Director questions
...ne related to the other: 1) Is there an effective maximum of directors that shouldn't be exceeded? That is, even if technically possible, that I shouldn't go over? Since we're 100% NFS, we've scaled servers horizontally quite a bit. At this point, we've got servers operating as MTAs, servers doing IMAP/POP directly, and servers separately doing IMAP/POP as webmail backends. Works just dandy for our existing setup. But to director-ize all of them, I'm looking at a director ring of maybe 75-85 servers, which is a bit unnerving, since I don't know if the ring will be able...

handling spam from gmail.
...further write: > For example: Postfix supports both before-queue filters and after-queue filters. Milter-regex[1] supports both multi-header and body checks. Of course, and there is nothing wrong with it. It just runs into the issue I tried to describe: incomplete SMTP implementations from MTAs. Pre-queue filtering happens, before the mail was accepted to be queued. So a before-queue milter can trigger an 5xx status code to reject the mail. This code can be sent in response to steps 2, 3 or 4. According to the smtp specs. But for many years it was code of practice to send error/rejec...

rpm requires logic
Exists the possibility to define an RPM requires statement with a logic? Like: Requires: mysql-server OR mysql55-mysql-server MTAs like postfix have "Provides: MTA" to provide such facility. I do not see such possibility for DB packages ... Thanks -- LF

POP3 Performance
...perfomed a lot of migration throught mbox email software to Maildir with dovecot) but i can see that the performance is very poor and receive complaint about delays of autentications of accounts. The solution lives in Metrocluster Netapp storage, filesystem NFS, VMware as a virtualization (the mtas are a virtual machines lives in netapp too) about 4T of data mails and a 10G network connection (betwen mtas and nfs storage) All account information work in LDAP plataform (two servers in replicated mode, no high average or delays detected in this servers) When the traffic have a peak of 180...

Probelm with some smtp MTAs
I am getting large numbers of these types of messages in my maillog files: somehost.hotmail.com [65.54.246.97] did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA on both of our external machines beginning on the same date. These hosts sit on different netblocks and on both machines the sendmail.cf files date from Jan 09, 2007. The last successfull connection from any hotmail acocunt

Mail server setup for small ISP
...ld dovecot be sufficient, or should I try cyrus. I'd rather use components that are available for base or extras repository (or rpmforge). I think that squirrelmail and horde would do a good job for webmail. There shoudn't be any troubles having some redundancy for DNS, web servers, mtas, but what about IMAP/POP? linux-HA? MySQL replication should be enough, I guess. Or maybe linux-HA as well. I wonder if I should add GFS to the mix to have multiple IMAP/POP servers use the same storage. Or maybe IMAP proxies? Any insights welcome :). Ugo

Downloading e-mail from a master mail server
...underbird clients, but I have not figured out yet how to automatically backup all mailboxes. See this question of mine: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1243605 So I am trying to design a solution with Dovecot, but I know too little about mail servers. How could I configure Dovecot / MTAs / whatever in order to achieve the "Leave a copy on server" together with "For at most xx days" mentioned above? This way, Dovecot does not need to be exposed on the Internet. Failing that, could someone tell me at least how to configure Dovecot / whatever to download the e...

Delivering locally through the Submission Server
Hi all: I am learning Dovecot step by step. I have enabled the Submission Server, in the hope that I would not need to learn other MTAs like Postfix. The Submission Server is very comfortable: it picks up the existing Dovecot configuration, so that you do not need to configure any user authentication separately. It is working fine on my test setup. My first thought was that, if the recipient is a local mailbox, the Submission Se...

handling spam from gmail.
...dy content... There exists one problem: at this stage of mail reception you have no body content nor header information on which a milter may perform deeper analysis, only envelope data. The SMTP specs itself allow failure codes after any command, even a 5xx after the DATA command. Hoever, many MTAs still ignore error response codes after DATA and take the mail as sent, so that most mail servers will perform any error indication before DATA, at latest after RCPT TO. So the server has to accept mail first before it can scan its header and/or body, and would send out DSNs on rejection at th...

The max length is 998 "characters". I suspect that your MUA or more likely procmail is where the truncation is taking place. I just did: /bin/mailx -s"... 200+ character subject ......

HTML Posts
...ome list subscribers post in HTML. In this regard, the Shorewall list seems unique -- most lists that I subscribe to flame HTML posters unmercifully whereas this list is unusually tolerent. While the list server here at shorewall.net accepts and distributes these HTML posts, a growing number of MTAs serving list subscribers are rejecting this HTML list traffic. At least one MTA has gone so far as to blacklist shorewall.net "for continuous abuse"!! I think that blocking all HTML is a rather draconian way to control spam and that the unltimate loser here is not the spammers but the...
