pivoting - summing up factors
Hi I would like to know how to pivot a table that will sum the number of plants (a or b) for each location (x,y,z) I have read on the listserve similar questions but which involve summing up numbers rather than factors. I have also read about the R package reshape on the listserve but wanted to know if there's a way to do it easily without the package Thanks for the help! location plant x

[EXTERNAL] Is there a new way to search the listserv archives?
>>> I see the link here, but clicking it results in a 404. Before I waste everyone's time posting my question, I really wanted to search to see if it's been solved already. I don't know of a baked-in official method, but the "site:alioth-lists.debian.net/pipermail/nut-upsuser/" search modifier should work with both DuckDuckGo and Google. Example:

multiple R listservs?
I thought more about this last night after my email about putting an end to "Read the Manual" replies. It seems that there are a handful of R Super-Programmers. If I were one, I would get tired of 100's of questions like "How can I get my Excel file into R!!!". Concurrently, R is experiencing an exponential increase in new users to the extent that there are now

matching a sequence in a vector?
Hi All, I've been trawling through the documentation and listserv archives on this topic -- but as yet have not found a solution. I'm sure this is pretty simple with R, but I cannot work out how without resorting to ugly nested loops. As far as I can tell, grep, match, and %in% are not the correct tools. Question: given these vectors -- patrn <- c(1,2,3,4) exmpl <-

transposing a distance matrix in R
Hi Jeannine, I'm just forwarding this Q&A back to the r-help list, you'll get more eyes on it and other people might have better solutions. Duplicate suppression from remote lists?
Hi, I have a setup where users on my server who are subscribed to several lists on a (remote) weirdly-configured listserver are getting many duplicate e-mails. I know why this is happening; but I don't have control over that listserver so I can't fix it. Is there a way for me to suppress duplicates from within Dovecot? The duplicates do all have the same (otherwise-unique) message

DNS CNAME question
Not sure if this is the best place to ask this question (and if so, please point me to a better listserv), but is there anything "wrong" RFC or best practice wise with pointing a CNAME record to a DNS server? (I'm using EveryDNS.net, and I'd like to make my CNAME records ns1-> 4.myDomain.com correspond to ns1->ns4.EveryDNS.net.) -------------- next part -------------- An

Greeting Listserv Readers, At http://r4stats.com/popularity I have added plots, data, and/or discussion of: 1. Scholarly impact of each package across the years 2. Survey results from a KDnuggests poll 6. A rudimentary analysis of the software skills that employers are seeking Thanks very much to all the folks who helped on this project incl...

non linear 3SLS with constraints
hi, i am new here and wanted to know, before i start learning yet another statistical package: I want to estimate a system of equations that is non linear in the parameters, using 3SLS. However, i will probably have to constrain some of the parameters to be between, say, zero and one. Is this possible with R, and better, is this easy? If so, since i am an absolute beginner, any pointers where

Aggregation using list with Hmisc summarize function
Hi All, I'm using the Hmisc summarize function and used list instead of llist to provide the by variables. It generated an error message. Is this a bug, or do I misunderstand how Hmisc works with lists? The program below demonstrates the error message. Thanks, Bob x<-1:8 group <- c(1,1,1,1,2,2,2,2) gender<- c(1,2,1,2,1,2,1,2) mydata<-data.frame(x,group,gender)

R performance--referred from Bioconductor listserv
Hi, all-- I wanted to start a (new) thread on R speed/benchmarking. There is a nice R benchmarking overview at http://www.sciviews.org/other/benchmark.htm, along with a free script so you can see how your machine stacks up. Looks like R is substantially faster than S-plus. My problem is this: with 512Mb and an overclocked AMD Athlon XP 1800+, running at 588 SPEC-FP 2000, it still takes me

They are looking for an additional application, service or appliance that can sit on the LAN, and

The Quality & Accuracy of R
Hi All, We have all had to face skeptical colleagues asking if software made by volunteers could match the quality and accuracy of commercially written software. Thanks to the prompting of a recent R-help thread, I read, "R: Regulatory Compliance and Validation Issues, A Guidance Document for the Use of R in Regulated Clinical Trial Environments (http://www.r-project.org/doc/R-FDA.pdf).

Development Process comment and Email list suggestion
It looks like Mark and others have addressed the development/CVS issues. We should let their plan be put into effect and give it a chance to work. Regarding the email list: A number of people have suggested creating more email lists. I think this is not a good idea because there will be even more cross posting than there is now between -dev and -users. Several years ago I was a moderator on the
