OT: 1gigabit Nics
Begging indulgence of the list - asking here because due
to the higher likelyhood of getting an answer...
I have an application that often loses connection from one machine
to another when one (or more) of the machines has particular
brands of 1gig nics, but which runs rock solid when on 10meg
nics and some 1 gig nics.

data frame as X in linear model lm() ?
Dear R wizards: This must have an obvious solution, but I am stumped.
I can run a linear regression giving a matrix as the independent set
of variables, but if I give a data frame (which I would like to give,
because it should tell the linear model the names of the variables), R
does not like it. An example is:
N=20; y= rnorm(N);
x.m <- (matrix( nrow=N, ncol=2 ));
x.m[,1]=rnorm(N);

link() problem with dovecot-imapd
I'm having a few problems with dovecot-imapd (installed from debian
unstable) and am after some much needed help, all is set up and
configured, except for this final problem of when I try and move or copy
a message from one Maildir to another. I have the option
"maildir_copy_with_hardlinks = no" in the the dovecot.conf file but it
still seems to be trying to link() the file

No, where lies madness is in the self-centred way in which some
people make demands of others to alter innocuous behaviour so that

Thanks, I was kind of indulging my laziness, mentioned the command name
and assumed keen person will look up command usage him/herself. But on a
receiving end being lazy person I would prefer to just copy and paste
using _your_ post as opposed to my own ;-)

loading shared libraries at startup
Dear people,
I compiled a bit of C code into a shared library cftpR.so, and load it
into R at runtime using
> dyn.load("cftpR.so")
This works fine, however when I put
.First <- function()
{
dyn.load("/home/faheem/research/cftp/cftpR.so")
}
(using absolute path names; also tried with just dyn.load("cftpR.so")),
into my .Rprofile to load the library at

Memory in R.
Hi,
I am pretty new in R.
In fact, I started using R last month.
So, be indulgent if my questions seem
too boring or obvious.
I have 2 basic questions:
1 - I want to increase memory, but I can't find
the right way. E.g: in stata, you just type "set memory 1g".
When I try to load huge datasets, R crashes.
2 - I want to clear the memory (no object or data), such as the

very beginner's question
Begging the list's indulgence, an extremely dumb beginner's question. I've got 24 months' worth of numbers - ranging from 2 events per month, to 66 events per month. I want to take a stab at making a reasonable guess as to what the next year's data would be, approximately, i.e., based on the 24 months I've got, I want to be able to tell someone: "the 12 months after

Error in if (grep("hellow", a)) { : argument is of length zero
What is the proper syntax to ensure that "wow2" gets printed?
Thank you for your help!

Any way to temporarily disable a registered SIP PEER in Asterisk?
Hi Everyone,
We want to be able to momentarily or temporarily provide CONGESTION or
DE-REGISTER a SIP PEER to asterisk through WEB GUI. I don't want to indulge
into dial-plan and write changes to .conf file every-time. Is there any way
that a SIP PEER can be de-registered for an amount of time or maybe
deactivated? or there isn't such facility available in asterisk?
Thanks

iPod Touch/iPhone VPNs with CentOS.
I am looking at options for VPN connections from iPhones and iPod
Touches to CentOS systems. We use OpenVPN for connections with
Windows, Mac OS X, and other Linux systems, but there don't
appear to be any OpenVPN clients for iPhones (presumably because
there are no tun/tap interfaces available yet).
My experiences getting IPsec running on CentOS systems with OpenVPN
have not been pretty.

Ultimate PDC Upgrade
Samba folks:
The title maybe indulgent, but I wanted to get everyone's attention. I
currently run mandrake 9.0 (FILESERVER) with samba 2.2.8 running as a PDC

replace (FILESERVER). However, I want to install mandrake 9.2 and samba 3.0
on the new server -then I want the new server also to replace the PDC of the

Density estimation: scale back for calendar time
Dear all:Request your indulgence. The econophysics gurus do this stuff all
the time: all their PDFs are smooth, with neat log x axis.
1. The kernel density estimate (KDE) function returns the empirical
probability density at 2^n points (min: 512). The big question is how do I
scale back the x-values (say, density$x) to x-values in terms of the
original dataset?
2. To give you a concrete idea, i

Samba43 on FreeBDS10.3 ldap db contents
I am working through the book _Implementing Samba 4_ and revalidating
my existing install. I am at the point where I need to check the

this:
ldapsearch -x -h localhost -s base - \

Which produces this output:

gnophone/IAX problem
Greetings everyone,
I'm still a newbie, so please indulge me. I have set up an asterisk
server on my RH9 boxes for testing. Instead of immediately launching into
the hardware aspect of it I decided to go with 2 IAX clients (gnophone)
which I placed on 2 other strategic machines within my LAN. Here's my
problem, on one of the IAX clients (gnophone) I am able to do the asterisk

Creating shared libraries for dyn.load() in R
Dear R-users,
I am working to install Chong Gu's new gss library on my Linux system
(Redhat 5.1/i386), and have run into the following roadblock: Dr. Gu's R
code is a front end for a package of Fortran routines called RKPACK. While
I have no trouble compiling
the individual bits of Fortran code with fort77 in Linux, I don't know how
to link the resulting *.o files into a shared
