libcom32 license and linking
Peter-
Can you please clarify the license of libcom32, from
the samples directory in syslinux? I am attempting to
create .c32 files that are not encumbered by the GPL,
but the conio.c file states that is is covered by the
GPL. So far, I have resisted linking with libcom32.a,
but is it really your intent to license the library
code under GPL, and not something more like the LGPL?
Additionally, the Makefile in the samples directory
also has a GPL he...

I would like know if someone who installed this can test if Centos 5 can read/write NTFS,.
Thanks

More [A tangent on RC5] Cryptography patents (was: openssl lib question.)
...f one
point (specifically WRT RC5 which
was mentioned in the original question)
might be worthwhile...because what
I should have said originally was
that "To the best of my non-legally-
admissible knowledge, however, none
of the algorithms in the current
*OpenSSH* implementation are currently
encumbered by patents that would
restrict their use in any country."
I definitely can't categorically
discuss every algorithm which is
implemented in OpenSSL.
Anyway, I knew that there were issues
with RC5 but was reasonably certain
that they didn't impact OpenSSH.
I took more of a look at some...

EFI requires a FAT filesystem. Ideally FAT32 but that might be encumbered
by Microsoft patents? Maximum size of a FAT16 partition is 2GB.
Use mkfs.vfat You can try the "-F 32" if you're not worried about being
sued by Microsoft.

An alternative explanation might be that open source developers were not
particularly motivated to work on improving AAC encoders, because of
difficulties experienced when trying to distribute patent-encumbered code.
Cheers!

[RFC] Lanai backend
The ISA & encoding is documented in the comments and diagrams of
lib/Target/Lanai/LanaiInstrFormats.td. If that makes sense I'll add a link
to this tablegen in docs/CompilerWriterInfo.rst.
Thanks,
Jacques

Cryptography patents (was: openssl lib question.)
Sunil--
Actually, you do not "see that openssl
has some patent issues." You do see that
OpenSSL implements many algorithms, some
of which have been (at various times)
been patented or encumbered in some
countries.
Without knowing what country you're in,
none of us here can really give useful advice
as to which software/algorithm patents
could potentially apply. To the best
of my non-legally-admissible knowledge,
however, none of the algorithms in
the current OpenSSL implementation

Support for CAF in flac command-line?
Thanks for the interest, Michael.
I don't use Ogg, so I'm a little wary that standard FLAC would be
left out of any Ogg Frog implementation. But I say that mostly out
of ignorance. I have noticed that there seem to be two worlds for
FLAC, inside Ogg and outside. It's important to be aware of the fact
that many hardware devices support the FLAC format directly, without

CAST5 encryption
Hello all,
I was wondering if CAST5 encryption is currently being added the
openssh? It's a steller block cipher. No one's found any weaknesses
in it yet and it's free for non profit use.

missing from Centos compared to the Red Hat Enterprise release and therefore
may potentially hamper my studies. The site briefly mentions that "Non-free
packages, such as those encumbered by a non-redistributable copyright or
trademark, are altered to avoid infringement".
Thank you in advance for any advise offered.

GPL java
...ews everyone has made it out to be. Sun
did a very good thing by moving java under the GPL, and they should be
commended for FINALLY seeing the light after the failure of the DLJ
license BUT:
1. Sun did not open all of java under the GPL. There are still several
chunks of java which remain license encumbered and will require
community workarounds or further moves by Sun to open code. Currently
these include the color management code, font rasteriser code,
graphics rasteriser code, and several more.
2. Sun is not opening up the Java trademark, so any GPL'd distribution
of java will not be called ...

FWIW the patches are at http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/10.5.6/OpenSSH-95.1.5/patches

Would appreciate your help.
Thank you so much.

Mutually assured minefields.
...of prominent statements along the
lines of "all video codecs are covered by patents" and "virtually
all codecs are based on patented technology".
These statements are carefully engineered FUD spread by the license
holders of competing formats in order to discourage the use of
unencumbered alternatives. They are careful to avoid naming WHO
owns these supposed patents or WHAT is actually patented, because
such specific statements would allow the victims of this FUD to
petition a court for a declaratory judgment of non-infringement.
This FUD is particularly effective because there _is...

Theora patent question
Does the reason Theora is relatively safe from patent infringement
lawsuit have more to do with it actually not being encumbered, or is
it because its use is decentralized?
For example, FreeType is not patent-free, nor is Linux, yet they
succeed because on the one hand, they are open source, and those who
maintain them do not guarantee anything regarding patents, it is up to
each individual user to deal with those issues; a...
