GPX files
I have a Garmin 78s marine GPS receiver and it stores tracks in GPX format. This is an XML encoded set of points giving longitude, latitude, time and sea depth. Garmin support viewing this via their Garmin Express product, but there only seem to be Windows and Mac versions. I've emailed them and await a rep...

How to make Garmin see Garmin?
I have Garmin's topo map software for the USA, 2008 version, and also a very old MapSource MetroGuide (ca. 1998) installed under wine. All is well -- except the biggest thing. Neither program can detect the etrex vista nor the rino 120, using Garmin's cables. The topo couldn't before I added th...

Package XML: Parse Garmin *.tcx file problems
I'm struggling with package XML to parse a Garmin file (named *.tcx). I wonder if it's form is incomplete, but appreciably reluctant to paste even a shortened version. The output below shows I can get nodes, but an attempt at value of a single node comes up empty (even though there is data there. One question: Has anybody succeeded parsing...

Mappery inquiry
Last time I tried, a few years back, Wine was not yet up to handling Garmin's proprietary topo map software. It would install, and sometimes even work, so long as I didn't try to connect a GPS to it. (The ones I have are all also Garmins -- old ones wanting a serial port.) I made a huge effort, for most of a year, with a lot of help from high-powered Alpha Plu...

Garmin Trip & Waypoint Manager installer won't run
Hi, I'm trying to install version 4.0 from the CD that came with my GPS unit. I'm able to run Setup.exe and get to the initial startup menu. The links to visit the Garmin website and exit the installation work fine but when I click the one to install the app I get the hourglass cursor for a fraction of a second, like it's starting to do something, but nothing happens. This is my first attempt at using wine so I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this. Any help w...

Cannot install Garmin City Navigator DVD - err:msi:ACTION_InstallFiles compressed file wasn't extracted (L"c:\\windows\\system32\\ROBOEX32.DLL")
Hello! I'm trying to install the software "Garmin City Navigator Europe NT v9" for a Garmin StreetPilot c510 - a GPS navigation device. When I run the installer in wine 0.9.26 on Gentoo, it finally errors out with a useless error message in the GUI. On the starting terminal I find: err:msi:cabinet_notify failed to create L"c:\\windows\...

Serial port not working anymore on Garmin Mapsource
I have Garmin Mapsource v8 working 100% with Wine and Linux kernel 2.6.16. Transfer from/to the GPS connected to a USB Serial converter on /dev/ttyUSB0 works 100% also. But then, I try with kernel 2.6.18 and 2.6.19 and Mapsource doesn't find the GPS. It's not a Linux issue as I can access the GPS with mi...

Recent version of Garmin Mapsource doesn't work
Garmin's Mapsource versions prior to 6.16.1 worked almost flawlessly. Now with version 6.16.1 which I upgraded, the main map window doesn't draw the map anymore, just a gray tile. You can still zoom in and zoom out, and even pass your mouse to see that its over some road, but you can't see...

Need a faster function to replace missing data
...y the GPS had some problems and sometimes the fishes depth was recorded but not its location. I fortunately had a back-up GPS that was taking location data every five minutes. I would like to merge the two files, replacing the missing value in the vscan (automatic) file with the location from the garmin file. Since we were getting vscan records every 1-2 seconds and garmin records every 5 minutes, I need to find the right place in the vscan file to place the garmin record - i.e. the closest in time, but not greater than 5 minutes. I have written a function that does this. However, it works with...

Need assistance connecting Garmin GPS via USB in Mapsource
...at I am operating in Ubuntu 8.10, with MapSource 6.13.6 installed via Wine 1.0.1. I know there is an issue in getting MapSource to recognize the GPS while connected via USB but I am unable to understand the steps provided to solve this issue. I've been advised to enter "sudo modprobe garmin_gps" in terminal and to check the results. So I connect the GPS and get a "/dev/ttyUSB0" file. I've been advised it should be owned by root and dialup group and to change the ownership to myself. However I don't know how to do this. I was also told to go to ~/.wine/device...

Mappery breakthrough : Garmin topo, vista, rino, under linux & CXO
...re and the special GPS cables are designed for, and which have always worked under W98 and XP, but never under linux). I would have to get hold of some USB drivers somewhere, somehow; but I had no idea where nor how to look. Saturday (yesterday), I stumbled onto a prominent link to download Garmin drivers from. (All my GPSs and one of my four main suites of software are from Garmin. A no-brainer at last!) I grabbed them, installed them with CXO, opened the Garmin software, plugged a GPS into a USB port, turned it on, let it boot, and told the software to go git 'em. RESULT : We...
