.17p1, error messages such as "ERROR: set_share_mode: failed to ftruncate share mode file /var/smb/locks/share.9175085.1500224 to size 42 (Permission denied)" are appearing in log.smb. 2. When a directory on a UNIX machine contains a file named *, this file appears with the name ~16
