Aki: Over the last three days, I've watched many other questions being asked and answered. Were they also impolite to ask?
Peter: What exactly was impolite about identifying missing information and listing the specific details that I'm looking for?
Aki & Peter: Do either of you know the answers to at least some of my questions?

Darwinian software development and the library function
Hi all,
Legend has it, that polite R programmers don't overwrite, say, the
print function.
However, this seems quite un-Darwinian to me (especially given that I
don't want to call all my arguments x and y).
I might want a function print.foo (myfoo, ...).
So I decided to be very impolite (in one of my packages) and overwrite
a few standard generics.
Plus, to the best of my knowledge it doesn't interfere with normal use (yay...).
This brings us to the library function.
Which by default gives a whole lot of warnings loading my package (and
any other package that does something s...

NHW Project - some update
...is new version, I hope the NHW Project could attract a company
that would like to sponsorize the project (to adapt the codec to any size
of image for example).
Very quickly to finish, I have seen that on the Theora mailing list there
are employees from big companies. This can be indiscreet and very impolite,
but for example there are 2 employees from Apple who are on the Theora
channel mailing list... Does Apple can be interested in such a codec as the
NHW Project? If not, what does it lack to be of interest? Would you have
some advice?
Many thanks again!
Cheers,
Raphael

Differences between puppet and puppetd
Hi all,
I am using Puppet to execute an Expect script (http://expect.sourceforge.net)
on a client. The Puppet recipe, test.pp, is:
exec { ''/root/test.exp'':
command => ''/root/test.exp'',
logoutput => true
}
The recipe runs correctly when run using ''puppet --debug --verbose test.pp'':
debug: /Stage[main]//Exec[/root/test.exp]:

"TipsAndTricks/ApacheVhostDir" changes for virtual host source files
...SELinux user discrepancy is
resolved with the chcon command shown. Is there a desire for additional
explanation of the process?
The additional warning against the vhost.d/ section seems to excessively
disparage my contribution and discourage other options. Certainly, it could
be considered impolite to expand and significantly modify the content of a
document when the author is available and willing to make changes. As well,
I seek to improve my documentation technique and by-passing me deprives me
of the opportunity.
I'd like to know the process that culminated in the changes to my...

[LLVMdev] running clang format on the Mips target
We are considering running clang format on the whole Mips target.
Is there any rule against this?
Is there any good argument against doing this even if there is no rule
against it?
TIA.

object.size vs lobstr::obj_size
...have posted this question on R-help where it was suggested to me
that I might get a better response on R-devel. So far I have gotten no
response. The post I am talking about is here:
https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-help/2020-February/465700.html
My apologies for cross-posting, which I am aware is impolite and I
should have posted on R-devel in the first place - but I wasn't sure.
Here is my question again:
I am currently working through Advanced R by H. Wickham and came
across the `lobstr::obj_size` function which appears to calculate the
size of an object by taking into account whether the sa...

installing samba
Hi,
I just downloaded the latest version of Samba in the form of samba-latest.tar.gz
Managed to unzip it with gunzip but cannot figure out how to install it. Tried rpm but didn't work.
I have an earlier version of Samba (2.0.6) on my SuSE 6.4 machine already.
Can I just install the new version or do I need to do some sort of uninstall of the previous version first.
advTHANKSance,
Mariann

You did:

Linus' comments were also confrontational and impolite, and he then proceeded to continue Linux-specific discussions that were completely off-topic for this list while keeping LLVMDev on the cc: list, wasting the time (and bandwidth) of all of the subscribers to this list who are not Linux developers.
The Linux kernel community has been in the tech...

Who said anything about almighty authorities, and who mentioned Linus
or the kernel community now? Their emails are on the LLVMDev list for
everyone to read: I picked up what made sense to me.
But whatever.

[LLVMdev] Casting between address spaces and address space semantics

What would the warning say? There is nothing useful the linker could
tell the user, and having a low level tool like the llvm linker
library emit warnings (where? to stderr?) is extremely impolite for
some clients. If a specific client cares about this, it should check
and report in its own way.

When you're resurrecting six-month-old threads, it's polite to quote some history. :)
I don't know offhand what the state of this warning is in Xcode 4.3, and I
can't comment on potential future releases. If this matters a lot to you,
please just try it and
