Evil Scaffold
I read the Amy Hoy''s presentation on why scaffold is not a good thing for beginners. For admin
application, is it ok to use scaffold?

Store common settings in one file?
Hi,
I''m looking for a way to store common settings, such as the
application_name or email address from value in a file.
I then want to be able to call these settings in my controllers and
models?
Is there any easy way of doing this? and where would you recommend I
save the file ?
Thanks

RoR & Lightbox
Has anybody else had a problem with using Lightbox in their RoR apps? I
include all the necessary files in application.rhtml and then attempt to use
the Lightbox functionality in pages and such. Nothing happens except that a
new page opens up with the link to the image I was attempting to show with
Lightbox. I''ve even gone so far as to strip out everything except the

file_column just will not work...
Hello,
I have been trying for some time to get a file to upload using the
file_column plugin.
My code is here: http://pastie.caboo.se/7304
But my code is not the issue. I cannot even pass the unit test that
come with the file_column plugin.
If I run ruby file_column_test.rb i get:
1) Error:
test_store_dir_callback(FileColumnTest):
TypeError: can''t convert Fixnum into String

ROR host: dreamhost or godaddy?
hi all,
i am looking for a host for my ROR web app. the target audience will be
70% from mainland china, and 30% from the rest of the world.
i dont want a chinese hosst because:
1. it''s very slow for the rest of the world to access to it.
2. the speed is quite ok for china to access the us sites.
both dreamhost and godaddy provide similar budget plans, and i saw them

Rails Documentation is RoR''s achilles heel
Hi All
Just a few minutes back I came across a post about autotest/zentest and that
post reignited the feeling I get when I look at RDoc, RoR documentation.
The main thing that is lacking in RoR and to some extent Ruby''s RDoc is
showing method names in HTML is not documentation. The arguments to method,
exception/errors raised by method, return value and a usage example
completes the

Pre-populate db with yaml outside of testing?
Hi.
What is the best way to pre-populate your database with records while
developing, not testing?
For example, I want to:
1) > [run this command to populate db]
2) > ruby script/server
3) now I can surf to localhost:3000 and my app will already have relevant
data
I''m hoping to use yaml to suck it in.
Is there a way to use the Fixture class to handle this even though this is

Dealing with Form Data
Google lets me down once again :-)
Coming from a PHP background I know I can take submitted form data, mix
it, mash it and put it together in very odd ways. In other words do
this.
$title = "My Title"
$sub_title = "My Sub Title"
$full_title = $title . "-" . $sub_table
And submit $full_title to the database. I have yet to find a solution
for this in Rails - I

''Code table'' best practices?
I''ve been going back and forth about this kind of thing for a while.
I reverse my opinion on it every project, and I''m wondering if anyone
has any advice/battle scars to share. As usual, please forgive my
long-windedness in advance.
Let''s say I have this:
Table: PLANS
ID int
CATEGORY_CODE_ID int
--Other junk removed for clarity
Table: CATEGORY_CODES

Confusion with expressing many to many relationship
Hi folks, I am in the process of converting an existing non-rails
application to rails, and am not sure what the best approach would be
for specifying the relationship between the two sets of data.
I''ll describe the existing table structures first.
Table 1: Urls
Each url has a unique id and two lists of Phrases, these are currently
setup as varchars with "," delimitation -

REST Relationship Models
I''m trying to figure out an elegant way to do this:
I have the following three tables:
people, employer, employees
And consequently the following three models:
class Person < ActiveRecord::Base
end
class Employer < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :employees
end
class Employee < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :person
belongs_to :employer
end
I want to be able to say:

Off-topic: Rails hosting
All,
I''ve been looking switching hosting providers, and have been strongly
considering TextDrive. Doing a little Googling turns up a fair
number of complaints that seem to be centered around server
performance, stability and uptime. Since I know a poorly written app
can contribute to all of these, I thought I''d pose the question to
all of you. Does anyone here host

A good tutorial
Are there any other tutorial than "Agile Web Development with Rails"
that you can suggest? So far I can''t say that RoR has been easy to

Why Ruby on Rails
Our company is mainly made up off application developers but we have a
lot of web work coming up so we are deciding which route to take at the
moment. We initially identfied ASP.NET 2.0 with the ATLAS AJAX
framework because of the RAD features, easy to learn etc.
I had read some stuff on ROR and our Boss who is open minded allowed me
to create a sample application with ROR. He was impressed

DHH''s Post on Ruby Talk -- Rails 1.1.5: Mandatory security patch (and other tidbits)
We''re still hard at work on Rails 1.2, which features all the new
dandy REST stuff and more, but a serious security concern has come to
our attention that needed to be addressed sooner than the release of
1.2 would allow. So here''s Rails 1.1.5!
This is a MANDATORY upgrade for anyone not running on a very recent
edge (which isn''t affected by this). If you have a public

Drupal vs. Ruby on Rails
Hello all,
Maybe the $subj is a little bit weird (i.e. apples vs oranges) but it is
a situation i am facing at the moment: We are developing a small web
site which will be mostly a CMS (more or less) and my colleagues is
arguing for drupal, and i am for RoR.
Maybe i can formulate the question in a different way: when to use a CMS
(not necessarily drupal but e.g. Radiant CMS) and when to use Ruby
