need-restart ?
Hi,
today I updated the glibc packages on some CentOS machines. After the
Update I checked which
services/processes I have to restart "yum -C ps" or "needs-restarting"
At the most machines I get no information about necessary restarts, but
at two machines a long listing :
1 : /sbin/init
386 : /sbin/udevd-d
659 : /sbin/udevd-d
999 : /usr/sbin/vmtoolsd

Hald
No manpage or other info in the system about the hald or hal. What
little I did find on a RH site did not really enlighten me that much.
Is there some obscure documentation somewhere about the hald and its
assets and attributes?

Memory usage bar plot
Hi,
I haven't tried the code yet. Is there a way to parse this data
using R and create bar plots so that each program's 'RAM used' figures are
grouped together.
So 'uuidd' bars will be together. The data will have about 50 sets. So if
there are 100 processes each will have about 50 bars.
What is the recommended way to graph these big barplots ? I am looking

What is hald doing?
The hald daemon is the second largest consumer of CPU time on my CentOS
v4.3 system. Is there a way to determine what it is spending all this
time on?
Thanks.

NUT-NG (was: ideas for a new UPS infrastructure)
some notes:
- for this kind of discussion, please cc upsdev list (I've added it),
- I've fwded the full thread to upsdev,
- this subject is part of what I call NUT-NG (next gen.), aka nut 3.0...
- I'll study in depth the thread this week end, and complete with my thoughts,
- thanks to Stan to have put us all in touch

sysfs udev hald -_-
I tried creating a new partition on a disk.
After the partition table was written, I got a message about the kernel
still using the old partition table.
How do I get whatever system to register the new partition short of
rebooting the box?

Odd hang on a 5.6 system
Hi All, I've been trying to trace the cause of a hang on a 5.6 i386 system.
After running for almost a year, it hung last week, when I plugged in a
screen it was blank, machine was unresponsive to the keyboard, over the
network ssh and other daemons didn't respond but the thing has two
network cards and routing from one to the other was still working. So
the kernel was up and I

CentOS4 desktop has stopped recognizing removable media - haldaemon problem?
USB sticks and cameras used to pop right up on my desktop. Now they
don't. I've checked the Gnome "Drives and Media Preferences" and
nothing has changed -- I have "Mount removable media when inserted"
etc. (Tried toggling it off and back on, no effect.)
I've logged out and back in, even rebooted. /var/log/messages shows
the devices are being recognized by udev:

New problem, new thread (I think)
Greets all;
I was just booted to mdv-2010-x64 where I found my lack of sound problems.
Whoopy ding...
But when I rebooted to fedora, now the driver cannot disconnect and gain
access to the ups.
I installed the 52-nut udev file in /etc/udev.d, and it reads that it should
setup /dev/hiddev0 like this and with 0664 perms when it finds that ups:

still get the following error on "make distcheck", and I don't know

Device 0 (vif) could not be connected. Hotplug scripts not working.
Hi,
I got this error when starting a domU on Centos 5.1 i386,
Device 0 (vif) could not be connected. Hotplug scripts not working.
Why is this happening ? I should restart the machine to see if this
still happends after a fresh network bridge. But it's somehow a
production server, I would like not to restart it, if possible. No domU
is currently running. I could start domUs a week ago.

Rhino cards lock up system -- anyone else ever seen this?
Hi Folks,
Struggling with a new * installation with 2 Rhino R2T1 cards. For some
reason, the system is locking up tight when you run ztcfg to configure the
card(s). Configuration is asterisk 1.2.14, zaptel 1.2.12, and rhino's
1.05rxt1 drivers. The cards seem to load fine with a "modprobe rxt1",
but once
you run "ztcfg -vvv", the system will lock up within a few seconds, no

Build error
Hi,
I was fooling around with the bcmxcp driver and enabling the
alarm functions. I hade tested this on some of the ups'es so
I was planning to submit it to the svn trunk.
But, as the bcmxcp is shared code for serial and usb I got a
problem.
When enabling --with-hal it halt on the build of
hald-addon-bcmxcp_usb.
