I have a couple of problems with Samba that I would appreciate help with: 1. Since installing version 1.9.17p1, error messages such as "ERROR: set_share_mode: failed to ftruncate share mode file /var/smb/locks/share.9175085.1500224 to size 42 (Permission denied)" are appearing in log.smb. 2. When a directory on a UNIX machine contains a file named *, this file appears with the name ~16 in Windows Explorer. If this file is deleted using Windows Explorer, all the files in the directory on the UNIX machine are deleted. I'm curious; why on earth would anyone/anything create a file called '*'? I've seen this question before, but I've not figured out if people are trying to bulletproof a system, or if they actually get files called '*'?>From DOS (Win-whatever) if you 'del *', only files without a '.' in themwould be removed, so it sounds to me like Samba is expanding the wildcard, not DOS. If this is the case, would one need to be concerned with other wilcard characters? Would a file called '`ls -d /`*' remove all of the files in the root? I've no idea why anyone would want to create a file called * either; one of our developers 'discovered' this problem. Other wildcard characters can also cause problems; if a directory on the UNIX machine contains files named test1, test2 and test?, deleting the file test? using Windows Explorer causes the 3 files to be deleted. I have installed Samba on my FreeBSD system, it starts fine, but I'm unable to see it from my windows machines. I'm unable to see the system at all, if I try to map a drive to it I get an error message in the log.smb file that says: smbd/oplock.c:open_oplock_ipc(92) open_opllock_ipc: Failed to get local UDP socket for address 100007f. Error was Can't assign requested address. Any help with getting this fixed would be greatly appreciated. Hello Juliano, Looks like you have security=domain or server set up in your smb.conf file, and it is expecting to find the SID file for your samba installation directly under the /etc directory. Typically you would expect to find this under /usr/local/samba/private subdirectory... although that is configurable at compile time as well as via an smb.conf parameter (it's kept in the same directory as the smbpasswd file, typically). where is your smb.conf file located? You might want to post that, as well as how you are starting smbd. How long had samba been up and running since you last started it? Also, if you removed and reinstalled samba, then you are going to need to check you smb.conf file to make sure your configuration parameters are as you expect; and if you have security = domain, you will need to follow the steps again to rejoin the domain using the smbpasswd -j option. Hope this helps, DOn -----Original Message----- From: Juliano Sanches [mailto:jsanches@galvani.ind.br] Sent: Wednesday, February 21, 2001 3:22 PM To: samba@samba.org Subject: Samba Problems My friends I have a problem im my samba server, simply he stopped working. Hi,
I installed samba-2.0.10-2 in my RH 7.1 and want to share linux drivers
and windows 2000 drivers.
I have several questions to ask:
1. When I access linux drivers from windows 2000, if I use command line
or emacs, the speed is OK. However, when I use MS products, e.g. notepad,
it is very slow when I clicked on "Look in" drop down menu in open
dialog
for the first time. It becomes normal when I do it after that if I do not close
this program. I understand it is slow when I map network driver but is it
supposed
to be like this for notepad? Or does my configurations have some
problems?
2. When I access win2K driver from my linux box, the whole system hanged
twice in one day(I had to reset the computer). I am afraid to do that
again. Did anyone have the similar experience?
3. I also tried to update to samba.2.2.2 using the RPM mentioned in this
list. However, There are too many dependencies, samba--> samba-common -->
readline.so --< .... It seems there is no way to install samba.2.2.2
untill I upgrade all the RPMs dependent on readline.so. Am I right?
Thanks a lot. I attach my smb.conf as below.

Hi all! I just installed Samba and am trying to get a NT pc to connect. Being new to this application and wondering if anyone can help! at the pc I enter: net use x: \\server\tmp --> response: The password is invalid for \\server\tmp Type the password for \\system\tmp: xxxx --> response: System error 1240 has occurred. --> response: The account is not authorized to login from this station. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!! john dziegiel
The response: The account is not authorized to login from this station Is what I was getting on my Win2K machine. This group suggested that I add: encrypt passwords = yes to my smb.conf file, also run 'smbpasswd' on the Samba machine., (see the smbpasswd man page) Then your user connecting from NT must have the same name and password as he/she has on the Samba machine. It worked for me! Unfortunately I can't seem to be able to get it to work from both Win2k AND Win95 at the same time. Brian W. Mr. Lewis Excuse me, I write from Mexico I have a question and could yoy help me, please??: I have a samba (v .2.2.0) installed on sun unix server with solaris 7 called dico_samba (IP address 200.20.301.20; for example). And other server with Samba (v. 1.9.17p3). My clients are: computers with Win95 and Win2000. The problems are: 1) With Samba v. 1.9.17p3 and Win2000 client , ran the fix in the register: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkStation\Parameters] "EnablePlainTextPassword"=dword:00000001 This tip works, I can connect my Win200 clients with Server IP adress , but I don?t with Server Name, I checked my dns and other name configuration of my Win200 client and works with other applications very well, the problem is Samba because I only can connect thought the IP addrees. What?s the conflict??? 2) With Samba 2.2.0 Win2000 Client: The same case of point 1, I can connect throught IP address of Server, but don?t with Server Name Win95 client: when I try to connect with Server , Windows displays the error: "The password is incorrect, try again", and it doesn?t permit me to access the share resource in Server. However in Unix , I try to connect with smbclient command to share resource and it?s succesfully, inclusively from others Unix Servers. What's the problem?? why Unix yes and Windows No?? With Samba v. 1.9.17p3, my Win95 clients connect very well, with Server Name, no problems, but with Samba 2.2.0 is a disaster I read the DIAGNOSIS.txt , but I d?nt found the solution Excuse for my questions and I hope that you can give some ideas about this Thanks a lot Marco -------------- next part -------------- HTML attachment scrubbed and removed
Samba v2.2.5-8 using source rpms from Redhat rawhide, compiled for i686 target, RedHat Linux 7.3 kernel version 2.4.18-10. Two issues: 1. I am seeing in my /var/log/messages logs this: Aug 26 16:01:01 linux kernel: smb_request: result -104, setting invalid Aug 26 16:01:02 linux kernel: smb_retry: successful, new pid=707, generation=3 Aug 26 16:01:02 linux kernel: smb_request: result -104, setting invalid Aug 26 16:01:03 linux kernel: smb_retry: successful, new pid=711, generation=3 Aug 26 17:01:02 linux kernel: smb_request: result -104, setting invalid Aug 26 17:01:02 linux kernel: smb_retry: successful, new pid=707, generation=4 Aug 26 17:01:02 linux kernel: smb_request: result -104, setting invalid Aug 26 17:01:03 linux kernel: smb_retry: successful, new pid=711, generation=4 Aug 26 18:01:03 linux kernel: smb_request: result -104, setting invalid Aug 26 18:01:03 linux kernel: smb_retry: successful, new pid=707, generation=5 Aug 26 18:01:03 linux kernel: smb_request: result -104, setting invalid Aug 26 18:01:04 linux kernel: smb_retry: successful, new pid=711, generation=5 Aug 26 19:01:00 linux kernel: smb_request: result -104, setting invalid Aug 26 19:01:01 linux kernel: smb_retry: successful, new pid=707, generation=6 Aug 26 19:01:01 linux kernel: smb_request: result -104, setting invalid Aug 26 19:01:02 linux kernel: smb_retry: successful, new pid=711, generation=6 Notice that this is happening every hour. What is this? What does it need that I am not providing it? I tried looking everywhere on the 'Net for "-104" and couldn't find anything. I've also had KDE lock up on me hard right after one of these, and I can't be sure that Samba isn't implicated in that. Also, this may be related: 2. I set my Win 2k settings Lan Manager Authentication to be "Send NTLMv2 response only/refuse LM & NTLM" and Samba fails to mount the disk on Linux. Also, there are about 600 smb processes started with everything else failing with messages like "too many open files", etc... I believe that this is what was causing me to lock up. Any ideas about these issues? Is anybody else seeing this?
Hope you can help as I appear to be going in circles. Have setup a small peer to peer network Linux (Mandrake 8.2) Home1 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 Win XP Home2 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0 Workgroup Test Now can ping both hostnames and ip addresses from both directions (although WinXP refuses to reply to itself). Have managed to connect to SAMBA for both Home1 & Home2 from the linux box. Used DIR and saw all files in directories. Used my username login for Linux share and guest login for XP box. I think all my problems are coming from the windows XP area. Have tried the nbstat -A 192.168.1.1 but receive Host Not Found. tried mapping to Linux box but didn't manage to connect. Tried a number of different ways but no joy. tried mapping \\Home1\public & \\192.168.1.1\public but think the problem could lie with the login name and password. When you choose map as different user how should it read? Home1\dean, dean, \\Home1\dean? Also using the SAMBA distribution which comes with Mandrake and I don't appear to have the command nmblookup. Any guess's? Any tips for progressing would be gratefully recieved. Cheers Dean -------------- next part -------------- HTML attachment scrubbed and removed
Hi!
I tried to set up a Samba PDC but so far it is not yet working (3 weeks passed).
I posted my Samba problems to news groups and discussion forums, but the
suggestions given were not able to solve my problems. I went through a few
HOWTOs and followed the step-by-step guide, still can not solve my problem. I
am realy new to Linux and Samba and hope sameone will guide me through.
(1) What I did: -
(a) I installed the samba samba-swat, samba-common, samba-client, and
edited /etc/samba/smb.conf files as following: -
# Samba config file created using SWAT
# from chee_ch.com (127.0.0.1)
# Date : 2002/10/26
# Global parmeters

(b) I added the Samba user Peter and Secretary: -
#useradd -m Peter
#passwd Peter
.....
#cat /etc/passwd | /usr/bin/mksmbpasswd.sh > /etc/samba/smbpasswd
#smbpasswd Peter
.....
(c) I repeated the steps to create account for Secretary.
(d) I added root passward to the Samba
#smbpasswd -a root
......
(e) I did
#groupadd -g 200 admins
#groupadd -g 201 machines
#mkdir -m 0775 /home/netlogon
#chown root.admins /home/netlogon
#mkdir /home/samba /home/samba/profiles
#chmod 1757 /home/samba/profiles
(f) At the Windows 98 client I change to Client for Microsoft Networks,
Primary Network Logon, Logon to NT Domain.
(g) I copied AutoCAD files to /home/Peter/tmp/ and /home/Secretary/tmp/
(2) What happened
I re-booted the Samba PDC and Samba started fine. From the Network
Neighborhood of window client (Peter and Secretary) I can see CH LINUX SER. I
double
clicked it I can see CH-HOMES (netbios name). I double clicked CH-HOMES,
it prompted for passwd, I enter and I went in CH-HOMES. But, it is an
***empty***
folder. I supposted be able to see to Peter and Secretary folders. And
and in Peter and Secretary I supposted be able to see tmp .......
I rechecked the smb.conf file many, many times to ensure no spelling error
etc, nothing worked out. In the CH-HOMES folder of window client, it is still
an empty
folder.
(3) What I like to see
A Samba PDC serving 10 over window clients, each window client login to
their respective /home diectory.
What has happened?! I am new to Linux and Samba, and help will be greatly
appreciated.
Thank you
Oswald

Thank you for your helps. After I corrected all the spellings and did chown -R
Secretary /home/Secretary
chmod -R 700 /home/Secretary ... I double clicked the LINUXSERV at the Secretary
window
client, it did not prompt me for password instead went right to the CH-HOMES
folder.
When I double clicked the CH-HOMES, again it is an ***empty*** folder. I
supposed to see Peter
and Secretary folder in the CH-HOMES folder.

suggestions given were not able to solve my problems. I went through a few
HOWTOs and followed the step-by-step guide, still can not solve my problem. I
am realy new to Linux and Samba and hope sameone will guide me through.
(1) What I did: -
(a) I installed the samba samba-swat, samba-common, samba-client, and
edited /etc/samba/smb.conf files as following: -
# Samba config file created using SWAT
# from chee_ch.com (127.0.0.1)
# Date : 2002/10/26
# Global parmeters
[global]
;Basic server setting 3/11/2002

8192
;PDC and master browser setting

samba passwd file = /etc/samba/ambpasswd

passwd chat = *New*passward* %n\n*

add user script = /usr/sbin/useradd -d /dev/null -g machines -c 'Mechine

read only = yes
browseable = no
write list = @admins
[printers]
comment = All printer
path = /var/spool/samba
printeble = Yes
brawsable = No
(b) I added the Samba user Peter and Secretary: -
#useradd -m Peter
#passwd Peter
.....
#cat /etc/passwd | /usr/bin/mksmbpasswd.sh > /etc/samba/smbpasswd
#smbpasswd Peter
.....
(c) I repeated the steps to create account for Secretary.
(d) I added root passward to the Samba
#smbpasswd -a root
......
(e) I did
#groupadd -g 200 admins
#groupadd -g 201 machines
#mkdir -m 0775 /home/netlogon
#chown root.admins /home/netlogon
#mkdir /home/samba /home/samba/profiles
#chmod 1757 /home/samba/profiles
(f) At the Windows 98 client I change to Client for Microsoft Networks,
Primary Network Logon, Logon to NT Domain.
(g) I copied AutoCAD files to /home/Peter/tmp/ and /home/Secretary/tmp/
(2) What happened
I re-booted the Samba PDC and Samba started fine. From the Network
Neighborhood of window client (Peter and Secretary) I can see CH LINUX SER. I
double
clicked it I can see CH-HOMES (netbios name). I double clicked CH-HOMES,
it prompted for passwd, I enter and I went in CH-HOMES. But, it is an
***empty***
folder. I supposted be able to see to Peter and Secretary folders. And
and in Peter and Secretary I supposted be able to see tmp .......
I rechecked the smb.conf file many, many times to ensure no spelling error
etc, nothing worked out. In the CH-HOMES folder of window client, it is still
an empty
folder.
(3) What I like to see
A Samba PDC serving 10 over window clients, each window client login to
their respective /home diectory.
What has happened?! I am new to Linux and Samba, and help will be greatly
appreciated.
Thank you
Oswald

I'm trying the latest versions of Samba on a LRP box (kernel 2.2.19), namely
versions 2.2.7a and 2.2.8, but whenever I try to access a share it fails and
the smbd log has the following error message:
build_sam_account: smbpasswd database is corrupt! username smb1 not in
unix passwd database!
I have the user accounts defined in the smbpasswd file and in /etc/passwd.
When using an older version (2.0.4b) I have no problems at all. Also, when
trying to change a Samba password using smbpasswd I get a similar error message:
build_sam_account: smbpasswd database is corrupt! username smb1 not in unix
passwd database!
Failed to find entry for user smb1.
Failed to modify password entry for user smb1
I configured it during the build to use the traditional smbpasswd file. Does
anybody know what this is?.
Another issue is that nmbd won't start up if I have "interfaces =
all"
specified in the global section of smb.conf, which again wasn't a problem
with
the older version.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Tried your suggestions but same problems on LRP. Trying the 2.2.8 smbpasswd on my SuSE box worked fine. Go figure.> On Sun, 16 Mar 2003, Spiro Philopoulos wrote: > > > Thanks for responding. Umm.. I think i should make one thing clear because I'm getting alot of replies saying I should do smbpasswd -a username. I just want to let you guys know that I have done this, I added the users I was testing out, ie. fred, root. this is not the problem. Also I'm using a newly installed version of redhat 8.0 and trying to make it work with samba2.2.8 Thanks for all your help so far _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus
