Launch of OggHelp.com
Hello everyone, I would like to bring to your attention the new website that I have been working on. It is a portal for articles, links, and support for everything related to Ogg Vorbis. It just started and hopefully will be evolving rapidly. http://www.ogghelp.com I have modeled it after the group of successful Help pages such as http://VCDHelp.com and DVDHelp.com. I've been

who needs documentation?
...references are probably out. Also I have no experience with formats other than plain text and HTML, which means man pages, info pages, DocBook or what-have-you would be prohibitively difficult. End-user documentation may be the place for me. For an example of my "work", see [ http://grahammitchell.net/files/copyrand.txt ], which is the documentation for a utility I wrote for my own use nearly four years ago and subsequently released. Most of the other programs listed at [ http://grahammitchell.net/code.html ] also have documentation included in the zipfile/tarball, if someone wants to r...

mp3 quality vs Vorbis 1.0?
Many of you have read and my "introduction to compressed audio with Vorbis" and given me excellent feedback. But with 1.0 about to hit the streets, I figured I'd freshen it up a bit. [ http://grahammitchell.net/writings/vorbis_intro.html ] In particular, it contains two paragraphs discussing the relative quality of Vorbis vs mp3 at a certain target bitrate. These figures seem to be roughly accurate, but they were for the rc3 encoder. Can you guys who've been playing with what we called &quot...

how long until 1.1?
On Thursday 25 September 2003 18:15, Tyler Knott wrote: > BTW, while we're on 1.1, how long until we can see that release? Well, 1.0.1 is due "soon". It's mostly waiting on an updated Win32 SDK, if I understand things correctly. 1.1 is not anytime soon, and is the "AAC-killer" version, I think. -- Graham Mitchell - computer science teacher, Leander High School

Bitrate stripping?
Hey y'all -- I heard some discussion a while back about "bitrate stripping" to reduce filesize without re-encoding ... has this gone anywhere? Compiling oggenc in mingw32...no FLAC support?
After pinpointing a ld switch problem in the ogg/src/Makefile file, I managed to get libogg and libvorbis to compile using mingw32. FLAC compiled flawless so the configure script in vorbis-tools detected FLAC and included support for it in oggenc. And when oggenc was compiling, I noticed it included the FLAC libraries so everything went smoothly. But the oggenc.exe made only recognises wav

ogg123 volume?
Hi, I need to adjust the output volume from ogg123 the same way that mpg123 has the "-f n change scalefactor [32768]" option. I need to do this within ogg123, instead of alternatives that involve pipes, such as piping the output to sox. I do not believe that this is currently possible in ogg123, and I'm looking for some suggestions as to how it can be accomplished by modifying

New Member seeks advice.
Sorry about that! I realized I had made the mistake of just changing the subject title minutes after I had posted. If I broke a second rule I am not sure what it was but if two out of three is all I managed to break, with almost no effort on my part I am sure I could bat 1000! I will check the Speex cite you recommended. I will likely have some questions. Thanks, Michael

VBR vs ABR
Hello, I purchased the "CD Ripper 2" plugin for Winamp 3 and need help choosing an ogg encoding format. It seems I have the choice between VBR and ABR formatted oggs. I am familiar with VBR (variable bit rate) but not sure what ABR stands for? Is it possible/desirable to specify a bit rate when encoding oggs, or does the nature of the ogg format make use of varying bit rates?

Firefox plugin to auto convert audio files into Ogg
per > http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=63653 The above thread on the Fedora Forums about a script that can automatically convert one audio format to another got me thinking > wouldn't it be fantastic to be able to right click on an MP3 (or other audio file) while in Firefox, and automatically have the file converted into Ogg at the same time as the file is being saved

compressed audio tutorial - "major" update
I've made a large update to the introduction to compressed audio. I completely rewrote the first section, which I wasn't happy with. It now features two diagrams (worth 1000 words each!), and is broken up into a couple of sections. http://cs.leander.isd.tenet.edu/~mitchell/vorbis_intro.html I have also continued to tweak other sections based on feedback from email and this forum.

beta firmware for Neuros available
For the two or three of you who are subscribed to the mailing list that *haven't* heard already... from the blurb on Slashdot: "Xiph.org has made a beta release of firmware with Ogg Vorbis support for the Neuros portable music player. You can grab the firmware from the Neurosetta site. Note that this beta release only plays Vorbis files, and may skip on very high quality files, like

Hz vs bitrate?
the Vorbis FAQ says: "mid to high quality (8kHz-48.0kHz, 16+ bit, polyphonic) audio and music at fixed and variable bitrates from 16 to 128 kbps/channel." What is the difference between Hz and bitrate? Doesn't MP3 support higher bitrates? Pointers for more reading are welcome.

Using oggenc
Hello all, I wanted to ask some experienced users some settings about oggenc. 1. How can I setup oggenc so that I can DIRECTLY rip tracks off my audio cd? As we all know, audio cd doens't really have a file format that we can directly use. Do I HAVE to convert them to wav files then convert them to ogg files? 2. The options: -b -m -M with the bitrate of the audio file. If I set something

OT: good headphones?
This is off-topic, mostly, but I figure you guys will have some knowledge in this sound-quality-related area. I'm sitting here looking at the most recent "Musician's Friend" at headphones and thinking about getting a pair. They've got products from AKG, Fostex, Audio Technica, Nady, Sennheiser, and Sony, at price points ranging from $16 to $130 (list prices $20 to
