Why doesn't my wins.dat list all the LMBs?

I wanted to know which boxes were the LMBs and the DMB, so I looked
into the wins.dat on the WINS server. But in wins.dat, I only see one
line that has MSBROWSE in it:
"^A^B__MSBROWSE__^B#01" 1066639333 255.255.255.255 e4R
Is this supposed to be the DMB? Why the 255.255.255.255 address? I

WINS server DMB and LMBs not communicating across subnet to update browse lists?
Referencing: http://www.linuxtopia.org/online_books/network_administration_guides/samba_reference_guide/17_NetworkBrowsing_34.html
I've got two subnets (192.168.2.1 and 192.168.1.1). All the machines on both subnets are running XP Home or Pro and are all part of the same workgroup (WORKGROUP).
I've added an OpenSUSE box on x.x.2.1 and have set it as the WINS server with a very simple

WINS problems, samba 2.2.8a
I have a network with several WORKGROUPS(lets call them X,Y and Z) in it and a samba
server which is in one of the WORKGROUPS(X).
I have enabled WINS support in samba and all client machines has WINS server IP
configured that points to the samba server.
Problem:
When a browsning the network from a client I can only see a some nodes(or none at all)
in WORKGROUPS Y and Z. Usally it takes 10-20

cross-subnet browsing
I have 2 subnets. Subnet 1 has an NT WINS server. Subnet 2 has a Samba
server acting as domain master browser and local master browser
for a workgroup.
If I view the network neighborhood from a Win 95 PC on Subnet 1
(call it PC_A), I can see all the hosts in the workgroup on both subnets.
If I view the network neighborhood from a Win 95 PC on Subnet 2
(call it PC_B), I cannot see PC_A. I

Browsing+WINS integration
...lots of WAN-wide browsing problems, mainly because
Local Master Browsers are turned off etc. I got this idea:
When clients register their names with the WINS-server (nmbd), why not add
that name to the Domain Master Browsers (the same nmbd) browselist? This
would make it unneccessary to deal with LMBs.
Is this possible to implement?

wins vs. browsing, and documentation
...ust a quirk of the way the documentation is laid out,
or does it imply there is a closer connection between browsing
and WINS?
I think it is the former, but it gets a little confusing,
particularly when the same chapter is discussing two different
types of synchronization: synchronization between LMBs and DMBs
(which Samba *does* support -- I think) and also discussing
synchronization of data between WINS servers (which Samba does
*not* support).

Tracking WINS Problems
...ain network has two IP subnets on it. On this network, there are two
SMB workgroups (actually NT domains, as there's a PDC for each). The
members of the DEERECO workgroup are all in the 192.168.101.0 subnet,
while the HS workgroup computers are all 192.168.100.0. The PDCs for each
domain are LMBs and DMBs on their respective subnets. One Samba-running
(and Linux-running) host in the HS workgroup is using IP aliasing and has
IP addresses in each subnet. It is the LMB for the HS group on the
192.168.101.0 subnet. There are two other subnets on different network
segments (i.e. with routers...

For subnets other than the one containing the Windows NT PDC, you may set up Samba servers as LMBs as
described. To make a Samba server a Local Master Browser, set the following options in the <smbconfsection
name="[global]"/> section of the &smb.conf; file as shown in <link linkend="remsmb">Local Master Browser

Subnet not visible in Network Neighbourhood
Hi list!
I've got a debian "etch" box running samba 3.0.24.
The server is a firewall (running Shorewall 3.2.6) with five NICs:
eth0 -> DSL (it has a public IP address and it allows all the people
browse by masquerading other interfaces)
eth1 and eth3 -> bond0 (IP address is 192.168.1.1/24)
eth2 and eth4 -> bond1 (IP address is 192.168.2.1/24)
BTW, bond+ refers to an

Slightly OT: Browsing issues with Windows 2003 Server, Win 2K server and Windows 2000 clients
Hi, everybody:
Forgive me for bringing this to you. We normally use Samba servers but
are dealing with a situation involving two Windows 2003 servers and
browsing, and the truth is, I can't think of a better forum to bring
questions about browsing.
We have the following situation:
Domain controller is a Windows 2000 machine at 192.168.0.100
The backup domain controller is a Windows 2003

DNS problem?
I'm trying to join an XP SP2 PC called testpc to a test environment. Its
network settings are statically set. IP address is 10.8.3.209. I have a
PDC called gomer.mdah.state.ms.us w/ samba 3.0.26a and IP address is
10.8.3.37. On test PC I right click on my computer, properties, computer
name, change from workgroup WORKGROUP to domain ADAMSTEST.
But I get the error:

...t to see services on other IP subnets, then you need to set up a
Domain Master Browser (DMB). If you have a Windows NT Domain Controller,
then that machine will appoint itself DMB. If you do *not* have a DMB,
you can tell the Samba server to become a DMB and it will syncronize
browse lists with LMBs on other subnets. If that happens, your
browse.dat will get bigger.
