About object of class mle returned by user defined functions
Hi,
There is something I don't get with object of class "mle" returned by a
function I wrote. More precisely it's about the behaviour of method
"confint" and "profile" applied to these object.
I've written a short function (see below) whose arguments are:
1) A univariate sample (arising from a gamma, log-normal or whatever).
2) A character string

MDL ISIS Draw 2.5 + AutoNom2000 in WINE = need help
Hello,
I have successfully installed MDL ISIS Draw 2.5 (a program used in
chemistry) under Wine (0.9.12 in Debian). Now, I need to install an
addon (AutoNom2000, which is used to give IUPAC names of compounds)
for this program. (This addon requires Windows 2000/XP; Wine was
configured to "mimic" Windows 98 by default).
When I try to run its installer, I get the following:

Writing a .pdf file within a function - what do I need to return()?
I am trying to write a function that generates one PDf containing plots from
several .csv files within a directory. When I manually execute the code it
seems to work, but not when it is a function. I think I need to return()
something, but haven't had much luck figuring out what/how.
plot.isi<-function(csv.path="~/project/csv by cell") {

samba 3.2.3: win2k join fails, xp join works
Hi,
I recently upgraded my pdc server(samba3.0.x+ldap) to debian lenny(
samba 3.2.3).
After the upgrade, the win2k join is no longer working and returns
"Logon failure: the User Name unknown or bad password".
The Xp join works properly.
The same thing seems to be happen to other users; same problem and same logs:

I'm having major issues with smoothing my functional data
I'm referring to Jim Ramsay's
examples in his books. The following error message keeps appearing,
despite all my data being numeric.... can anyone kindly offer any suggestions?
isi - vector of argument values - i.e. the independent variable of the curves

problem specifying port to ssh
Here's the behavior I see:
# ssh don at isis.cs3-inc.com date
Thu Apr 6 14:19:16 PDT 2006
# ssh -p 22 don at isis.cs3-inc.com date
ssh: isis.cs3-inc.com: System error
These ought to be the same thing, since the default port is 22.
Whatever port I try to use (other than not specifying one at all)
seems to give the same problem.
This is on one particular linux (FC4) machine

Why software fails in scientific research
I came across this notice of an upcoming webinar. The issues identified in the
first paragraph below seem to me exactly those that the R project is designed
to address. The claim that "most research software is barely fit for purpose
compared to equivalent systems in the commercial world" seems to me not
quite accurate! Comments!

Still no(isy) app_jack in the box
Hello everyone!
So now I'm testing with chan_sip and I discovered, that I can make calls,
even if they're only listed as active channels.
But JACK just emmits white noise, with a highger frequency than 8kHz, in my
believe.
A call with app_record shows, that the signal is clear and very ear friendly
though. So how to proceed from here? What can I do to help someone look into

navel-gazing
I did some trawling on the ISI web of science,
selecting all papers citing all papers
with "R DEV COR TEAM" in the author field
(which is how ISI seems to be tagging things).
The results are interesting -- about 2400 references.
Enjoy these summaries ...
