new CentOS 5 as DNS server
...o the world) DNS
box died from a massive rootkit/hack last night. It was running an old
Slackware 9.1 installation and I will be completely cleaning those
drives sector-by-sector. After which I'll be installing CentOS 5 on
that hardware.
As it will be a production server and this is my first foray into
CentOS/SELinux in a production environment I was hoping to get a
recommended list of what to include and, more specifically, what *not*
to include from the distro CDs
I will be doing a text based install, hoping to avoid the installation
of X. Other than BIND and vsftpd, I don't think I...

Introductory statistics and introduction to R
...ght, diligent second-year graduate student who wants to
learn statistics and R and will, in effect, be taking a tutorial from me
on these subjects. (If you've seen some of my questions on this list,
please don't laugh.) As an undergrad he majored in philosophy, so this
will be his first foray into computer programming and statistics.
I'm thinking of having him use "Introductory Statistics with R" by Peter
Dalgaard, but I'm unable to tell if the book requires calculus. I don't
think this student knows calculus, so this would be a deal breaker. Can
someone tell m...

Question about replication
...ld have to be one way. Is there anything in particular that I need to keep in mind when I?m trying to setup this sort of setup? The documentation that I?ve read seems to imply (or assume) synchronous, bidirectional replication.
Thanks, and apologies if this is an obvious question; this is my first foray into doing something not utterly trivial with Dovecot.

deriving mean from specific cases
...and 2 for all the permutations of
condition 1 and 2.
2. The mean of all subjects for result1 and 2 split into the permutations of
condition 1 and 2.
can anyone advise on how this can be accomplished in R? Some data
reorganisation probably needs to be done.
Thanks and by the way, this is my first foray into R and I have been a long
time Excel user. Appreciate any guidance!

Asterisk HA Current Thoughts (Centos 5.3 Platform)
...tos. I've seen a number of different pointers to packages for this
some of which are packages that seem quite dated from an update
perspective (Ultra Monkey links I've seen haven't been updated in a
while). What is the current best practice on this for this platform?
My first foray into any of the Linux HA setups but not afraid of the
command line.

Adding a NOP bitcode instruction
Hi,
I'm trying to follow the instructions on how to add a new bitcode
instruction:
http://llvm.org/docs/ExtendingLLVM.html
This is my first foray into the guts of LLVM and I'm not sure I'm doing
things the right way. I came up with a patch that adds a NOP (no
operation) that will work with llvm-as, llvm-dis, and lli. It would be
nice if one of the experts could take a look and give some quick feedback:

terms.formula
I'm in the very initial stage of expanding the formula processing
in my quantile regression function rq() to handle additive
nonparametric components, say qss(x), or qss(x,z). I need some
advice about strategy for formula processing. My initial foray
was to use:
terms(formula,specials="qss")
and then modify the components of the resulting
terms.object. But in changing formula at factors to drop the qss
columns and rows, I ran afoul of methodsPackageMetaName
which claimed that it was "being abused" by this.

glusterfs over rdma ... not.
OK - finished some tests over tcp and ironed out a lot of problems.
rdma is next; should be snap now....
[I must admit that this is my 1st foray into the land of IB, so some
of the following may be obvious to a non-naive admin..]
except that while I can create and start the volume with rdma as
transport:

mapping states with colors
Hi folks,
I'm just learning how to use maps. As an initial foray, I'm mapping the
states that have "duty to retreat" (blue) and "stand your ground" (red)
self-defense standards. Here is my extremely naive script:
dtr <- c('alabama', 'arizona', 'conneticut', 'delaware', 'dist of columbia'
, '...

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 7 install fails -ve memory reported
Hi folks,
I'm presently having my second foray into Wine. I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 on a machine with 3GB memory. I'm having problems installing Dragon NaturallySpeaking 7 and would welcome some guidance.
When I run "wine /media/cdrom1/autorun.exe" the install looks promising for a few moments, then an error message saying:

odesolve dynload example
Hello R Developers,
This is my first foray into using c-code with R, so please forgive my
foolishness.
I had a look at the archives and did not find anything on this, so
hopefully I am not doubling up.
I have tried to use R cmd to create an object file from the odesolve
dynload example.
I am using windows and have just installed rtools, an...

[LLVMdev] Using lli
I'm about to foray into my first serious use of lli.
I'd like to be able to take the bitcode produced at various points by our
compiler and execute it to check for bugs.
The big question for me is around libraries. To execute tests I will ned to
link the JITed code to precompiled libraries. Looking at the lli...

Puppet from EPEL ?
Hi guys.
It's a bit confusing - I'm only about to start a foray into
it - whether _puppet_ from EPEL is the whole-lot-server?
From the look of included _puppet.service_ - this package
is only agent and if not why no server bits?
Looking at what comes with Puppet's own repo - those appear
quite different, packages. do.
How do you install/get your _puppet...

WoW FPS under Wine?
I recall this old post:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/plenderj/archive/2007/07/14/foray-into-feisty-fawn-helped-me-take-back-my-mips.aspx
This was in Ubuntu 7.04 days.
What are current test results like for WoW on Windows XP versus WoW on
Ubuntu/Wine these days?

Problem creating Samba Admin account
...igrate_passwd.pl /tmp/sambaAdmin >
/tmp/sambaAdmin.ldif
but when I get to converting the ldif to ldap via:
/opt/fedora-ds/slapd-<server>/ldif2ldap "cn=Directory manager"
password /tmp/sambaAdmin.ldif
I get the following error:
adding new entry uid=Administrator,ou=People,dc=forayadams,dc=foray,dc=com
ldap_add: Object class violation
ldap_add: additional info: unknown object class "kerberosSecurityObject"
As far as I know I haven't enabled kerberos anywhere. Does anyone know what
I need to do to resolve this?
Thanks,

Microsoft launches first PABX
http://www.crn.com.au/story.aspx?CIID=76033&eid=4&edate=20070320
The company developed Response Point to work alongside traditional phone
systems or voice-over-IP systems.
Continuing its recent foray into the market for digital communications
products, Microsoft on Monday introduced its first packaged digital
phone system for small business.
Anyone know anything about it?

vmware fusion display auto-size problem
...I have uninstalled and re-installed vmware tools to no avail. During
the vmware tools install it returns a statement that it does not have
drivers for x.
Anybody else come across this? Google and vmware sites either do not
have any info, or I am asking the wrong question.
This being my first foray into vmware, is it advisable not to run
updates until needed? What is best practice in this config?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Patch to 0.0.39
...I tried to use wxruby
0.6 but I couldn''t live without some of those new funky features :)
So, instead of writing my own code, I got a bit sidetracked and wrote
http://rubyforge.org/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=9297&group_id=35&atid=220
instead.
Seeing as this is my first foray in to the innards of wxruby2, I eagerly
await comments from the more seasoned wxrubyists.

Send SPF SoftFails to Junk
...y mail client's responsibility and I need to look around my Thunderbird settings? I suppose it's also possible that Postfix needed to do something beyond adding the Received-SPF line in the message header, but I didn't see anything about that in the Policy-SPF config. This is my first foray into SPF so I'm open to any suggestions.
Thanks,
Scott
