Discussion of the GPL on Groklaw
...ssion of the GPL on R-devel; I'm just giving a reference because the subject of the GPL, the license under which R is issued, has been brought up on this list. If you want to follow some of the legal discussion of the Free Software Foundation's General Public License (GPL), the web site groklaw.net is required reading. One reason is because Pamela Jones (PJ as she is known there), the primary author, writes so well. Even if I didn't agree with her opinions I would enjoy her writing. Recently a lawyer wrote an article for LinuxInsider criticizing the GPL. PJ rebuts the article...

Good news regarding Wine and patent threats
There's a groklaw article summarizing recent discussion about the impact of the Bilski case on software patents: http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20081102011538422 "The judge says this kind of cloning could be done without infringing Microsoft's copyrights, but how about its patents? Inclusive language in LLVM: can we rename `master` branch?
...but not just because the Americans are trying to solve their political angst. ALL words have overtones, and all the variations of English/American/Strine/Pidgin/Whatever-else-I-can't-name make life very difficult. I was never able to participate properly when the subject of race came up on Groklaw - "black" was seen as an offensive and banned word, and of course I can't use the phrase "African American". The equivalent here if I said "African Brit" stinks of an accusation of "you traitor!" They're not Africans, they're Caribbeans or Nige...

SCO & R
I apologize if this has been addressed before; recently I read an article in Forbes which discussed how SCO was going after companies that have been using Linux. The article made the point that the ideas behind GPL are under attack precisely because no one is making sure that the code being put into the freely avail. packages isn't owned by someone else. Here's my question: Is R

SCO OpenServer
...e years ago at upgrading OpenServer 5 release systems to OpenServer 6, and I couldn't keep any of the relevant in house software working *anyway*, and it was really expensive. It made better sense to move away from a vendor that was in legal and fiscal and technological ruin. (Check the old www.groklaw.net archives, it was a fascinating destruction of a previously robust company and technologies.) So it was much easier to simply upgrade to an RHEL release and migrate the in house software, and keep an old OpenServer system or two alive as needed to ensure access to old data by running virtual ma...

Video interview with Eben Moglen.
Hi all, Hope this isn't off-topic, but I thought the lists might be interested in a video interview I did with Eben Moglen, the head of the Software Freedom Law Center. Eben has given legal advice and help for Samba for many years, and is a very interesting person to listen to. Hope people find this enjoyable: http://google-opensource.blogspot.com/2012/07/geek-time-with-eben-moglen.html

Hi Fred. Appreciate your response. Maybe in my explanation I have some red and green apples, but I can agree that my understanding is as you explained it. 😊 The point is that if I can successfully stream mp4 with H.264 and AAC encoding without any issues to icecast, I can then use ffmpeg to turn it into HLS which then solves my iOS support issue. The CPU cost of repackaging MP4 into HLS

HTTP parse error due to an extra percent sign
If you append an extra percent sign to a URL that gets passed to mongrel, it will return a Bad Request error. Kind of odd that "http://localhost/%" causes a "Bad Request" instead of a "Not Found" error. Here is the error from the mongrel log: HTTP parse error, malformed request (127.0.0.1): #<Mongrel::HttpParserError: Invalid HTTP format, parsing fails.>

Best method of grabbing Now Playing metadata with PHP?
Hi... Can someone do me the favour of pointing us at a routine, library, script or technique that will grab Now Playing metadata (Title, Artist, Album) remotely (ie from another machine) from an Icecast 2.4.x server reliably for logging purposes, preferably using PHP? Ideally we would grab the metadata when it changes - all the methods we've tried so far require us to poll the server so

How do I get my IT department to "bless" R?
I currently use R at work "under the radar", but there's a chance I could loose that access. I'd like to get our company to feel comfortable with open source and R in particular. Does anyone have any experience with their company's IT department and management that they would be willing to share? How does one get an all Microsoft shop on board with allowing users to user

Red Hat CEO: Go Ahead, Copy Our Software
http://www.businessinsider.com/red-hat-ceo-go-ahead-copy-our-software-2013-8 Title says is all. Nice to know RH understands and accepts the relationship between CentOS and RHEL. Although it is complex. After all, if too many choose CentOS, there may no longer be a CentOS. However, I don't think I would refer to CentOS as a "parasite" as the author Matt Asay does. Inclusive language in LLVM: can we rename `master` branch?
Hi, When we moved to GitHub a few months ago, we used without more consideration the "master" convention to name our development branch. On SVN it used to be just "trunk". This naming is unfortunate <https://tools.ietf.org/id/draft-knodel-terminology-00.html#rfc.section.1.1> as it can hurt some contributors
