uid/gid mapping when using AD backend
...and
the Official Samba-3 reference to get my first server running,
authenticating users to my AD domain, and mapping uid/gid using idmaps
through winbind. My problem is that, when I setup a second member server,
its idmaps aren't guaranteed to be identical to the first server. I know the
books mentin using ldap backends when I'm using a samba PDC, but what about
when I'm using AD servers for my backend?
Should I force Samba to use ldap to access AD instead of winbind? Does
Services For Unix (SFU) extend my AD schema (Win2003) to support uid/gids
that can be accessed by winbind? Should...

One thing woth of mentining is that CFLAGS have been '-mtune=ev6' for all
the packages, that does obey normal rpmbuild process. I am not sure
what the impact is in real life, but IMO it won't make a really slow
hardware any _slower_ and might even a little faster for anything
useable (no pun intended. 'usea...

IAX2 hard phone
I purchased an IAX2 hardphone, X100 otherwise known as a Netweb X100 or
YWH100 with a PA168 chip and the latest firmware 1.45 available, from a
US retailer. I was able to configure the phone to work with my Asterisk
box, except the hold and transfer buttons do not work. When you press
the hold button, it rings endlessly, the transfer button, displays
"transferring" but it does nothing.

Automating cupsaddsmb or some alternative
I am developing a print server for a client, and I need to make the ability
to add and configure print servers as simple as possible. So far, cups and
samba are top notch, but there are two problems I have.
One, I need to restart the samba service every time I add a printer.
Two, I need to log in via console or SSH to run cupsaddsmb, and I need to
then authenticate.
I was wondering if there was

becoming root
Hi List,
I've just drafted a FAQ/mini-HOWTO on becoming root as this is a topic I
see come up time and time again.
Perhaps someone with a reasonable understanding could check it for
technical correctness, and if anyone would like to offer comments/feedback??
Any suggestions as to where might be an appropriate home for this on the
Wiki?
Regards,
Ned

[RFC] Add IR level interprocedural outliner for code size.
Hi River,
Thanks for the detailed explanation.
If people are okay for you to move forward, like I said to Andrey, I won’t oppose. I feel sad we have to split our effort on outlining technology, but I certainly don’t pretend to know what is best!
The bottom line is if people are happy with that going in, the conversation on the details can continue in parallel.

Best 1.5TB drives for consumer RAID?
Which consumer-priced 1.5TB drives do people currently recommend?
I had zero read/write/checksum errors so far in 2 years with my trusty old Western Digital WD7500AAKS drives, but now I want to upgrade to a new set of drives that are big, reliable and cheap.
As of Jan 2010 it seems the price sweet spot is the 1.5TB drives.
As I had a lot of success with Western Digital drives I thought I would
