Alert icon for yum
...t would be better to use
an applet similar to up2date's for yum so that there is no need to edit
both yum and up2date files and there is consistency between when the
applet signals a need for updating and the actual "yum update" command.
Am I making sense?
I found a site (http://fedoranews.org/tchung/yum-applet/) with the
source for a yum applet. I know I can build this for myself, but I was
wondering what others on this list think and whether such an applet
should be more widely available to the general CentOS audience. Can I
go ahead and build this for my system? TIA for you...

Bridges, ebtables and OpenVPN [non member]
Hi all,
I''m trying to use OpenVPN as a VPN solution on a firewall running
Shorewall. The IPSEC VPN I tried first has shown a little bit unstable
under several conditions, especially with Windows clients.
As OpenVPN is best run in ''bridged'' mode (see
http://fedoranews.org/contributors/florin_andrei/openvpn/), I became
interested in the bridge capabilities of Shorewall 2.x.
My first question goes to Thomas: I don''t know anything about the magic
you have performed to get bridging and iptables working, but I''m
wondering why you aren''t...

Shutdown Problem
Hi
I'm hoping someone can help.
I'm running fc5 with nut 2.0.3. I just recently acquired 2 Gamatronic
SmartCompact ups for my Linux boxes. As you can see from the info below,
everything looks ok. When I unplug the ups from the wall, after a while, the
computer shutdowns very rudely. That it is just turns off. No scrolling down
of processes shutting down It does not seem shutdown

A guide for setting up the NoMachine client (to connect to the freenx

Remote identity management
Hi,
Until now, I've only managed local user management on small network with
no more than five or six machines, e. g. all user data stored locally on
each and every machine (/etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, /etc/group). Now I'd
like to learn remote identity management, that is, all user data stored
centrally on one machine (so I don't have to wonder who has which UID
and GID when I want

are a bunch of udev rules installed (in /lib/udev/rules.d/52-nut-usbups.rules)

them, or how I cause udev to see them there and do its thing.
there's a document at http://fedoranews.org/contributors/kazutoshi_morioka/nut/
but it doesn't show how to do it with a USB device, only serial.
so I decided to move on and see if it could be made to work without
that understanding, using whatever I could figure out using the INSTALL
file that comes with NUT.
And that isn't ge...

need recommendations for apache configurations
I''m running a rails app on FedoraCore4 and so far have been using
lighttpd and fastcgi. I''ve decided to switch to apache because lighttpd
has been far too unstable, unpredictable, and slow. I don''t know if it''s
lighttpd or the combination of lighttpd and fastcgi but it''s just not
working for me. I need something that has been proven to work and

I checked out a couple other things on the web on how to set it up and these
did not help (they were very helpful, just not with my problem about the
desktop not coming up). E.g.,
http://fedoranews.org/contributors/rick_stout/freenx/
I also noted other posts about freenx on this list, but they did not seem to
be relevant
However, I note that at http://wiki.centos.org/FreeNX is says that freenx
only works with centos 4, which I am hoping is simply out of date, as freenx

Safe to use gstreamer repository for RH or Fedora?
I'd like to install "Gstreamer" so that I can get MP3 support in
Rhythmbox. At least, I'm led to believe MP3 support comes with
installing Gstreamer from Rhythmbox's FAQ.
But when I get to the Gstreamer download page:
http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/download/
... it says:
"Do not compile from source yourself unless you are certain you have to
or want to"

Rebuild gstreamer
Hi all,
I have a need to rebuild the gstreamer and gst-plugins in CentOS 7.
So I found the wiki for rebuilding a source package...
I downloaded the vault.centos.org files, installed them with dependencies.
I did the rpmbuild -ba for each of the four packages. All seemed to go well.
No errors reported.
However - the /usr/bin/gst-inspect* listing shows the files as OLD
ls -l /usr/bin/gst-inspect*

Proper partition/LVM growth after RAID migration
Hi
This topic is perhaps not for this list, but it I'm running on a
CentOS 4.4 and it seems that a lot of people here uses 3Ware and RAID
volumes.
I did a RAID migration on a 3Ware 9590SE-12, so that an exported disk
grew from 700GB to 1400GB. The exported disk is managed by LVM. The
problem now is that I don't really know what to do now to let LVM and
my locigal volume to make use of
