Xen HVMs run VERY slowly on SAN box
....0.1 on the dom0 and Ubuntu lucid domUs. We are now using fully virtualized (HVM) vms. In our configuration the dom0 administers to domUs created and run on a SAN box accessed via private network (192.168...). A sample configuration file is pasted below. We have had little or no IO problem with HVMs created and run locally on dom0. However, HVMs run on the SAN suffer from VERY feeble IO. Even a entry of a single character or entering return will cause the command line to freeze for 30 seconds or more. We have had no IO problems running ''regular'' para-virtualised Xen vms o...

linux-image-5.10.0-6-amd64: VGA Intel IGD Passthrough to Debian Xen HVM DomUs not working, but Windows Xen HVMs do work

XEN HVMs on LVM over iSCSI - test results, (crashes) and questions
...me enabled. CHAP authentication enabled. I''ve successfully installed XEN 3.1.0 from source (kernel 2.6.18-xen) and the QLogic ISP4XXX iSCSI Host Bus Adapter driver 5.01.00.08-2. I have successfully installed a windows XP HVM, a Scientific Linux CERN - SLC - 4 and 3 (RedHat EL 4 and 3) HVMs and other non HVM machines. The volume I imported from the iSCSI is used with LVM: each HVM domain has a 8GB drive partitioned with a 1GB swap and rest on /. These are performance for bonnie++ (Per Chr column write and read): iSCSI dom0: w: 54M, r: 47M (no domU) Local disk dom0: w: 59M, r...

using LVM inside HVMs
Is it recommended to use logical volume management INSIDE a hardware virtual machine domU guest? I was trying to think through the ramifications, and I did not think that the LVM in the master dom0 would be able to handle the partition resizing INSIDE the domU guest should such a necessity ever occur. As a background, the physical machine is running hardware RAID. The dom0 is running LVM.

pci-passthrough nic but no link
I hope someone can enlighten me. I have a quad-port Intel 82580 nic (igb driver) on my system and I''d like to dedicate each nic to a HVM via VT-d PCI passthrough. The IOMMU on my system seems to work, I can assign the PCI devices to my HVMs. The HVMs see the pci device and load their respective igb drivers, and ethtool -i eth0 works on each HVM, shows the drivers are loaded and the eth0 interfaces are up. Hvm0 - 82580.port0 Hvm1 - 82580.port1 Hvm2 - 82580.port2 Hvm3 - 82580.port3 However I don''t get any link at my...

Question about implementation of 32-bit guests on 64-bit hypervisor (IDT-related)
In a recent conversation one of my coworkers raised a concern about memory limitations when running 32-bit guests on top of the 64-bit hypervisor. At this point the discussion is academic; I don''t know when/if we''ll ever be able to get system resources to test it, to see if the concerns that he expressed are real. So I decided to post this in hope of getting comments from the

Re: How much is involved in porting a new OS to Xen fullvirtualizaiton?
...legal stuff they''ve pulled over the past couple of years I''m sure that no one is going to be eager to get in their way on purpose. What issues are you having getting SCO to run under XEN? Theoretically, with XEN HVM support, you ought to be able to run just about any O/S. XEN HVMs emulate a standard set of hardware similar to VMware, so you just need to figure out what the hardware is and make sure the correct drivers are loaded. I''ve run into some issues with O/Ss on XEN HVMs, but mostly they''re older O/Ss that don''t support idle calls to the CPU...

problems with xen and sr-iov/iommu
...ave successfully built and installed each of these on my VT-x and VT-d capable x86_64 system, over a fedora 14 installation. Most of the features seem to be running just fine, but I''m having a real problem getting the virtual functions from my 82576 module to map successfully into my HVMs. The PCI passthrough feature seems to work fine when I assign the physical functions of the nic to the HVMs. They respectfully see the PCI devices, load the igb drivers on boot and have network access. However when I switch to using the virutal functions (starting with simple case of '...

XenServer Tools For Linux
Hi, I installed two linux VMs in XenServer 6.0, one is CentOS 5.5 and the other is Ubuntu 10.04, both of which are HVMs. I install xenserver tools many times and the packages are installed, but XenCenter keeps telling me that "Xenserver tools is not installed". Are xenserver tools of linux intended only for PV vm? I am not familiar with xenserver and need help. Thanks! Best Regards, Xinli _______________...

Trace SRIOV NIC''s MSI-X delivery to Xen
Hi all, I''m using Xen4.0.1 with SLES11SP1 with Intel''s SRIOV NIC in passthrough mode to FedoraCore14 guest HVMs. From guest HVM I''m able to send packets out but not able to receive the same. Intel NIC HW counters are reporting receiving packets but the same is not reaching the guest HVM. My NIC uses MSI-X to report packets to SW. which should be received by Xen and forwarded to HVM guest where...

problem about network in Xen!
HI, I have been stuck by this problem for the whole week. We just did a simple experiment to test the network performance in xen use the benchmark--iperf. Our NIC is Gigabit, and we got exactly correct data in hostOS--fedoral core 8 without xen running, the bandwidth of the network was 931Mbps. But the problem is, when we start guest OS--fedoral core 8, and running iperf on it, we got data only

Virsh-install error
Hi everyone, This is my first attempt at a PV guest install from scratch and I''m a tad confused. Have I answered one of the questions virsh-install asks wrongly? Does anyone know of a general guide for installing PV guests with virsh-install? (Most Centos docs seem to use the GUI based virt-manager and I only have command line access). Am I meant to make use of the files here:

SDL display of HVMs -- how?
I''m having some trouble working out how to make the SDL interface for HVM domUs appear. The documentation simply says "it will appear" when you start the domU, but doesn''t state what packages or libraries are needed in order for this magic to happen, or explain how to debug it if it doesn''t happen. All that I''m getting at the moment is a domU (running

Desynchronize clock
I don''t want my dom0 to update the clock in my HVM domU. I''ve already disabled network-based time synchronization inside the HVM. I''ve tried setting /proc/sys/xen/independent_wallclock=1 and then restarting xend, but the guest still gets the correct time. Any ideas on how to accomplish this? Bug#618576: xen-3.2-1: VNC display over HVM XEN 3/Lenny AMD64, displays a blank screen when Debian-Installer Squeeze AMD64 is running on it
Package: xen-hypervisor-3.2-1-amd64 Version: 3.2.1-2 Severity: important I've a Debian Lenny AMD64 as production server, where it has important HVMs that runs correctly. The problem occurs when i try to create a HVM from a Debian Squeeze AMD64 iso file. At first, the VNC display specified shows perfectly the Debian Installer menu, but when I choose an option (Install or Graphical Install), the VNC displays a blank screen. Something similar ha...

Dom0 Virtual Memory
...all about the P2M, M2P tables and mappings, Now I''m trying to figure out how dom0 virtual memory is implemented, and I have some questions. The platform I''m working on is x86 with Intel VT enabled. 1. Is dom0 virtual memory managed differently than the other domains? what about hvms? and domUs? 2. What tables are used to manage the virtual memory? 3. What is the easiest method to do a dom0 virtual address to machine address translation (from Xen itself)? Thanks for your help in advance! Cheers, Eric. _______________________________________________ Xen-devel mailing list Xe...
