Trying to make a Delphi database application run correctly
Hello, everybody!
First of all I have to say that I'm already posted this question in another forum:
http://www.delphipages.com/threads/thread.cfm?ID=206179&G=206179
but as I haven't got any response from there I thought that this would be the right
place to ask what I asked there. I really hope to get your help about this because
I am totally new to Linux and I don't know where

Runing win32 Delphi applications with wine ?
Hello list reader,
Did people succed in trying to run Delphi applications with wine ???
Well, if they didn't work we can always try to use kylix to get them work.
But I suspect that we will have to go with lot of rewriting because of the
type of these applications : graphical intensive ones.
Any ideas about that ?
Thanks !

Writing Excel (.xls) files on non-Windows OSs using Perl
Hi all,
There have been quite a few threads in the recent months pertaining to
the ability to directly write native Excel (.xls) files from R. For
example, exporting R matrices and/or data frames to an Excel file, with
perhaps the ability to create multiple tabs (worksheets) within a single
file, with one tab/sheet per R object.
There exists the xlsReadWrite package on CRAN by Hans-Peter Suter,

Do's & Don'ts when creating a Win app to be wine compatible ?
...ws.
I don't have the time nor desire to create a
dedicated linux port of it, but as some users may
want to use it on linux, i'd like to know what
points could be important to make a win app run
as smoothly on wine as possible with little extra
effort.
Development system will be Delphi (no Kylix port - yet),
and graphics either GUI or windowed DirectDraw, perhaps
Direct3D... TCP/IP network access... probably a bit
background MIDI playback.
Suggestions? Hints?

winelib: porting Delphi apps
Just a (probably crazy) thought: What about porting Windoze apps that
aren't written in C? I've got a Delphi application that currently runs
under Virtual PC under OS 9.2 on an eMac (PPC Processor), which would
run much faster without those OS layers in between. I don't really have
a clue as to whether this really far-out-whacky or not cuz I am not
really a Delphi, or, for that matter,

What to do to use libvorbis with FreePascal?
All,
I am a FreePascal programmer. I am making a Pascal-based application now,
and want to use vorbis as its sound files.
What should I do so that I can use libvorbis with FreePascal?
(Actually, I use Lazarus as the Windows development environment)
Thanks.

...BSD license approach myself.
Here's another licensing question. Your source code lays out the
functionality of the FLAC codec and the file formats. What if someone comes
along and uses this code to implement FLAC with a different set of tools or
targets different operating systems. Say a Kylix port for Linux or an ASM
port to embedded MSDOS. Would this now be considered a derivative work that
would fall under the GPL/LGPL, even though none of your original source code
was used?

Hope this patch is recieved in the spirit in which it is sent. Wine has
come so far in the last two years and whilst the goalposts are
constantly being moved by MS is certainly nearing an extremely
significant milestone. I know I can wait for Borland to produce a C++
version of Kylix and then port my app over to native linux but in the
short term Wine is the only method I can use to get my app onto Linux
and away from dual-booting.

open source version works well and I am commited to support it as far as I

-- OTHER PLATFORMS (Linux/Mac)
Technically xlsReadWrite could be crossplatform. Flexcel already has a Kylix
version, which means that it could be made to run on Linux almost
immediately. The IMO better way would be to port the code to *FreePascal*:
this fits better in the open source world of R and this also would make it
possible to supply a Mac version. - While I started to port it, I didn't

hello Excel... (native/Package/BETA)
Dear list members
I am pleased to annonce that I have just finished a native Excel
reader/writer. It's wrapped up in two packages: either "xlsReadWrite" (open
source) or the slightly beefed-up "xlsReadWritePro" (shareware). Working
with Excel data is now as easy as writing read.xls and write.xls.

Streaming
This may be interesting to some.
I recently discovered AllCast.com which has developed a p2p streaming
solution. Unfortunately they decided to use WMA due to it's video
capability but hopefully they could be presuaded to switch to Vorbis
later when Tarkin is available. For audio though, it appears a good way
to reduce bandwidth requirements at the broadcasting end and potentially
